21、 Holidays can be enjoyable and relaxing. But sometimes a holiday can change your life completely, which is what happened two years ago to Victoria Smith and Sally Gook.
Victoria Smith, six years ago, was working as a manager at Next, a British chain store. Then she went on holiday to Borneo. “It was a working holiday,” said Victoria, “where you could study the orang-utan in the wild — I have always been interested in apes, so I thought it would be fun. ” The holiday was wonderful, and when Victoria came home she found it very difficult to return to her old life. Although everybody told her she was mad, she decided to go back to university and study biology. Four years later she became a chimpanzee keeper.
For the last two years Victoria has been working at Monkey World, a centre in southwest England that looks after apes which used to be ill-treated. She works long hours, and the pay isn’t very good, but she loves it. “I’m really happy now. Since I started working here I feel that I’ve been doing something important, not just wasting my life.”
Sally Gook wakes up every morning to a deep blue sky and blazing sun. For the last two years she has been living on the tiny Greek island of Lipsi, which is only 16 square kilometers in size and has a population of just 650.
But until a few years ago she lived in London. “I was working for American Express and I had a good social life and earned a lot of money. But I had to get up very early every morning, often in horrible weather, and got a train and the tube to work.”
Then one day she and a friend decided they needed a relaxing holiday, and they came to Lipsi. “I loved it — the people, the mountains, the sun, and the delicious food. Suddenly I knew there was a different life waiting for me here.” A few months later she applied for a job at the travel company which had organized her holiday. 22、When one door closes to Li, another one opens. Born with severe hearing loss, Li has found her way to communicate with the world—through painting. Moreover, painting led Li to meet her husband Hu at the Changsha Vocational and Technical School. Losing his hearing due to medication when he was 1 year old, Hu is also an art-lover.
Before learning to paint in primary school, Li always felt lonely in a silent world. She knew she was different from her peers because she could not hear. But a painting class opened for her a door to creativity and away of expression.
Graduating from college in 2005, Li got a job as a typist at a public institute in Zhuzhou, Hunan. It was a decent job in the eyes of her father, but Li was not happy because she could not communicate with other colleagues and the lonely feeling from childhood came back.
In 2016, Li quit the job and joined her husband’s company, which specializes in 3D wall and ground paintings, to be a wall painter. All the five painters there are hearing-impaired. “I know how difficult it is for hearing impaired people to find a job. So I want to help those who are passionate about painting to pursue their dreams,” said Hu, adding that the company is more like a family.
As all the people are hearing-impaired, communication with clients is the most common challenge that the team faces. Li said, “We communicate through typed words, which is slow and has caused us to lose some clients.” Apart from that, Li is confident about the team’s painting and design skills.

23、 Selah Thompson shares her love of reading and even creates her own stories.
Books have the power to transport you to another place and make you feel like you are part of the story. A love of reading should be developed at a young age so children can benefit a lot. That’s a gift 8-year-old Selah Thompson from Atlanta, Georgia, received from her parents and wants to pass on to other children.
When Selah was five, she came home from her first day at kindergarten and told her parents that a lot of her new friends at school didn’t know their ABCs, which really bothered Selah and she wanted to do something about it.
She then asked her parents to give away 20 hundred thousand books. Her parents began to do research and found that there is a huge amount of illiteracy (文盲) in America and that two-thirds of students who cannot read skillfully by the end of the fourth grade will end up in prison or on welfare.
After understanding the need for books and establishing a love for reading, Selah’s parents were on board. In 2018, they created the nonprofit Empowered Readers Literacy Project. This organization promotes families to create solid reading habits so children see books as something positive.
More than 2,400 kids and their parents participated in the reading activities in Atlanta in the first year. They also run an adventure time readers club and the 500 books project to get books into children’s hands.
Over the past two years, the literacy project has donated 8,000 books, including Selah’s own series. Although her goal of “20 hundred thousand books” is still quite far, Selah is on the right track. 24、 The world’s glaciers are melting. Each year, they become smaller in size as ice breaks off and floats away. These giant pieces of ice also hold very old viruses and bacteria and as the ice melts, some of them may be waking up.
In 2015, scientists took ice from a 15,000-year-old glacier in Tibet, hoping to learn more about the history of life in the area. What was the result? The scientists found 28 new viruses frozen in the ice. Experts think they can learn a lot from these ancient viruses. They hope to find out how viruses and bacteria survive and this may help future people as new viruses turn up in the Earth’s changing climate. However, others worry whether these viruses and bacteria could cause sickness in humans. As yet, the viruses found in the Tibetan glacier seem to only infect amoebas, a very small living animal, they may not be a threat to people. But melting ice elsewhere in the world might be a different story.
In 2016, parts of Siberia saw a heat wave. The higher temperatures caused melting of soil that normally stays frozen year-round. As the ground warmed, bacteria escaped, which caused a sudden start of a serious disease in the area. In 2017, a teacher in Alaska came home from a trip with a skin infection. He visited his doctor. That’s when he learned that the infection was caused by bacteria from melted sea animal bodies. The bacteria had been frozen with the animals for many years before infecting him.
How worried should people be about the viruses and bacteria escaping from melting ice? Most experts aren’t ringing the alarm bells, yet. Instead, scientists worry that many viruses and bacteria will be lost as the ice melts, and so do the learning chances. Is there any hope of saving the world’s glaciers? Most experts say no — the planet has already warmed too much.
【1】What do we know about the viruses and bacteria in glaciers?
A.They will not be harmful to humans.
B.They only threaten small living animals.

D.Helping the people infected with viruses and bacteria.
