  • 21、Beating Burnout and Compassion Fatigue in the New Year

This year has continued to bring many of us closer to the pain, suffering and exhaustion of those experiencing burnout and compassion fatigue (疲倦). There is no doubt that 2021 has been filled with additional challenges. 【1】

The data is clearly showing that our workforce shares feelings of burnout. A recent Gallup report indicated that 67% of us feel burned out either some or most of the time. At an organizational level, Hogan reports that burned out employees are 18% less productive and 2.6 times more likely to be actively seeking a different job.

Fatigue and burnout arise not when we fail to get sufficient rest but when we fail to appreciate the moments of purpose and joy in our lives.

There are a few myths around burnout and compassion fatigue:

Myth 1: Burnout is an individual's problem.

Many people believe that burnout is about an individual who needs to “figure it out”. 【2】 Team structure offers critical support and leaders should create environment where team burnout is addressed.

    Myth 2: 【3】

Surprisingly, the individuals most likely to experience burnout are committed employees and leaders who love their job and are highly engaged. These top performers are the people you are most likely to lose.

Myth 3: People who experience burnout are just less resilient.

Research shows a correlation between higher levels of resilience (复原力) and lower levels of burnout. 【4】 But resilience looks very different now from five years ago, and my guess is that it will continue to shift.

If 2021 has taught us anything, it is that we cannot separate burnout from our emotions, whether they may be fear, anger, shame or guilt. 【5】

A.While fatigue is more sudden and results from carrying the pain and suffering of others, what we experience is similar.

B.Burnout results from lack of responsibility.

C.Burnout hurts individuals' enthusiasm and passion.

D.At this point, burnout and compassion fatigue has expanded into many aspects of our lives.

E.But burnout occurs at different levels and is the result from challenges to individuals, teams and organizations.

F.At one point, people believed resilience was established by “sucking it up”, or “just staying positive”.

G.And the path forward requires us to deepen the relationship with feelings of joy, passion, pride and fulfillment.

  • 22、   Grab an ice cube from the freezer and place it on a table. Watch closely enough and you will see, well, not much at all. The ice cube is absorbing heat, but it is still an ice cube. Before it melts, it will draw heat from the environment to change from solid to liquid. Only then will it begin to slip and slide in a puddle of its own making.

And so to A World Without Ice by Henry Pollack, retired professor of geophysics at the University of Michigan and a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that shared the 2007 Nobel peace prize with AI Gore.

The book gets off to a slow start. You may have to work a little before being rewarded. But given time. Pollack’s account warms up and really takes off. The story he has to tell is fascinating, frightening and important.

Despite the title, this is not a book about the world without ice. Much is given over to the impact of ice in Earth’s long history, as an important force that shaped our planet’s landscape, controlled migrations and influenced cultures. Pollack takes us through Antarctic and Arctic explorations, the natural cycles that bring us ice ages and milder periods without extremes of heat or cold and the rise of climate science which, among other achievements, can recreate a history of the temperature on Earth from kilometers of ice core drilled from the polar caps.

Pollack’s intellectual power and clarity of phrase are invaluable in describing the scientific evidence for global warming, the ways in which it will affect the world, and the all-too-probable consequences. Pollack is not one to brush awkward issues under the carpel. There is serious discussion about uncertainties in climate science, and in particular the computer models used to forecast future warming. For its forensic analysis (取证分析) and strong destruction of climate sceptic (怀疑论者) arguments alone, A World Without Ice is worth keeping on a nearby shelf.

Some readers may hind Pollack’s US-centric approach occasionally grating (刺耳的). He tells of intense irrigation in southwestern Kansas, IPCC reports as big as several New York City phone directories and school-day stories from Omaha. But this is forgivable. The US is uniquely placed to act on climate change but faces a significant barrier in the shape of the outdated. influential, oil-funded anti-climate change lobby (游说议员的团体).

