二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Britain’s oldest man made his first visit to London yesterday at the age of 101. Mr. John Evans had never found the time or money to make the trip from his home in Forest Fach, near Swansea. But, when British Rail offered him an all-expense-paid birthday treat to the capital he just could not refuse.

He arrived at Paddington Station and smartly turned out in his best suit, favorite Panama hat and a red rose in his buttonhole. “It’s very exciting. There’s no doubt about it,” he said.

Until yesterday he had never been far from home, except for one trip to Aberdeen. “But I’ve been on the seas to that faraway land called Ilfracombe 21 miles from home,” he joked.

Mr. Evans, who spent 60 years working as a miner in South Wales, almost made the journey to London once before, at the turn of the century. “There was a trip to the White City but it was ten shillings return from Swansea too much I thought. All my money went to the family then,” he said.

During the next two days Mr. Evans will be taken on a short tour of London to see the sights. Top of his list is a visit to the House of Parliament organized by his MP, Mr. Gareth Wardell.

The only arrangement he does not care for is the wheelchair provided for him if he gets tired. “I don’t like the chair people will think I am aging,” he said. His secret for a long and healthy life has been well publicized no wine, no tobacco and no anger.

Before setting off from Swansea with his 76 year old son, Amwell, he said jokingly, “I’m glad to see they’ve given me a return ticket.”

【1】The very reason that Mr. Evans didn’t go to see the world is that _______.

    A. he had already been on the seas to Ilfracombe

    B. he was too busy to go too far away from home

    C. he believed “East or west, home is the best”

    D. he couldn’t afford both the time and the money

【2Mr. Evans didn’t like the wheelchair simply because  _______.

    A. he was not used to traveling in it

    B. the wheelchair was of poor quality and not easy to operate

    C. he thought he was still young enough to manage the trip

    D. he actually preferred walking to sitting in it at home

【3】Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

    A. Mr. Evans had to pay for the return ticket.

    B. The trip to London excited Mr. Evans very much.

    C. Mr. Evans had to work hard to raise his family when young.

    D. Humor was one of Mr. Evans’ characters.

【4】The probable explanation to Mr. Evans’ long life lies in _______.

    A. his sticking to his hometown

    B. his hard working for the family

    C. his good living habits

    D. his living conditions near the Swansea

  • 22、   Whether you’re traveling over your children’s spring break, summer vacation or winter holidays, you’ll find Miami is such a hot spot for families year-round. There are various activities for vacationing kids in Miami, and they can spend one day learning about some of Miami’s rich cultural heritage (遗产),as well as a bit of science and history.

Start your day at Bayside Marketplace. There are plenty of shops and souvenir stands here for all members of the family. Kids will particularly enjoy Art By God, a shop devoted to natural stone, especially fossils(化石).

From Bayside Marketplace walk two blocks north to visit what is perhaps Miami’s most famous historical landmark, Freedom Tower (located at 600 Biscayne Boulevard). It is a great place to expose your kids to the Cuban heritage that is so much a part of life in Miami.

Then you will visit Miami’s Little Havana, and since it’s probably getting close to lunch time, drive yourself to Versailles Restaurant(3555 Southwest 8th Street) in the heart of Little Havana. Then take some time to simply walk the streets and take in the music, the art and the personality of the people and their neighborhood before returning to your car.

On your way back to the hotel, visit the Miami Science Museum, where there are complete science and natural history museums. Or you may visit the Miami Seaquarium (水族馆).Though there are many such theme parks more modern and in better shape than this 1955 pioneer, it’s still worth a visit for their dolphin, sea lion and killer whale shows. • 23、   When Lina was awoken by the sound of thunder, she was alone on the island. The air was cool and bullfrogs croaked. It was that brief moment when the summer sun had set but the stars hadn't yet appeared. Lina rubbed her eyes and looked around. 'Hello? ' she called. 'Celia? Marie? ' There was no response.

The moon was rising now, shedding light on the island. They had always called it 'Forgotten Island' because no one but they seemed to remember its existence. It wasn't on any of the maps they could find, and even the forest rangers didn't know about it. Lina loved that the island, hidden in a heavily-wooded side stream of the river, was a secret between the three friends-her, Celia, and Marie. But now Lina was here alone, and it was night. Worse still, it was her own fault.

'Come on, Lina, let Marie row the boat. ' Celia had said. Marie was two years older than Lina, but she was a hopeless rower. That's why Lina refused and rowed the boat to the island. The argument that followed the refusal took the usual form. Celia took Marie's side, as she always did. Lina exploded and yelled at them to just leave. So they got back in the boat and left.

