22、Parents often assume that time spent with their kids will gradually decrease in adolescence. But a new study suggests that while teens try to avoid spending a lot of time together with their parents, private parent-child meetings may actually increase in their early adolescent years. And that may raise a teenager’s self-esteem (自尊) an social confidence, especially if it is time spent with Dad, the researchers added.
The researchers created a long-term study in which they invited families in 16 school districts in central Pennsylvania to participate. In each family, a teenager, a younger sibling, their mother and their father were interviewed at home and then asked about their activities and self-worth five times over a period of seven years.
The study authors were surprised to discover that when fathers spent more time alone with their teenagers, the kids reported they felt better about themselves. Something about the father’s role in the family seemed to improve self-esteem among the teenagers in the study, said study author Susan McHale, a professor of human development at Pennsylvania State University.
“Time spent with Dad often involves joking, teasing and other playful interactions. Fathers, as compared to mothers, were more involved in leisure activities and had more friend-like interactions with their children, which is crucial for youth social development,” the study showed.
But Marta Flaum, a psychologist in Chappaqua , New York, said, “How these findings reflect the real world is a real question. The sample in the study is so small and so unrepresentative of more families in the country today that I’m not sure how much we can generalizing from it. In my community, in Westchester County, I don’t see parents and teenagers spending much time together at all. Parents are often working so hard and have less time to be together with their kids.”
However, Flaum encourages parents tom make time for their kids no matter how much work they have to do. “Research like this reminds us of how important it is. The time we have with them is so short, ” she said.
【1】According to the study, when teenagers spend more time alone with their fathers, ________.
A. their social skills will be improved
B. their fathers will better understand them
C. they will be willing to help their siblings
D. their family will spend more time together

23、What does a PhD student do? I am a PhD girl student being responsible for the tear where undergraduate and master students work together. They work on different aspects of my project and other projects in the team. I offer them advice and sort out issues they have. I also assist them with computer-aided design (CAD), programming, and teach them how to use some equipment, like 3D printers. Being in charge of the research group while working or my PhD is also a learning process for me. There is so much support from my supervisors and senior students. There is usually someone to turn to for help!
I start my day at 5 am. I will read some papers and work on my project before heading to the lab in the hospital at 11:00. This summer, our team consists of 40 students, so the lab is usually occupied when I get there. I will attend some meetings, meet with students, and then program or work on CAD.
The best part of my research work is the flexibility in that it involves both software and hardware development. Whenever I get stuck on the programming part, I will move onto CAD for a break. It does not require me to be attached to my screen at all times, which can be quite refreshing.
My project about the development of a robotic system impresses me a lot. A huge milestone for me is designing and developing my first model of a robot. It is quite satisfying to make progress and be reminded of the great potential my research has for improving the current medical treatment.
I think I can progress even further if I have more confidence in myself and ask others for help when I need it most. In my opinion, it doesn’t matter who you want to ask for help, because they may know more about the topic than you do. So, expose yourself to people in the roles you wish to be in and make lots of connections!
【1】What does the author think of being responsible for the research group?
A.Troublesome.
B.Beneficial.
C.Effortless.
D.Casual.
【2】What satisfies the author most in the study?
A.Reading some papers.
B.Freely choosing subjects.
C.Asking teachers for help.
D.Relaxing by switching work.
【3】What does the author convey in paragraph 4?
A.Her pride in the research result.
B.The importance of teamwork in the research.
C.The difficulty of developing a robotic system.
D.Her confusion about designing a robot model.
【4】What does the author want to tell us to do in the last paragraph?
A.Offer to help others.
B.Expose our abilities to others.
C.Turn to others for help when necessary.
D.Cooperate with other people as we wish.
24、 The widespread application of internet technology has made our lives easier but poses a big challenge to senior citizens, who are not always comfortable with smart phones and so many new apps.
In China, only a few senior citizens are able to enjoy the benefits that new technologies offer. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the number of people aged 60 and above was 253.88 million in 2019, that is 18 percent of China's population. But only 23 percent of the senior citizens were able to access the internet. That means more than three-fourths of the elderly are deprived of the digital convenience.
Failure to access the internet or use smart phones has increased difficulties for them. They cannot even take a taxi easily in this era of app cabs. There have been reports of many shops turning away elders who don't know how to pay using smart phones, instead of letting them pay in cash. Many elders who can't use smart phones are facing difficulties during this pandemic, as they cannot access the internet-based health code required for entry into many public places as part of the epidemic prevention and control measures.
New technologies become popular because they are often of great use in our daily lives. But many senior citizens, especially those living in rural areas or those whose grownup children don't live with them, cannot access the internet or smart phones, either because of financial restrictions or because they cannot learn new things beyond a certain point. The digital gap between the elderly and the young is becoming more pronounced.
However, the senior citizens should not become a silent group deprived of digital benefits. It is society's responsibility to help them bridge the digital gap, and be patient with them when they face difficulties keeping pace with times.
【1】What do we learn from the text?
A.Not all the elderly are able to enjoy the smart life services.
B.Internet technology has made everyone's life easier.
C.About one-fourth people have easy access to the internet.
D.Smart phones and apps are not designed for the elderly.
【2】What fact do the examples in Paragraph 3 present?
A.Many elders don't know how to hire a taxi.
B.Many elders always go shopping without their smart phones.
C.Many elders have trouble in using the health code.
D.Many elders are not allowed to enter public places during the pandemic.
【3】Which is the closest in meaning to the underlined word in Paragraph 4?
A.Predictable. B.Obvious. C.Avoidable. D.Narrow.
【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Digital gap makes everything harder.
B.Grownup children should live with the elderly with digital problems.
C.The society should be responsible for the elderly's digital problems.
D.The internet technology provides easy lives for seniors in all respects.

26、Directions: road the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point (s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
A plan to restore green spaces
The UK government has revealed a plan to protect and restore England’s wild life. It focuses on at-risk species by making canals, rivers and streams cleaner and expanding green spaces.
The new Environmental Improvement Plan sets goals to create or restore more than 5,000 square kilometres of wildlife habitats across England and restore 400 miles of rivers. It will create or expand 25 national nature reserves. New woodland will also be planted alongside rivers. At the moment, access to green spaces is not equal across the UK. Around 4% of people live more than 10 minutes away from their nearest park. The Environmental Improvement Plan aims to make sure households in England are within a 15-minute walk to a green space.
As well as helping more people to act close to nature, the plan should increase England’s biodiversity. A species Survival Fund will be set up to help some of England’s most endangered animals, such as red squirrels (松鼠) and watch rats. The Government has set targets to boost these species by 2030. There are also targets to reduce food waste, glass, metal, paper and plastic by 2028, and to improve the quality of water in rivers.
New rules mean that the Government will have to consider the environmental effects of any policy it puts forward. These goals are part of a 25- year plan that was launched in 2018. The aim of the plan is to improve the environment “within a generation ” which is roughly 25 years.
Although lots of people have welcomed the plan, not everyone is impressed. Pail de Zylva, from the charity Friends of the Earth, said it wasn’t clear enough how the goals would be met and that many of them were like promises the Government had already made but not yet delivered.