Thoughtful throughout, Pollack occasionally delivers paragraphs that stay with you long after closing the book. On the subject of the book itself, he writes: “Nature’s best thermometer (温度计), perhaps its most sensitive and unambiguous indicator of climate change, is ice, When ice gets sufficiently warm, it melts. Ice asks no questions, presents no arguments, reads no newspapers, listens to no debates. It is not burdened by ideology and carries no political baggage as it crosses the threshold (门槛) from solid to liquid. It just melts.”

A World Without Ice is a call to arms. Debates about which mitigation (减缓) strategies might give us the best chances of reducing our emissions miss the point, Pollack says. If we want to avoid the worst that climate change may bring, we need “every horse in the stable pulling together, and as hard and as fast as possible”.

Pollack’s argument is attractive, persuasive and deeply upsetting, no matter the climate change tiredness that unavoidably sets in as a consequence of endless media coverage of global warming. The author’s final warning comes from Lao Tzu, an ancient Chinese philosopher: “If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.”

Pollack leaves us in no doubt as to where that is.

1A World Without Ice mainly focuses on_______.

A.the adventures to the freezing Poles

B.the impact of ice on human and nature

C.the role of climate science in drilling ice

D.the process of ice cube turning into water

2We can learn that A World Without Ice________.

A.brings us to the core of the issue at the very beginning

B.convinces sceptics of the truth about climate change

C.gives an in-depth analysis of global warming

D.gets funded by anti-climate change lobby

3Why does Henry Pollack think ice is nature’s best thermometer?

    A.Ice is a reminder of peaceful co-existence.

B.Ice is a common topic of the media coverage.

C.Ice is a controversial issue in political debates.

D.Ice is a clear indicator sensitive to climate change.

4The underlined sentence in Paragraph 8 probably means the book_____.

A.urges us to make joint efforts to fight climate change

B.advocates addressing climate change by armed forces

C.recommends debating on strategies to reduce emission

D.calls for separate and tough actions in a timely manner

5What does the underlined word that in the last paragraph refer to?

A.Warning from Lao Tzu. B.Destination of a journey.

C.Effect of global warming. D.Argument on climate change.

6What is the author’s attitude to A World Without Ice?

    A.Ambiguous. B.Cautious. C.Positive. D.Skeptical.

  • 23、   If you were like most kids, your mother must have told you there were three no-no’s when it came to your fingers: Don’t put them in an electrical outlet, don’t stick them up your nose (at least not in public), and don’t use them when you are counting. 1 But experts in education and cognition now believe that using your fingers to do math is not only a perfectly good idea but may even help children become superior students.

It certainly makes sense. When children count on their fingers, they take an abstract concept — mathematics — and translate it into the most basic and visual form 2. Even when we aren’t actually counting on figures, they still can help us on math problems.

3 It activates when we respond to heat, pressure, pain, or the use of a given finger.

Studying brain scans, researchers discovered that when students aged 8 to 13 work on subtraction (减法 ) equations, this region “lights up” on the scans, even if the students aren’t using their fingers. The more complex the problem is, the more activities are detected.

The connection between finger use and math ability has been proved on old-fashioned math tests as well. With their eyes closed, first graders were asked to identify which of their fingers a researcher was touching. 4. When college students were given the same quiz, the highest scores once again performed best on calculation tests.

So what does all this mean? For one thing, parents and teachers shouldn’t discourage children from counting on their fingers. 5. Memorizing the multiplication tables may help, but it is not the best option. “I would like to see interesting and creative representations of ideas.” says Jo Boaler, a professor of math education.

Recently, a series of activities have been designed to strengthen students’ perception of their fingers. Maybe in the near future, there will be only two no-no’s regarding the use of fingers.

A.There is a section of the brain, called the somatosensory finger area.

B.Researchers also stress that students simply learn better using visual tools.

C.The first two laws of fingers are as true as ever.

D.That may sound simplistic, but the researchers offer an interesting explanation.

E.Researchers found those scoring highest on the finger-ID questions scored higher on a math test.

F.Researchers are unimpressed by those students who finish quickly as well.

