二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、In 2007, a group of researchers began testing a concept that seems, at first blush, as if it would never need testing: whether more happiness is always better than less. The researchers asked college students to rate their feelings from “unhappy” to “very happy” and compared the results with academic and social outcomes. Though the “very happy” participants had the best social lives, they performed worse in school than those who were merely “happy.”

As with everything in life, happiness has its trade-offs. It may give you a life that you find you don’t want, one in which you don’t reach your full potential, you’re reluctant to take risks, and you choose short-lived pleasures over challenging experiences that give life meaning.

The way to understand the study above is not to deny that happiness is good; rather, it is to remember that a little bit of unhappiness has benefits. The author Emmy Gut argued in 1989 that some depressive symptoms can be a functional response to problems in the environment, leading us to pay appropriate attention and come up with solutions. In other words, when we are sad about something, we may be more likely to fix it. Psychologists call this the “analytical rumination hypothesis”.

Obviously, this is not to argue that clinical depression is good — misery can quickly make people incapable of solving problems. Rather, the analytical rumination hypothesis is evidence that getting rid of bad feelings does not necessarily make us more effective in our tasks. And if these emotions can help us assess threats, it stands to reason that too much good feeling can lead us to disregard them. The literature on substance use suggests that this is so: In some people, very high degrees of positive emotion have been connected to dangerous behaviors such as alcohol and drug use and binge eating.

So though suffering should never be anyone’s goal, each of us can fight for a rich life in which we not only seek the sunshine but fully experience the rain that unavoidably falls as well.

【1】What can be concluded from the 2007 study about happiness?

    A.More happiness is always better.

B.Full happiness is not totally beneficial.

C.People should avoid happiness to lead a meaningful life.

D.Very happy subjects perform better than merely happy ones.

【2】What do we know about analytical rumination hypothesis?

A.People who are sad are not likely to take risks.

B.Bad feelings like depression might help solve problems.

C.People with depressive symptoms tend to ignore threats.

D.Clinical depression can lead to effective task performance.

【3】Which of the following would the author probably agree?

    A.We should avoid good feelings.

B.A risky life is going to bring disappointment.

C.Happiness itself would lose its meaning without misfortune.

D.Dislike to happiness can lead us to abandon a meaningful life.

  • 22、“Boreout (闷爆) is different from burnout (精疲力竭) in the sense that bored-out employees rarely break down with exhaustion. Bored-out people may be present physically but not in spirit, and people can keep doing this for a good while,” says Harju, who has studied boreout for years.

Workers who realize they’re experiencing boreout may also be unwilling to flag it up as an issue to line managers or human resources. “While the behaviors that feed into burnout — overwork, drive — are appreciated and rewarded by employers, boreout reflects a lack of interest, a lack of motivation,” says Harju. “These are things that are avoided in organizations.”

There are some quick fixes, like taking on work tasks that are more interesting to you. But a 2016 study Harju and her colleagues worked on showed that people who had boreout were less likely to engage in constructive activities like trying to find new, interesting challenges at work.

What happens more often, she says, is that people will just show up at their desks and spend time shopping online, chatting with colleagues or planning other activities. She says that these people aren’t lazy, but are using these behaviours as “coping mechanisms”.

Fahri Ozsungur, an associate professor of economics at Mersin University, Turkey, who was behind the 2021 study on the health effects of boreout, points out that combating the phenomenon isn’t just down to the individual. “Giving meaning to the job is not just up to the employees,” he says. “Instead, it’s up to management to create an office culture that makes people feel valuable.”

If you think boreout is seriously affecting your health either physically or mentally, it may be valuable to ask yourself how you might be able to reselect your career path toward something healthier for you. Seek the advice from advisers, career consultants, friends and family.

“If only people take its suggestion, boreout can make a change into something else: a different career entirely, or a different role in the organization,” Harju says.

【1】What is the purpose of the first paragraph?

A.To introduce the topic of the text.

    B.To describe people with burnout.

    C.To explain what burnout is.

D.To tell us who Harju is.

【2】Why do people prefer not to talk about their boreout?

    A.They lack relevant knowledge.

B.They are warned not to talk about it.

C.They may not want it to be known to employers.

D.They fear to be laughed at by their colleagues.

【3】What does the underlined word “combating” in paragraph 5 mean?

