二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Ajay Gupta suffered from polio (小儿麻痹症) when he was six months old. However, seeing his father and grandfather run businesses aroused a deep sense of curiosity within Ajay to explore entrepreneurship.

While sending his daughter to playschool, he realized there was a gap in the quality of education provided. That’s when the idea of starting a playschool chain struck him. He launched Bachpan Play School in 2004 using his personal savings. Starting with one branch in Delhi, today the school has scaled up to 1,100 branches across India.

According to Ajay, what is unique about Bachpan’s story is the impact it has been able to create across Tier Il and Tier III cities in India. “Education institutes seem crowded in big cities, but when you move away from them, the case is different,” says Ajay. Furthermore, in the smaller cities, many schools were established around 40 years ago, and they lacked quality.

Ajay did not set out to penetrate (渗透) Tier II and Tier III cities exactly. His mission was to make preschool education more accessible and standardized. “I did not want Bachpan Play School to be a place where you send your kid for two months,” he says. “We made clear guidelines for teachers and syllabuses (教学大纲) for the kids monthly and annually.” Ajay adds that the particular curriculum, design, books, and well-thought-out strategy along with professional training are what shapes the core of Bachpan Play School chain.

As offline classes shifted to online ones during the pandemic, Ajay’s company launched Bachpan Live platform in April 2020. It also launched Bachpan Live app to offer live classes, online books, and more.

Since its launch, the platform has witnessed about 65,000 downloads. Ajay says, “The team has to consistently work towards improving the platform as parents of today have become very demanding. You cannot sell them anything. They want to see quality programs.”

【1】What did Ajay realize when he sent his daughter to playschool?

A.There was a gap between his daughter and him.

B.His daughter was not satisfied with her playschool.

C.He could make a big profit by running a playschool.

D.Some children couldn’t have access to quality education.

【2】What is special about Bachpan Play School?

A.It is not very competitive in big cities.

B.It is specially designed for disabled children.

C.It is financially supported by the government.

D.It has improved education quality in small cities.

【3】What did Ajay do to promote preschool education?

    A.He employed experienced teachers.

    B.He designed a two-month course for kids.

C.He made preschool education more formal.

D.He stressed the role of preschool education in society.

【4】What does Ajay expect Bachpan Live platform to do?

    A.Meet parents’ expectations.

B.Invite kids to attend online classes.

C.Replace offline classes in the future.

D.Share more books and classes online.

  • 22、NASA on September 28, 2015 announced the strongest evidence yet for liquid water on the red planet, increasing the possibility that astronauts journeying to Mars could someday rely on the planet's own water for their drinking needs.

You may feel like you've heard about the hunt for liquid water on Mars before—and the researchers involved know it may seem played out. But science has yet to truly prove that water flows on Mars once and for all, and doing so could completely change the way we view the planet. This new data is a big step in the right direction.

"Liquid water is an attractive topic, and we like the thousandth time someone has discovered water on Mars," Lujendra Ojha, the Georgia Tech PhD candidate who led the research announced Monday, told The Post. But there's a good reason that liquid water is so "attractive": Mars is now the only planet in our solar system to show evidence of the stuff on its surface, other than our own. Other worlds have it in subsurface oceans, or scattered around as vapor in the atmosphere. But Mars is the only place where we have solid evidence for liquid that sits right there in the open air. While it would be a major leap to suggest that Mars might harbor life—even microbial life—liquid water at least makes it possible that parts of the planet are habitable.

The study builds on research from April, when scientists using data from the Curiosity rover noted that the planet had the seasonal potential for liquid water. We know that because of the extremely low pressure on Mars, water has a boiling point of just a few degrees Celsius, after which it evaporates. The April study noted the presence of perchlorates (高氯酸盐) —a kind of salt—which could make the boiling point of Mars' water much higher, theoretically allowing it to remain liquid. They affirmed that the planet's temperature would be right for liquid, perchlorate-filled water to form every day during winter and spring.

【1】What does the Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?

    A. The significance of the discovery.

    B. The doubt of the discovery.

    C. The difficulty of the discovery.

    D. The expense of the discovery.

【2】The underlined words "our own" in Paragraph 3 refer to ________.

    A. Mars

    B. the earth

    C. liquid water

    D. the solar system

【3】 What plays an important role in making Mars' water in the state of liquid?

    A. The thick atmosphere around Mars.

    B. The physical structure of Mars.

    C. The extremely low pressure on Mars.

    D. Perchlorates in Mar's water.

【4】 The best title for the passage can be "________".

    A. Water on Mars could be used for dringking

    B. There might be some kinds of life on Mars

    C. NASA would send astronauts to journey to Mars

    D. NASA confirms the best-ever evidence for water on Mars

  • 23、   The fact that your hair turns grey because of stress is nothing more than an old wives' tale. It's true that stress isn't good for you, but it's not going to turn you into a silver fox just yet. In fact, the answer comes from the cells in your hair. These are what decide the color and, eventually, the fade to grey.

Most of us start to notice our first grey hairs by the time we hit our thirties. A general rule to go by is that by the age of 50,half of the population will have lost the color in 50 percent of their hair.

But why does it happen? Firstly, we need to understand how hair gets its color.

