  • 21、Be yourself

“Be yourself.” Perhaps you’ve heard people say this to you before , but you’ re not really sure what it means.【1】But being yourself really means being true to yourself. To be yourself, though, you have to learn about yourself.

Get to know your inner self.

Write down things that are important to you, such as being honest, playing fair or being a good friend. It’ s not about whether you prefer peanut butter to marmalade on your toast, it’ s about what makes you feel happy and comfortable with yourself. It’s about knowing what makes you feel awkward or sad. 【2】

Don’t always do things to please others.

If you do what others want all the time, it’s easy to forget about yourself and what you want.【3】Don’ t always go along with the crowd, but stop and take a breath first. Ask yourself if this is right for you.

    Learn what your limits are.

【4】It’s about understanding what is OK with you and what isn’ t. Without boundaries, it’ s easy for people to walk all over you and take advantage of you. If you set boundaries, you will recognise when people are trying to cross them.

    【5】

Learn to love all your little odd habits and the things that are unique to you. This may be something about your appearance, or it could be the way you speak or the type of music you like. You don’t have to be the same as everyone else to be loved or liked.

    A.Behave differently.

    B.Appreciate yourself.

    C.This is called setting boundaries.

D.Who else would you be, after all?

E.It’s the things that matter to you, deep down.

F.If you find yourself doing this, ask yourself why.

G.You should, instead, put yourself into others’ shoes.

  • 22、An increase in students applying to study economics at university is being attributed to (归因于)the global economic crisis (危机) awakening a public thirst for knowledge about how the financial system works.

Applications for degree courses beginning this autumn were up by 15% this January, according to UCAS, the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. A spokesman for the Royal Economic Society said applications to do economics at A-level were also up.

Professor John Beath, the president of the society and a leading lecturer at St Andrews University, said his first-year lectures-which are open to students from all departments-were drawing crowds of 400, rather than the usual 250.

“There are a large number of students who are not economics majors, who would like to learn something about it. One of the things I have done this year is to relate my teaching to contemporary events in a way that one hasn’t traditionally done.” He said.

University applications rose 7% last year, but there were rises above average in several subjects. Nursing saw a 15% jump, with people’s renewed interest in careers in the public sector(部门), which are seen as more secure in economic crisis.

A recent study showed almost two thirds of parents believed schools should do more to teach pupils about financial matters, and almost half said their children had asked them what was going on, although a minority of parents felt they did not understand it themselves well enough to explain.

Zack Hocking, the head of Child Trust Funds, said: “It’s possible that one good thing to arise from the downturn will be a generation that’s financially wiser and better equipped to manage their money through times of economic uncertainty.”

  • 23、A Photographer's Experience in Iceland

In an ice cave, the distance between you and the rich blue ice around you disappears. I walked into one such cave in southern Iceland, delicately through a tunnel of circular ice arches. 【1】 And as I looked around in wonder, I simply forgot that I existed. As I walked deeper, the tunnel closed in tighter and I could touch both sides with my extended arms. 【2】

My friends often comment with disbelief, “Aren't you cold out there?” And I have to answer, “Of course not.” 【3】 The simple fact of the matter is that I love being warm - in cold places. I love suffering the discomfort so that in return I can experience the wonderful feeling of being alive. But most of all, I love the light. The light in the Arctic (北极) is precisely the opposite of the tropical beaches. That kind of light is a photographer's dream.

I fell in love with the Arctic as it's such a mysterious and magical destination, where the photographer is forced to slow down, to see and hear the whales breaking through the sea ice, or brave the veil (面纱) of polar night. 【4】 I can just make pictures in a mere instant using my smartphone, stick it back in my pocket, and jump right back into the experience.

【5】 Fierce winds, often sustained at 40 mph, as well as downpours of cold rain are quite common there. But that's the price we pay to bring back images. Taking photographs, or even just being in the Arctic may be a challenge, but it's a unique life that few have ever experienced.

    A.But that hides the truth.

B.You can experience the culture here.

C.They towered over me at roughly 6 meters high.

D.It opens up a good many amazing opportunities.

E.When shooting, I have to bear tough conditions.

F.There was already no distance between me and the ice.

G.This is where the experiences are so fascinating that a big camera is just in the way.

  • 24、Bristol University will offer students lessons in happiness. The university is offering the 12-week course to students from all university disciplines next year, which will count towards 20 of their 120 credit points for their first year on campus. The course, to be taught by Professor Bruce Hood, an expert who studies how the brain works and how humans think, will explore what happiness is and how to achieve it.

Last year, 400 students signed up for a pilot happiness course at the university, which did not result in academic credits, as part of the university’s efforts to improve well-being. Professor Hood said, “We’re really excited that the university has got behind the course. This course will be built and established on what we’ve already learnt in the first year but of course we’re going to monitor the students much more closely because it’s for academic credits. They can’t take an easy option—they’ve really got to put in a lot of effort.”

The voluntary course was originally introduced amid(在……当中)growing concerns about student mental health. Last year, students called for more support and services for young people with mental health issues at the university. Under the new course, students will attend a one-hour lecture each week as well as attending a “happiness hub”. Lectures will address a series of issues, including whether happiness is in the genes and if it can really be changed, how our minds influence happiness and the role of culture in happiness.

Students will be asked to select one of seven happiness exercises to practise for a week, and then evaluate(评估) the effect it has on them. This will be discussed at the weekly happiness hub meetings. The exercises include sleeping more, meditating(冥想), expressing gratitude for people and things, and practising random acts of kindness.

【1】Who will get credit points on the lessons in happiness?

    A.The twelfth graders.

    B.Graders of all periods.

    C.Senior students.

    D.The freshmen.

【2】How will the students find the happiness course?

    A.Encouraging.

    B.Exciting.

    C.Difficult.

    D.Simple.

【3】What can students do by taking the happiness course?

A.They can give speeches on different issues.

B.They can learn how minds affect happiness.

C.They can evaluate the effect on each other.

D.They can influence the part of culture in happiness.

  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as fars as possible.

Once it was possible to define male and female roles easily by the division of labor. Men worked outside the home and earned the income to support their families, while women cooked the meals and took care of the home and the children. These roles were firmly fixed for most people, and there was not much opportunity for women to exchange their roles. But by the middle of this century, men’s and women’s roles were becoming less firmly fixed.

In the 1950s, economic and social success was the goal of the typical American. But in the 1960s a new force developed called the counterculture. The people involved in this movement did not value the middle-class American goals. The counterculture presented men and women with new role choices. Taking more interest in childcare, men began to share child-raising tasks with their wives. In fact, some young men and women moved to communal homes or farms where the economic and childcare responsibilities were shared equally by both sexes. In addition, many Americans did not value the traditional male role of soldier. Some young men refused to be drafted as soldiers to fight in the war in Vietnam.

In terms of numbers, the counterculture was not a very large group of people. But its influence spread to many parts of American society. Working men of all classes began to change their economic and social patterns. Industrial workers and business executives alike cut down on “overtime” work so that they could spend more leisure time with their families. Some doctors, lawyers, and teachers turned away from high paying situations to practice their professions in poorer neighborhoods.

In the 1970s, the feminist movement, or women’s liberation, produced additional economic and social changes. Women of all ages and at all levels of society were entering the work force in greater numbers. Most of them still took traditional women’s jobs as public school teaching, nursing, and secretarial work. But some women began to enter traditionally male occupations: police work, banking, dentistry, and construction work. Women were asking for equal work, and equal opportunities for promotion.

Today the experts generally agree that important changes are taking place in the roles of men and women. Naturally, there are difficulties in adjusting to these transformations.
