二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、When 12-year-old Taylor Smith wrote a special letter to herself last spring, to be read in 10 years’ time, she didn’t know it would be opened before even a year had passed— and that it wouldn’t be her eyes reading the words.

“She had told me that she had written a letter to herself, and that she was excited that she was going to open it when she was older,”said Taylor’s  mother, Mary Ellen Smith.

Instead, it was opened by Taylor’s parents after she died last spring. They posted the letter to Facebook, hoping it would inspire others.

It has. “We’ve gotten letters from lots of parents who have said it has encouraged them to love their kids and love each other,” said Mary Ellen Smith.

In the letter, Taylor congratulated herself on graduating from high school and asked, “Are you in college?”

She also wanted to know if she had been on a plane yet and if the show “Doctor Who” was still on the air.

Taylor also had some words for her future kids. After considering the idea of selling her iPad and getting an iPad mini instead, she told her future self to mention to her kids that “We’re older than the tablet.” She included a drawing of an iPad for them to see.

Taylor died suddenly of pneumonia (肺炎), leaving behind both her parents and an older brother.

“I just want people to know just what an awesome, awesome person she was,” her father, Tim Smith said.

Her mother said, “I can’t bring her back, but I’m so grateful people have been inspired by her story.”

Taylor’s father read the closing words of her letter, which said, “It’s been years since I wrote this. Stuff has happened, good and bad. That’s just how life works, and you have to go with it.”

【1Taylor Smith decided to open her letter when she was ________.

    A. 18 years old B. 20 years old

    C. 22 years old  D. 24 years old

    B. To encourage parents and kids to love each other.

    C. To make themselves well-known and make money.

    D. To prove Taylor Smith was good at writing.

【3We can learn from the passage that Taylor Smith ________.

    A. was a college student

    B. had never got an iPad

    C. had never taken a plane

    D. wanted to join “Doctor Who”.

【4What is the message conveyed at the end of Taylor Smith’s letter?

    A. We should develop the habit of keeping a diary.

    B. We should accept everything that happens in life.

    C. We should stop bad things from happening.

    D. We should show our love for our parents in time.

  • 22、   There are few things in life that are more irritating(令人愤怒的):You are mid-conversation with a friend. Suddenly he bursts out laughing, making you think you've made a brilliant joke. But then he says:"Sorry,I wasn't laughing at you,I just saw something really funny on micro blog. "He even begins replying to a text message or checking his e-mails.

The Guardian described the scene that a friend's face buried in a screen"a distinct 21 st-century problem". The phenomenon even coins a new word"phubbing",referring to the act of snubbing(冷落) others in a social setting by looking at your phone instead of paying attention. According to research by advertising agency McCann in the UK,37 percent of people feel it is worse not to answer a message than it is to"phub"your friends.

Phil Reed,a professor of psychology at Swansea University who has studied Internet addiction disorder, said many phubbers show symptoms of addiction to their mobile phone.

Like pointing or picking your nose, phubbing is widely considered rude, which can be seen from the popularity of"Stop Phubbing"campaign, which started in Australia by 23-year-old Alex Haigh who wants to shame people who snub friends and family they are with in favor of checking their mobile phone.

The campaign's website claims that"97 percent of people claim their food tasted worse while being a victim of phubbing"and"92 percent of repeat phubbers go on to become politicians".

According to Katy Steinmetz, reporter with Time, phubbing"has a much greater potential to hamper(阻碍)real-life connections by making people around us feel like we care more about posts than their presence". She believes it is the reason why the campaign can resonate(产生共鸣)with people and is getting press around the world.

In the UK,Glamour magazine even imagined just how Jane Austen would have satirized(讽刺)those in need of social etiquette(礼节)when it comes to using their smartphone. Or,to paraphrase(意译)the novelist, how it is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man(or woman)in possession of a good smartphone must be in want of manners.

1The example in the opening paragraph is used to show

A.how people benefit from modern technology

B.how to reply text messages and e-mails properly

C.how to avoid hurting your friends'feelings

D.how mobile phone addiction damages our social relations

    2The purpose of the"Stop Phubbing"campaign is to_

A.persuade people to stop using mobile phones

B.give professional advice to phubbing victims

C.help people realize the rudeness of phubbing behaviors

D.encourage people to spend more time with their family

3Which of the following statement is TRUE according to the article?

A.People who often phub are more likely to make a successful politician.

B.Pointing or picking one's nose are common symptoms of phubbers.

C.Phubbing is against human nature in that we do need real-life connections.

D.More than one third British would rather not answer a message than phub their friends.

4What is the tone of the last paragraph?

    A.serious

    B.humorous

    C.doubtful

    D.disagreeing

  • 23、Growing up, I understood one thing about my dad: He knew everything. This was our relationship, in sum: I asked him questions and he told me the answers. When I moved out on my own, I called him at least once a week, usually when something broke in my apartment and I needed to know how to fix it: the toilet, the air-conditioning…

But then, eventually, I needed him less. I got married, and my husband had most of the knowledge I lacked about water heaters and nondestructive insect removal. For everything else, we had the Internet. I don’t know when it happened, but our conversations when I called declined to six words. Me: “Hi, Dad.” Him: “Hi, sweets. Here’s Mom.” I loved my dad, of course, but I wondered at times if maybe he had already shared everything I needed to know.