Your hair is made up of cells called melanocytes(黑色素细胞) which produce pigments(色素) as they grow into the hair fiber. There are two different types of melanins: eumelanins and pheomelanins. The former produces black and brown pigments, while the latter produces red and yellow pigments. The exact amount of these pigments decides whether a person has black, brown, blonde or red hair.

As we age, the ability of the melanocytes to produce more pigments weakens. That's because our hair grows in different periods.

The growing period lasts between three and five years, after which our follicles(毛囊) turn off for about three months to rest and get ready to grow more hairs. This goes round and round and, after a time, our bodies aren't as good at producing new hairs.

Scientists are continuing to try and find ways to prevent greying hair. A team of scientists in France is working to try and stop the melanocytes from being damaged at the end of each hair cycle. They are trying to use a special enzyme() to protect the cells from damage. If successful, it could lead the way for new products that keep our hair full of color for years to come.

1The phrase “an old wives' tale” in Paragraph 1 probably mean________

    A.a wrong belief B.useful talk

    C.a scientific rule D.helpful experience

2What do we know about red hair?

A.It doesn't turn grey as people get older.

    B.It contains more pheomelanin’s than eumelanin’s.

C.The amount of pigments in it doesn't change over time.

D.People with red hair have weaker ability to produce pigments.

3What do the French scientists aim to do?

    A.To repair damaged hair follicles.

B.To protect hair cells against damage.

C.To shorten the hair cycle to protect the hair.

D.To study the relationship between health and hair color.

4What can we infer from the article?

A.Grey hair has nothing to do with stress.

B.Grey hair is a symbol of declining health.

C.It takes three months for new hair to grow.

D.The growth and color change of hair depend on cells.

  • 24、   It was a red-letter day in the history of medicine—“Target Zero Day”, May 8th, 1980, marking the complete removal of smallpox, a terrifying disease. It was untreatable but, luckily, it turned out that vaccination(接种疫苗) provided good protection— and that mass immunization(免疫) could wipe out the smallpox virus by blocking its spread.

According to legend, vaccination was invented by Dr Edward Jenner. Jenner showed that healthy children vaccinated with cowpox, a mild infection of cattle, could not catch smallpox. He was supposedly inspired by a comment from a local milkmaid, but there is evidence that the idea came from a medical friend, John Fewster, who had experimented with cowpox. Nevertheless, Jenner deserves credit for introducing vaccination into the medical mainstream with his paper published in 1798.

In 1966, 160 years after the prediction that vaccination would clean off the disease, the World Health Organization launched its Smallpox Eradication Programme. This heroic 11-year drive was directed by two’ American public health doctors, DA Henderson and Bill Foege. Their hardships were enormous. One WHO official even promised to eat a tyre if smallpox was removed. Henderson promised to send him the tyre and wished him good appetite. But Henderson and Foege’s hard work paid off— three years after the last smallpox case was informed (to make sure no outbreaks had been missed) Target Zero Day was declared.

40 years on, why should we remember Target Zero Day? First, to celebrate victory of preventative medicine and freedom from a cruel disease. Then, we must remember the victims of smallpox. It had previously killed 1 in 12 worldwide. In 1914, a Canadian professor warned against forgetting smallpox, which was fast disappearing from North America. It went on to kill at least another 250 million people— three times more than both world wars combined. Target Zero Day also reminds us of undefeated infections, including polio, measles, malaria, and of course the coronavirus Covid-19. Let’s recognize Target Zero Day for what it isa milestone in world history and a monument to the art of the possible.

1What inspired Jenner to invent the vaccination?

A.A medical friend. B.A local milkmaid.

    C.Cattle. D.Children.

2What is the writer’s purpose of mentioning the WHO official’s promise?

A.To introduce the support from the WHO.

B.To stress the importance of good appetite.

C.To suggest the difficulty in removing smallpox.

D.To show his determination to carry on the drive.

3From the last paragraph we can infer that _______.

    A.Covid-19 will be conquered soon

B.world wars are worse than infections

C.Canadians benefit from the vaccine most

    D.smallpox is a terrifying disease

4What message does the text convey?

    A.Every dog has his day.

B.A good beginning is half the battle.

C.A trouble shared is a trouble halved.

D.Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was raining pretty hard on Halloween, but that wasn’t going to stop my little sister Kate and me from trick-or-treating. We decided to start at Miss Parson's house. Miss Parson was loved by us kids who lived nearby because she often shared her self-made cookies with us. We usually finished them in a second, especially when we were hungry after class. Sometimes, when we visited her or did something for her, she always gave us surprise.

Kate and I wondered what kinds of treats she'd offer. As we walked down the street, I held an umbrella, a bag for candy, and my sister's hand. Jack-o-Lantems gave soft light along the street. Spider webs hung in all the windows. Parents who were dressed up like monsters (怪物) stood in doorways. After we had walked a few blocks, we were wet from head to toes, and I felt Kate was trembling with cold.

There was a light on at Miss Parson's house, but there were no ghosts,小妖精), or Jack-o-Lantems. We climbed up the steps and saw Miss Parson through a window. She was drinking a cup of hot tea.

"Maybe she doesn't celebrate Halloween," Kate said with a sigh, disappointedly.

"Well, even if she doesn't, she usually likes it when we visit her," I said and knocked on the door.

Miss Parson seemed surprised when she opened it and saw our dressing. " Is today Halloween?" she asked. "I completely forgot. I am so sorry!"