A bolt of lightning crossed the darkened sky, accompanied by a deafening thunder clap. The storm was here. As the first cold raindrop slid down her neck, Lina's mind returned to her current problem. She was stuck here by herself. She just hoped she didn't become as forgotten as the island. The thought of it sent a chill down her back.

Suddenly, Lina spotted something in the water. It was a boat, and inside it were Marie, Celia, and Marie's dad, who was steering through the fast flowing waters. As the boat approached, they saw Lina waving and the worried expressions on their faces turned to relief.

In her excitement Lina jumped into the river. Only once she was in the icy water did she remember how fast the water was moving. Luckily a strong arm reached into the water and pulled her out. She smiled weakly at Marie's dad and, without a word, hugged Celia and Marie. They didn't seem to mind becoming wet.

1What is special about the island?

A.It is very near the ocean.

B.It is a popular place for boating.

C.It is surrounded by thick forest.

D.It has never been reached by others.

    2Why did Lina get angry

A.Lina was left alone on the island.

B.Marie would not help row the boat.

C.Marie didn't know how to row the boat.

D.Celia supported Marie in the disagreement.

3What caused Lina to feel scared?

A.Her shame about the unnecessary argument.

B.The first raindrop of the approaching storm.

C.The idea that no one would come to save her.

D.The drop in temperature as the sun went down.

4What can we infer about the three girls?

A.All of them could swim well.

    B.They had an adventurous spirit.

C.They lived far away from the island.

D.They quarreled with one another badly.

  • 24、Mama and I spend mornings cleaning up the dirt that blows into our house. Mama says all the dust is due to the drought. The dirt sifts into everything. It covers our clothes. We have to wash the dishes before each meal. We rarely drive the truck because Papa fears the dust from the road will ruin the motor.

When my sister, Faye, and I walk to school, we wear kerchiefs over our mouths so we don’t breathe in the dirt. On days when the air is so bad that they close the school, we stay home and help Mama put wet sheets over the windows. But the dirt always finds a way in.

Last Sunday, there was no dirt in the air, only bright spring sunshine and a clear blue sky. After lunch, Papa headed out to the field to check on the cattle while I played with Faye in the yard. The temperature suddenly dropped. I looked to the west and saw a huge black cloud of dust.

All the birds flew away. “I must warn Papa,” I thought to myself. To avoid her panicking, I gently told Faye to go back inside where she would be safe, and then headed off to the field.

The storm hit so fast, and in an instant the day turned into night. By the time I entered the cow field the fine sand was whipping across my face. I screamed for Papa, hoping my voice would lead him back.

The dirt and sand stung my skin like a thousand bees. Although I was terrified, I refused to turn back. My dad was stranded and needed my help. Covering my face with one hand, I groped my way toward the truck and opened the door. First I tried turning the truck’s lights on and off, hoping that Papa would see them flashing, but the sandstorm let no light escape. Then I pushed the horn again and again, so Papa would hear it. I pushed until I had no more strength in my arms.

Suddenly, Papa’s face appeared at the window. My heart leaped with surprise and relief. He opened the door and climbed onto the seat next to me. He then pulled me into his arms and said, “Oh, Iris, you saved me!”

Finally, the wind subsided and the dust began to settle. Dirt was piled up to the window on one side of the truck and halfway up the door on the other. Papa kicked against the door, opening it far enough to let us out.

Sand and soil drifts were everywhere, but we were safe.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I sometimes allowed them to walk to and from school alone if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a little dog followed them home after school. It had short legs and long lovely ears. It was the cutest dog I had ever seen and the girls begged me to keep it.

The dog was about twelve weeks old. It had no collar(项圈) or identifying marks of any sort. I didn’t know what to do. I thought about posting an advertisement but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up. Besides, its owners should have watched it more closely.

By the end of the week the dog was part of our family. It was very intelligent and good with the girls. The following week something told me to check the lost—and—found section in the local paper. One particular advertisement jumped out at me and my heart beat with fear for what I read. Someone was begging for the return of a lost dog in the neighborhood of our grade school. They sounded extremely eager. My hand shook, couldn’t bring myself to pick up the paper.

Instead, I pretended I hadn’t seen the advertisement. I quickly put paper away in the drawer and continued with my dusting. I never said a word about it to the kids or my husband.

By now we had named the dog. It looked like a Molly, so that was what we called it. It followed the girls everywhere they went. When they went outside, it was one step behind them. When they did the housework, it was there to lend a hand.

There was only one problem with this seemingly perfect picture: my conscience(良心)was bothering me. I knew in my heart I had to call that number in the paper and see if our Molly was the dog they were desperately seeking. It was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done.
