二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Moscow city authorities have begun using comics with characters from Russian fairytales to explain to migrants how they should behave. They say a 100-page guide is needed to “maintain a positive image” of the city and could help reduce “tensions” between natives and migrants. But some people have pointed out that foreign immigrants and natives may be viewed as antagonists in the manual(手册). They think immigrants and natives should live together in harmony.

Russians and immigrants have repeatedly clashed in Moscow recently. Many immigrants from ex-Soviet republics in Central Asia, the Caucasus and North Caucasus, arrive in Moscow every year, attracted by the capital's job opportunities and relatively high salaries. A significant number of them work in the Russian capital illegally.

The new guide in Russian seeks to explain the “dos” and" don'ts" to immigrants. They are urged not to cause trouble,by staring at women,or eating or talking loudly on the streets. They are also warned that the police may routinely stop them to check their documents.

In the manual,Russia's famous“Three warriors”are meant to represent the city's law enforcement agencies, while Prince Yuri Dolgoruky (a historical character)is used for tours around Moscow. Meanwhile,Vasilisa the Wise and The Snow Maiden test the reader on Russia's language and history. A special section of the book explains the importance of following Moscow's strict residency and employment rules, stressing that immigrants could otherwise be deported(驱逐出境)or banned from entry.

The manual was written primarily for illegal immigrants,Alexander Kalinin, who heads the group Support for Working Migrants in Moscow, told BBC Russian.

“We want to raise their level of law awareness,”he added.

In the beginning immigrants had been identified as representatives of deferent nationalities, but the book's authors later decided to drop this idea so as "not to offend anyone", said Mr. Kalinin.

"The old conflict between Russian heroes and non-Slavic invaders appears again,"

Yevgeny Varshaver, a migration expert told BBC Russian. He also suggested that the language used in the book would be "difficult" to understand for some immigrants who were not native Russian speakers.

  • 22、People who include a little yoga or tai chi in their day may be more likely to remember where they put their keys. Researchers at the University of California, Irvine and Japan’s University of Tsukuba found that even very light, workouts can increase the connectivity between parts of the brain responsible for memory formation and storage.

In a study of 36 healthy young adults, the researchers discovered that a single 10-minute period of mild exercise can yield considerable cognitive benefits. Using special tools, the team examined subjects’ brains shortly after exercise sessions and saw better connectivity between the hippocampus (海马体) and cortical areas linked to detailed memory processing.

“The hippocampus is critical for the creation of new memories, it’s one of the first regions of the brain to become worse as we get older-and much more severely in Alzheimer’s (老年痴呆) disease,” said project co-leader Michael Yassa. “Improving the function of the hippocampus holds much promise for improving memory in everyday settings.”

A little bit of physical activity can go a long way, Yassa, director of UCI’s Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory, stressed, “It’s encouraging to see more people keeping track of their exercise habits—by monitoring the number of steps they're taking, for example,” he said. “Even short walking breaks throughout the day may have considerable effects on improving memory and cognition.”

Yassa and his colleagues at UCI and at the University of Tsukuba are extending this method of research by testing older adults who are at greater risk of age-related mental damage and by conducting long-term interventions (干预) to see if regular, brief, light exercise done daily for several weeks or months can have a positive impact on the brain’s structure and function in these subjects.

【1】What is the research centred on?

    A.People’s ways of working out.

B.The benefits of exercising to the body.

C.The types of exercise benefiting memory.

D.The relation between exercise and memory.

【2】For what is the hippocampus important?

    A.Creating new memories.

    B.Adjusting body balance.

    C.Feeling weather changes.

    D.Recalling what someone did.

【3】What does the underlined world “yield” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Expect.

    B.Produce.

    C.Control.

    D.Share.

【4】What would be a best title for the text?

    A.Alzheimer destroys a person’s brain.

B.Yoga may contribute to your memory

C.Even little workout improves memory function

D.Long-term interventions make for mental damage

  • 23、Black History Month is also known as the African-American History Month. It is celebrated all over the United States of America and Canada in the month of February, while in the United Kingdom it is celebrated in October. Each and every school and university conducts various activities to make the generation aware of the importance that African-American history holds in the nation. The electronic media is filled with themes in relevance to the occasion, and many activities are carried out across the country to remember the contribution made by African-American citizens in the development of this nation.

Black History Month was first started by a famous African-American historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson in the year 1926. February was chosen as the month to celebrate the African-American history because it was the birth month of two of the most highly valued people among African-Americans. These were President Abraham Lincoln, who freed the slaves, and Frederick Douglass, who was also the first vice presidential nominee (被任命者) among African-Americans. Initially, Black History Month was known as the “Negro History Week”. • 24、No poverty, zero hunger, quality education, these are some of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs)the United Nations(UN)established in 2015. In May 2019, the UN launched the SDG Book Club; each month, it posts on the club website a selection of books that illustrate a particular SDG to help young people interact with these goals.

Batesville Intermediate School launched the Junior Ambassadors (大使) program in August 2019, using the SDG Book Club as a springboard to introduce students to a more global view on world issues. Twenty-four 4th and 5th graders met for 30 minutes four days a week to read, discuss, research, and conduct the sharing of knowledge and solutions to these issues. Research activities, special projects, and guest speakers are additional opportunities for junior ambassadors to build knowledge. What began as a desire to help small-town children expand their views grew into a broader program that affected the school, community, and beyond.

The UN’s recommendation of Serafina’s Promise by Ann E. Burg was perfect for the junior ambassadors to begin their study of the first SDG: no poverty. The book is set in Haiti, so members of local Haitian groups were invited to speak to the program participants. Then, the junior ambassadors used their newfound knowledge to create multimedia lessons, sharing them with the other 480 students.

The study of the second SDG — zero hunger — gave junior ambassadors an opportunity to organize and carry out a read- a-thon (a reading marathon) to raise funds for the Grain of Rice Project’s school initiative in Kenya. The nonprofit’s co-founder, Amy Ahiga spoke to and inspired the students with her passion for helping others.

Junior ambassadors use what they learn to engage with their community and the world, earning the school the American Library Association’s 2020 Sara Jaffarian School Library Program Award for Excellence in Humanities Programming. They can look back with pride, knowing they made a difference. With increased confidence and skills, these children will know that they can and will continue to save the world — one goal at a time.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段话,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The e-mail request came in to Ekiben restaurant in Baltimore late on a Thursday afternoon in March: tempura broccoli(天妇罗花椰菜). The man who sent the e-mail didn't actually want the food itself. He was writing on behalf of his mother-in-law, who adored the dish. He went on to explain that she was now in the final stages of lung cancer at her home in Vermont and that he was hoping to get the recipe to make it for her there.

Steve Chu, one of the Asian restaurant's co-owners, read the e-mail and quickly replied with an alternative suggestion. "Thanks for reaching out." he wrote. "We'd like to meet you in Vermont and make it fresh for you."

Brandon Jones, the son-in-law, was shocked. He e-mailed back, saying, "You do know that this is Vermont we're talking about, right?" said Brandon. But Steve responded, "No problem. You tell us the date, time, and location and we'll be there."

For the past six years, every time Brandon's mother-in-law visited Baltimore, the first place she wanted to go was Ekiben so she could have that broccoli. "I really wanted her to have it one more time," Brandon said.

"She had always told us, 'When I'm on my deathbed, I want to have that broccoli,'" recalled Brandon's wife. Rina Jones.
