21、 Since birth, Joy and Miriam were left at the gate of an orphanage (孤儿院). For the disabled sisters, who both have spina bifida (脊柱裂), it may have seemed that all hopes were lost at that time. But after being adopted by a British couple, they have become two of the country's most promising wheelchair basketball stars.
In 2005, the Haizes adopted them. Then, they moved to the UK when Joy was six and Miriam was seven. The girls discovered the wheelchair basketball through a chance conversation, which Mr. Haize had with a friend in 2011. They hadn't known wheelchair sports before, but Joy was hooked from the beginning.
While Miriam loved the sport, it took her a little longer to become a serious athlete. “I used to have really low self-respect,” she said. “It's only when Joy got into the Under 25s European Championships in 2013 that I started to take basketball seriously. It gave me a path to follow.” Miriam was then chosen to play at both regional trials and the Sainsbury's School Games in 2014. Of course, she earned herself a place at the famous GB Futures training camp. “GB Futures helped me a lot. It helped me take basketball to another level and learn more about the game and its history. It also helped me be more independent,” said Miriam. Meanwhile, Joy is currently the youngest player on the GB women's team — but she is making her mark on the international stage, having represented Great Britain in tournaments (锦标赛) all over the world.
The teenagers are now eager to encourage others to explore the world of wheelchair sports. “You should have confidence in yourself. That's the one thing to help you succeed. Having setbacks helped me grow into a person and player. No matter what people said to us, we just tried our best,” said the girls.

23、 Full of old-style houses, Wuzhen in Zhejiang province has long been a tourist attraction. But a few days ago, this ancient town was unusually full of people. It hosted the third annual World Internet Conference, held between Nov 16 and 18.
Tech firm bosses, academics and government officials went there to share their understanding of the event’s theme – “Innovation-driven (创新驱动的) Internet Development for the Benefit of All – Building a Community of Common Future in Cyberspace (网络空间)”.
When it comes to innovation, many tech firms in China are looking at artificial intelligence.
Baidu’s latest development is based on AI technology. It’s called Baidu Brain, an artificial intelligence project that aims to greatly improve computing by copying the way the human brain operates. It can be used to tell which diseases patients have. According to a test at Peking University International Hospital, 80 percent of its technology’s diagnosis (诊断) results agree with the opinions of doctors.
Another tech giant, Alibaba, is also trying to make use of AI.
During the conference, Alibaba’s Ant Financial company showed off its “Smile to Pay” technology. Registered (注册的) users can complete transactions (交易) by simply having their face scanned by a computer screen at the cashier’s (收银员的) desk, without having to put in a PIN number or open an app, according to China Radio International.
The Chinese market for AI technology is huge. But Zhang Yaqin, president of Baidu, told Xinhua, “AI cannot do everything, but it will certainly free people from repetitive jobs. Our ultimate (最终的) goal is to let people do more creative and interesting things.”

24、Recently, a big change quietly took place in agriculture. Yet neither drought nor frost is ever a concern for growers of plants currently grown inside large greenhouses. Vegetables are increasingly being grown indoors, using an advanced form of growing called controlled environment agriculture, a method that has the potential to help feed the planet, even while it threatens to further warm it.
Controlled environment agriculture has many advantages. Crops are not subject to unexpected extreme weather. Furthermore, these greenhouses can produce more food with fewer pesticides and less water. With computer-controlled temperatures and nutrients, the plants grow with less water and produce much higher yields. Above all, the produce can be bred for flavor, instead of for tolerance to heat, rain and long-distance transportation.
The carbon footprint of any given greenhouse tomato can vary quite a bit depending on energy sources, surrounding temperatures and natural light. But various studies have estimated that, on average, the production of a pound of tomatoes in an American or northern European greenhouse releases 3 to 3.5 pounds of carbon into the atmosphere. That is about 6 times the caron footprint of a field tomato, even taking into account the emissions from refrigerated trucks that often transport field vegetables hundreds or even thousands of miles to reach consumers. Greenhouses, by contrast, can be built near major population centers.
Nevertheless, in a rapidly warming world, should we be increasing agriculture’s contribution by moving some of it indoors? “We have little choice,” say advocates. “With the global population expected to grow by 25 percent to nearly 10 billion people by 2050,food production will need to increase by 60 percent to 100 percent. With freshwater supplies and land suitable for farming decreasing, and droughts getting worse due to climate change, where will this additional food come from?”