Then, this past summer, my husband, our four kids, and I moved in with my parents for three weeks while our house was being repaired. They own a lake house, and Dad asked me to help him rebuild the bulkhead at their dock (码头的舱壁). It was hard labor. But as we put the new bulkhead together piece by piece, my dad knowing exactly what went where, I looked at him. “How do you know how to build a bulkhead?”

The heavy mallet (木槌) he was swinging paused in midair. “I spent a summer in college building them on the Jersey Shore.” “You did?” I thought I knew everything about my dad—all his random jobs. I knew about the apple farm, the summer at the hot sauce manufacturing plant, and even the diner line-cook position, where he learned how to make the best omelet in the world. But I never knew this.

“Yep. Now let me teach you how to use this saw.”

As he explained the importance of not bending too low, I realized that maybe it’s not that there’s nothing left to say. Maybe it’s just that I’ve spent my life asking him the wrong questions.

A few weeks later, after my family and I moved back into our renovated house, I called my parents. Dad answered. “Hi, sweets,” he said. “Here’s Mom.” “Wait, Dad,” I said. “How are you?” We ended up talking about the consulting job he was working on, a new battery he’d bought for his sailboat, a refinance my husband and I were looking into to relieve our home loan. Nothing life-changing. To anyone else, it would sound like a normal conversation between a dad and his daughter.

But to me, it was novel. A new beginning. I spent the first part of my life needing to talk to my dad. Now I talk to him because I want to.

【1】Why did the author’s conversations with her dad become shorter over time?

A.She got married and didn’t have time to talk.

B.Her dad became less talkative as he got older.

C.She realized that her dad didn’t know everything.

D.She felt that she needed less help from her father.

【2】What did the author find while living with her parents this past summer?

    A.Her father was quite talkative.

B.Her father was keen on making things by himself.

C.She didn’t know as much about her father as she had thought.

D.She didn’t notice her father was aged and needed her assistance.

【3】Why did the author call her dad after she moved back into her renovated house?

A.To learn more about her father’s past experiences.

B.To catch up and try to have a normal conversation.

C.To ask for help with more household repairing tips.

D.To thank him for letting her and her family stay with him.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for this passage?

A.DIY with my dad: Learning to be independent

B.From fixing toilets to building bulkheads: Changing my lifestyle

C.Reconnecting with my father: A lesson in asking the right questions

D.Lessons in self-sufficiency: How Google replaced my dad’s knowledge

  • 24、   John H. Johnson was born in a black family in Arkansas City in 1918. His father died in an accident when John was six. He was reaching high school age, but his hometown offered no high school for blacks.

Fortunately he had a strong-willed, caring mother. John remembers that his mother told him many times, “Son, you can be anything you really want to be if you just believe.” She told him not to be dependent on others, including his mother. “You have to earn success,” said she. “All the people who work hard don’t succeed, but the only people who do succeed are those who work hard.”

These words came from a woman less than a third grade education. She also knew that believing and hard work don’t mean everything. So she worked hard as a cook for two years to save enough to take her son — then 15 — to Chicago.

Chicago in 1933 was not the promised land that black southerners were looking for, John’s mother and stepfather could not find work. But there John could go to school, and there he learned the power of words — as editor of the newspaper and yearbook of Du Stable High School. His wish was to publish a magazine for blacks.

While others discouraged him, John’s mother offered him more words to live by: “Nothing beats a failure but a try.” She also let him pawn (典当) her furniture to get the $500 he needed to start the Negro magazine.

It is natural the difficulties and failures followed John closely until he became very successful. He always keeps his mother’s words in mind. “Son, failure is not in your vocabulary.”

Now John H. Johnson is one of the 400 richest people in America — worth $150 million.

【1】Why did John’s mother decide to move to Chicago? Because ________.

A.John’s father died in his hometown when he was very young

B.life was too hard for them to stay on in their hometown, while life in Chicago would be better for blacks

C.there were no schools for blacks in their hometown

D.John needed more education and he could go to school there

【2】Which of the following is TRUE?

A.Chicago was the promised land for black southerners in 1933.

B.John’s mother worked hard as a cook to make their life better.

C.With the help of his mother, John got the money to start the Negro magazine.

D.Now John is the richest man in America.

【3】What kind of woman was John’s mother? She was a ________.

    A.strong woman with much knowledge

B.woman who would do anything for her son

C.woman with little school education but knew a lot about life

D.loving mother with different kinds of experience in life

【4】The underlined sentence in the fifth paragraph means ________.

A.if you try, you will succeed in the end

B.a failure is difficult to beat, even if you try

C.a try is always followed by a failure

D.nothing but a try can help you out of failure