    A.Encouraging.

    B.Blaming.

    C.Trusting.

    D.Fighting.

【4】Which of the following may Harju agree with?

    A.Forcing employers to increase salaries.

B.Sticking to the job until you adapt to it.

C.Trying spending more time with your family.

D.Considering changing a new job interesting you.

  • 23、Part of buying a home is making it your own. That can mean a huge number of things, from the simple act of repainting to something more adventurous, like adopting a brand-new lifestyle.

For the Wright family —Yvonna, Brett and their two daughters, Marley and Lola — creating a home of their own meant stepping outside their New York City comfort zone. It was a major shift, but they found a whole new level of contentment not too far from where they started. Now, the Wrights are raising chickens, keeping bees and planning a future as a farmhouse family in the Hudson Valley, just north of Manhattan.

As longtime residents of Harlem, Brett and Yvonna Wright didn’t always consider farm life their destiny(命运). But after finding success in the worlds of entertainment and publishing, they felt the need to build something their whole family could own for years to come. The brownstones of Harlem were difficult to leave behind, but the promise of open space, fresh air and boundless nature was too charming (迷人的) to resist.

The Wrights’ journey to homeownership wasn’t without obstacles. Their daughters were understandably a bit skeptical about moving. It can be difficult to have your life uprooted at any age, and for city kids moving to the country, the culture shock includes adapting to a whole new lifestyle.

Since buying their home, farm life has suited the Wrights even better than they had hoped. The charms of county life won over their daughters more quickly than anyone could have expected. Now, they are helping Mom and Dad with their business, Lomar Farms. It might seem like a total reinvention, but this family is well equipped to create a life as sweet as honey.

【1】What can we say about the farmhouse of the Wright family?

    A.It is located in Harlem.

B.It was owned by a relative.

C.It used to be a publishing house.

D.It is not too far from their old home.

【2】What is paragraph 3 centered on?

    A.How the family lived.

    B.Why the family moved.

    C.What the family are doing.

    D.Where the family come from.

【3】Which of the following can replace the underlined word “uprooted”?

    A.Improved.

    B.Settled.

    C.Changed.

    D.Insured.

【4】What do the Wrights think of their present life?

A.It is a satisfaction to them all.

    B.It is kind of adventurous.

C.It is out of their comfort zone.

D.It is a shock to their neighbors.

  • 24、   Until now little research has been conducted on the association between parents' friendships and the emotional well-being of their adolescent children A new study from researchers at the University of Missouri suggests that mothers' friendships with other adults can impact their adolescent children's relationships with their own friends particularly the negative aspects of these relationships such as conflict and opposition

Gary C Glick a doctoral candidate at MU and Amanda Rose professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences studied the development of friendships and other peer relationships during adolescence and their impact on psychological adjustment They found that adolescents may mimic the negative characteristics of their mothers' relationships in their own peer-to-peer friendships suggesting that mothers can serve as role models for their adolescents during formative years

"Mothers who display high levels of conflict with friends may signal to their children that such behavior is acceptable or even standard in friendships" Glick said "Additional findings suggest that adolescents take for granted their reactions to their mothers' conflict with adult friends which may lead to anxiety and depression"

Previous research of this type focused on primary-aged children but MU researchers wanted to expand their study to focus on the formative adolescent years Youth ranging in age from 10 to 17 and their mothers were surveyed separately to measure regarded positive and negative friendship qualities in both groups Results showed that positive friendship qualities were not always imitated by adolescents however negative and unfriendly relationship characteristics exhibited by mothers were much more likely to be copied by the youth studied "We know that conflict is a normal part of any relationship---whether it is a relationship between a parent and a child or a mother and her friends---and we're not talking physical fights but oral conflicts" Glick said "But being exposed to high levels of such conflict generally isn't going to be good for children Parents should consider whether they are good role models for their children especially where their friends are concerned When things go wrong parents should talk with their children about how to act with their friends but more specifically how not to act"

    1The word "mimic" in Para.2means ______

    A. succeed B. discover

    C. possess D. imitate

2In comparison with the previous study the new study expanded ______

    A. research goals B. research themes

    A. how to put an end to a wrong friendship

    B. how to deal with a troubled friendship

    C. Conflicts and opposition form children's characters

    D. Parent-child relationship affects children's growth
