21、Scientists have made a “breakthrough” in handling nuclear fusion (聚变). The US Department of Energy officially announced the milestone in fusion energy research.
For the first time, researchers created a nuclear fusion reaction that produced more energy than they put into the process. The experiment, conducted at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, generated 3.15 megajoules of energy, more than the 2.05 megajoules put into creating it.
Nuclear fusion works by forcing together two atoms-most often hydrogen-to make a heavier one-like helium (氦). This explosive process releases massive amounts of energy, the Department of Energy explains. Fusion is the opposite of fission (裂变), the reaction that powers nuclear reactors used commercially today.
Fusion occurs naturally in the heart of the Sun and the stars, providing these cosmic (宇宙的) objects with fuel. Since the 1950s, scientists have been trying to reproduce it on Earth in order to make use of the so-called clean, cheap, and almost limitless electricity. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, fusion generates four times more energy per kilogram than the fission used to power nuclear plants, and nearly 4 million times more energy than burning oil or coal. What’s more, unlike fossil fuels, fusion doesn’t release carbon dioxide the greenhouse gas that’s the main driver of climate change-into the atmosphere. And unlike nuclear fission, fusion doesn’t create long-lived radioactive waste, according to the Department of Energy. But so far, nuclear fusion hasn’t solved our energy problems on a grand scale.
The recent announcement is a huge step forward in nuclear fusion energy, but applying the technology at commercial scale is likely still years away. Chanda Prescod Weinstein, a theoretical physicist, pointed out that the process the Department of Energy uses requires tritium (氚), a rare and radioactive isotope (同位素)of hydrogen. “It may yet convey important information that is ultimately transformative. We don’t know yet,” Prescod Weinstein tweeted. Investors, including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, have poured billions into clean energy field trying to make fusion commercially workable, and the recent announcement is likely to continue that trend.

23、Laws that would have ensured pupils from five to sixteen received a full financial education got lost in the “wash up". An application is calling on the next government to bring it back.
At school the children are taught to add up and subtract(减法) but, extraordinarily, are not routinely shown how to open a bank account-let alone how to manage their finances in an increasingly complex and demanding world.
Today the parenting website Mumsnet and the consumer campaigner Martin Lewis have joined forces to launch an online application to make financial education a compulsory element of the school curriculum in England. Children from five to sixteen should be taught about everything from pocket money to pensions, they say. And that was exactly the plan preserved in the children, schools and families bill that was shelved by the government in the so-called ¨wash-up" earlier this month-the rush to legislation before parliament was dismissed. Consumer and parent groups believe financial education has always been one of the most frustrating omissions of the curriculum.
As the Personal Finance Education Group (Pfeg) points out, the good habits of young children do not last long. Over 75% of seven to ll-year-olds are savers but by the time they get t0 17, over half of them are in debt to family and friends. By this age, 26% see a credit or overdraft(透支)as a way of extending their spending power. Pfeg predicts that these young people will “find it much harder to avoid the serious unexpected dangers that have been fallen many of their parents' generation unless they receive good quality financial education while at school".
The UK has been in the worst financial recession(衰退)for generations. It does seem odd that-unless parents step in-young people are left in the dark until they are cruelly introduced to the world of debt when they turn up at university. In a recent poll of over 8,000 people, 97% supported financial education in schools, while 3% said it was a job for parents.
【1】The passage is mainly about
A. how to manage school lessons
B. how to deal with the financial crisis

B. promote the connection of schools and families
C. ask the government to dismiss the parliament
D. appeal for the curriculum of financial education
24、The Surprising Habits that Are Stopping You from Losing Weight
You’ve cut out snacks and started exercising, but why can’t you shift those stubborn pounds? Read on to discover the surprising reasons you struggle to stay slim and simple, science-backed solutions.
You’re eating too late.
Do you regularly eat dinner after 8:00 pm or snack through the evening? A study found that late-night eating made people hungrier the following day. 【1】Avoid eating between 8:00 pm and 8:00 am.
You’re not at the gym frequently enough.
Working out actively but not seeing results? Consider how active you are outside the gym.【2】 There are 168 hours in a week, so if you do one-hour workouts three times a week in the gym, you’re only exercising for 2% of the week. Instead, be active throughout your day has accumulative effect on fat loss.
You’re eating too fast.
The faster you eat, the more rapidly sugar enters your bloodstream. People who eat faster tend to have a higher weight and energy intake than slow-eaters. I’m always telling my children not to wolf food, but listen to their hunger signals. 【3】.
You drop off with the TV on.
【4】 Sleeping with the TV on isn’t restful. Stage 1 sleep is very light so it can be easily disturbed by TV sound. Long-term lack of sleep impacts your appetite, increases food intake and decreases energy consumption. Therefore, in the hour before bed, avoid screens and all bright light.
【5】

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On a mid-September afternoon, Sista and Rafi were racing each other on the mountainside. The .girls laughed wildly and stopped for a rest in the shade of a tree.
“Now, I’m hungry,” Sista said. “Yeah. I could really go for a jobo. I love the sweet-and-sour taste!” Rafi said, licking her lips. “I know where there’s a great jobo tree,” Sista said. “It belongs to that lady who lives in the little house by the hill. I heard she’s severe, but sometimes she gives fruit in return for an errand (差事).” They decided to give it a shot.
Raf’s heart pounded as Sista knocked on the door. An elderly woman answered. “Yes?” the lady asked, squinting (眯着眼看) at the girls. Rafi gasped, unable to speak. “We heard ...” said Sista, her voice shaky, “that you give jobos in payment for running an errand.” The lady raised one eyebrow. “Ah, yes. Payment.” She clicked her tongue. “Nothing is free, eh?”
The lady led the girls into kitchen, where the smell of warm bread filled the air. She grabbed two baskets, one large and one small, “Go fill these with jobos. Come right back.”
The girls raced up the hill to the tree and picked the ripest jobos. The moment they returned to the house, the lady handed them a bag filled with warm bread. “Take this bag and the large basket of jobos to the Gomez family. Do you know them?” The girls nodded. “Good. And ask them for the payment. Mrs. Gomez will place it in a large envelope,” the lady added, warning that if they returned without the envelope of payment, they wouldn’t get the jobos.
Wrestling with the heavy bag and basket along the way, the girls finally arrived at the Gomez home, sweating. Mrs. Gomez answered the door. Walking inside, Rafi saw colorful drawings lying everywhere. The three little Gomez kids were still busy with more pictures, pure smiles on their cute faces. “This is from the lady with the jobo tree,” Sista held up the food. Mrs. Gomez cried, “Thank you. My husband is still sick in bed. Times are hard.”
