二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   During my first year in college I was forced to do something I didn't want to do: Plan a budget. With great resentment (愤慨) for 6 months I used pens to mark my expenses into 10 different categories. I then came up with a monthly average for each category. It was not until a decade later that I realized the simple exercise of learning to manage money is the best investment.

For most of you, college may be the first time you'll be managing money on your own, and it's easy to blow past your college budget. But overspending could leave you broke or worse, buried in debt. According to Edvisors, 64% of college students have run out of money before the end of the semester. And the consequence is that it will take them the following several years to pay back that big amount.

Before sharing with you my approaches 10 dealing with the situation, I'd like to make you aware of something first. Based on researches, over-spenders mainly fall into one of the following categories.

    a. Image spenders use money in highly visible ways, caring much about their appearance. Their motto is "If I look beautiful, I am beautiful."

    b. Compulsive (难控制的) shoppers use shopping as a distraction (分心) from unwanted negative feelings. Whenever down, they purchase to "drown" the bad feeling.

    c. Bargain-hunting spenders care more about "getting the deal". Their satisfaction comes from the bargaining process or grabbing the bargains.

1What did the writer do in college?

A.She never made both ends meet. B.She recorded the money she spent.

C.She enjoyed making investment. D.She had to buy things she disliked.

2What is the second paragraph mainly about?

A.A plan of making a budget. B.The danger of overspending.

C.A style of paying off debts. D.The value of attending college.

3What do compulsive shoppers and bargain-hunting spenders have in common?

A.Paying great attention to their appearance. B.Seeing the harm of overspending.

C.Satisfying themselves by spending on food. D.Buying too many unwanted items.

4What may probably be mentioned next by the writer?

A.Ways to manage money. B.Examples of success.

C.Consequences of overspending. D.Secrets of happy life .

  • 22、Whenever she was having a tough day, Selena Berry would look at the sky and imagine herself, flying high in the clouds above her troubled neighbourhood and challenging school life. "Flying makes you feel big, "Betty said. "You’re on top of everything. You look down and all you see is the view, the beauty. "

This summer, Berry and seven other African-American students in the Chicago area participated in a program to learn how to fly. The program is new and challenging for participants. In the end, successful students will graduate with a private pilot’s license.

The unique program is called Tuskegee Next. "It is a special effort to increase the number of African-Americans who can work as pilots. "said Stephen L. Davis, who owns a big company Wheaton , lllinois and founded the organization. The main mission of the group is to help students follow in the footsteps of the country’s first black military pilot Tuskegee. It costs about $25, 000 to take the lessons and pay for the flying time. But it is free for these students. Davis donates his own money and raises funds to cover the costs.

For much of his early life, Davis wanted to become a pilot. But growing up, he could not afford the expensive schooling. By the time he could afford lessons, he had a wife and children and did not want to take the risk. For the students, the benefits of learning to tly are greater than being pilots. "When you don’t see black pilots, you don’t think you can do it, he said. "Even if these kids don’t become pilots, learning to fly will give them confidence to do other great things. "

Tuskegee Next targets African-American teenagers from rough communities who might never have such a chance. The experience will change their lives and let them see a happy future. Some of the students in the program will receive a small stipend, which makes up for the summer jobs they would have otherwise.

All eight of the students have passed the written exam. Now they are spending hours piloting a Cessna airplane with an instructor. Some are already flying the planes alone. On a recent sunny afternoon, 20-year-old Quiana White spent about an hour alone in a Cessna airplane practicing turns. This was her first solo flight and her classmates crowded around her after she landed. "You’re not the same person once you go up on your own, "she said. "No matter what happens, I know I’m a pilot. "

  • 23、All over the world, barbershops not only fuel their local economies, but also bring people together. So when the COVID-19 broke out three years ago and the community fell on hard times, Chris Bossio knew just what to do. Chris opened a barbershop called Headlines, where people could come together for a hair cut, having some conversations meanwhile.

Later, Chris volunteered his free time to teach other barbers new techniques.

Impressed by his down-to-earth, easy-to-understand lessons, one of his business partners convinced him to upload them on Tiktok (抖音).

That was when things really took off. The videos earned him a large number of subscribers and as Chris kept creating more, he saw his subscribers turn into clients. The freshmen in the line flooded in to exchange professional opinions and sharpen the skills, while residents from the community came for a moment of peace, hence building a deeper bond.

Business was booming but Chris didn’t stop here.

When he started Headlines, his initial goal was just to open five barbershops within five years. But as time went by, he was determined to share his success, focusing most of his time on empowering barbers. He held workshops where he trained barbers on not only the business of barbering, but also how to establish their brands. Once, his workshop attracted over 300 attendees. Many of his students have become successful barbers themselves, including about 40 who have opened their own shops in the area. “These shops serve as places where community cultures really come together and come to life, ” he said. It was a dream come true for Chris.