G.In fact, experts believe the brain is built to “see” any process with our fingers.

  • 24、   The blue planet is going green. Since the 1980s, satellite images have shown that leafy cover across the globe has grown by 2.3 percent per decade. A new study, published on February 11 in Nature Sustainability, helps explain why. One main driver is the “fertilization (施肥) effect”, brought about by humans burning fossil fuels. As CO2 increases in the atmosphere, this increases photosynthesis (光合作用) — as long as water, light, and nutrients are not limited. When plants take up more of the gas, they produce more food and new leaves.

But researchers also found another cause for the change in color: planting more crops and trees. China and India, the two most populous countries on Earth, have contributed about a third of the greening seen since 2000, mainly in the form of forests and farms.

In this most recent paper, scientists at Boston University took a closerlook at this greening trend. They used data from NASA’s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (光谱辐射计), or MODIS, which uses advanced satellite technology to document the Earth’s surface on a near-daily basis. From 2000 to 2017, the researchers looked at the change in greenness in plant-covered regions, including croplands, forests, and grasslands.

The satellite data showed that globally, one-third of plant-covered areas are greening, while only five percent are browning. “Human land use management in many regions is more important than those indirect factors [ of climate change and CO2 fertilization ],” says Chi Chen, lead author of the study. “China and India, two developing countries, contribute the most in the increase in leaf area.” According to the study, the two nations contributed more greening relative to their plant-covered area than other countries.

While only 6.6 percent of the world’s vegetated area is in China, the country is responsible for 25 percent of the increase in global greening. The study found that most of China’s greening occurred in its forests, with croplands also contributing.

1How is the text mainly organized?

A.By listing facts and data. B.By making contrast.

C.By giving examples. D.By displaying time order.

2What does Chi Chen think is the direct factor of the global greening?

A.H umans burning fossilfuels. B.Humans planting.

    C.The CO2 fertilization. D.The climate change.

3According to the study, what contributes most to the increase of global greening?

    A.China’s forests and grasslands.

    B.India’s forests and farmlands.

C.China’s and India’s grasslands and croplands.

D.China’s and India’s forests and croplands.

4What can be the best title for the text?

    A.A New Study on Earth

B.The Change in Greeeness on Earth

C.Why Our Blue Planet Is Getting Greener?

D.Who Is Responsible for the Increase in Global Greening?

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Directions: Read the following three passages. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Winter sports can help you burn calories, increase your cardiovascular fitness, and strengthen muscles. Being outdoors and getting exercise are great for your mental health. Exercise boosts mood, and sunlight seems to help beat back the winter blues. So slap on some sunblock and go.

Winter is a great time to experiment with new sports. If you like to walk, keep walking-on snowshoes. If you want to try an endurance sport, go for cross-country skiing. And snowboarding is just plain fun. Runners can also train during the winter, although beware of wet or slippery roads. Or slip on a pair of snowshoes. One of the easiest sports around, snowshoeing can be excellent cold-weather cross-training for runners and cyclists - or anyone wanting to take a wintry walk in the woods.

Whatever sport you choose, don't rely on a friend for instruction. You wouldn't let an amateur perform brain surgery on you; why let one teach you to ski or skate? That's what instructors are for- to help newcomers start out right. Instructors can give you advice about equipment, techniques, safety, and dealing with injuries if they do happen you.

It's tempting for an eager athlete to advance too quickly through learning the ropes. Resist the temptation. If you want to progress, invest your time in learning the basics thoroughly. Everything else you do as a skier, boarder, or skater will be built on these first skills.

Play safely by figuring out what, special equipment and safety gear you'll need. Planning an afternoon of snowshoeing or cross-country skiing? Pack water, snacks, fruit, and extra socks. If you're going out for a long time, keep your water bottle insulated from the cold so it doesn't freeze.

Don't head out onto the slopes or into remote country areas alone. Always go with a buddy and tell a friend what time you plan on returning. If you get in trouble and don't show up when you are supposed to, your friend has your back.