He also saw opportunities popping up as his channel grew. He started making a shaving gel (凝胶). It was another huge hit. He immediately launched a production line, creating a certain number of jobs in the community. Though the economy was in decline, he could sell10, 000 products per month in 15 countries. It’s also been a lifeline during the COVID-19 epidemic (疾病流行) , when hundreds of barbershops were forced to shut down. Without it, Chris’ business, as well as his employees, couldn’t have survived.

【1】What was Chris Bossio’s original purpose of opening Headlines?

A.To earn money for the poor in the community.

B.To ease people’s tension during the epidemic.

C.To have conversations with other people.

D.To teach other barbers new techniques.

【2】What does the underlined word “That” in paragraph 4 refer to?

    A.Sharing new techniques.

    B.Opening a barbershop.

    C.Posting videos online.

    D.Giving new barbers lessons.

【3】What was an outcome of Chris’ workshops?

A.People established a closer bond there.

B.Chris’ students all became successful barbers.

C.Chris’ contribution was recognized across the world.

D.Many barbers benefited a great deal from them.

【4】Which of the following best describes Chris Bossio?

    A.Helpful and creative.

    B.Ambitious and patient.

    C.Generous and thoughtful.

    D.Positive and energetic.

  • 24、   As the days get shorter and the chilly weather rolls in , we all want to curl up in a blanket and hibernate until spring rolls around. But making time to get outside in the sun, even when it’s cold out, could have bigger mood benefits than you might realize.

While the link between sunshine and mental health is nothing new, new research from Brigham Young University(BYU) has shown that the association may be even stronger than previously realized. It finds that sunlight exposure is by far the greatest weather-related factor determining mental health outcomes. In other words: more sunshine, more happiness.

For the study, a psychologist, a physicist and a statistician from BYU teamed up to compare daily environmental data from the university’s Physics and Astronomy Weather Station with emotional health data archived by day for 16,452 adult therapy patients who were being treated at the BYU Counseling and Psychological Services Center.

Exposure to sunlight is a significant factor in seasonal affective disorder. Research has shown that the brain produces more of the feel-good neurotransmitter serotonin on sunny days than it does on darker days. What’s more, lack of sunlight is linked with lower vitamin D levels, which in turn has been correlated with depression and low energy.

If you’re getting enough sun, your emotions should remain relatively stable, the researchers found. But as the amount of sunlight in the day is reduced, levels of emotional pain can soar. Other weather variables including temperature, pollution and rain were not found to have an impact on mental health.

“We were surprised that many of the weather and pollution variables we included in the study were not significantly correlated with clients’ scores on the distress measure once we had accounted for suntime,” Dr. Mark Beecher, a professor of psychology at the university and the study’s lead author, told The Huffington Post. “People tend to associate rainy days, pollution, and other meteorological phenomena with sadness or depression, but we did not find that.”

1What does the author suggest we do in Paragraph 1?

    A. Realized the benefits of sunshine. B. Avoid hibernating in springtime.

    C. Curl up in a blanket in cold weather. D. Enjoy sunshine even in cold weather.

    2The underlined word “soar”in Paragraph 5 most probably means “   ”?

    A. Rise sharply. B. Vary unstably.

    C. Drop slightly. D. Change greatly.

3What does the passage say about the research done by BYU?

    A. It is done on normal adults of various ages.

    B. It is carried out by Dr Mark Beecher alone.

    C. It concludes the sunshine means happiness.

    D. It finds that temperature affects mental health.

4What can be inferred from the passage?

    A. Lower vitamin D levels are helpful in keeping us energetic.

    B. The research findings are inconsistent with the popular belief.

    C. The more sunshine we get, the less excited we are likely to feel.

    D. The link between sunshine and mental health was unknown before.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My family lived in a tiny apartment in Hoboken, New Jersey. Every December my mom spread the word to anyone alone on Christmas Eve that she would be having an open house. My mom believed that no one should be alone during the holidays. If she could, she probably would have put an advertisement in the paper inviting the world.

As it was, our tiny apartment was stuffed, every room but my bedroom filled with partying adults on Christmas Eve. Sleep was impossible, but I tried to fall asleep anyway because Santa would not leave gifts for children who were awake. As I lay in bed, I wondered how Santa would even know I was asleep amid all the laughter and how he could sneak in and leave gifts with all those people around.

The Christmas Eve Open-House tradition continued. When I was 8 years old, we moved to the suburb, where we got to live in a lovely, one-bedroom apartment. That first Christmas there, my mom invited anyone she met who she learned would be alone on Christmas Eve一neighbors, co-workers, shop girls, the postman...the list went on.

The next year, a new neighbor moved in next door. His name was George, and he was an older gentleman. He always nodded a greeting when he saw us. It was around Thanksgiving when we saw him park in his space near ours. We were bringing in groceries, and my mom asked him if he had plans for the.holiday. When he said no, and he would spend it alone, my mom mentioned her open house on Christmas Eve.

“Please join us,” I said. He was already shaking his head no.

“But mom’s apple pie is really inviting.”

“I won’t be good company, I’m afraid,” he said. “I lost my wife a few months ago.” His eyes were fill with tears and he turned away. “Thank you anyway!” he called. He went into his apartment and quickly closed the door.
