  • 21、Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

    Will Experimentation on Animals End?

One of the most debatable issues in science is the use of animals in research. Scientists experiment on animals for different reasons, including basic research to explore how organisms function, investigating potential treatments for human disease, and safety and quality control testing of drugs, devices and other products.

【1】However, opponents believe it is cruel and meaningless, as observations in animals often do not translate directly to humans.

In 1959, William Russell and Rex Burch proposed their “3Rs” guidelines for making the use of animals in scientific research more humane: restrict the use of animals; refine experiments to minimize distress; and replace tests with alternative techniques. 【2】 Around 29 million animals per year are currently used in experiments in the U.S. and Europeans Union countries. This is less than half the total in the mid-1970s —— a significant drop.

【3】Improvements in imaging methods that offer a look inside the bodies of animals allow scientists to get more and better data from each experiment than before.

For example, researchers previously had to do experiments with multiple mice at different stages of cancer development, but now they can watch the disease develop in a single living animal using a dye. Similarly, as brain-imaging techniques become more advanced, some questions that were addressed with experiments in monkeys before may be better answered by looking into the human brain now. “【4】” says Larry Carbone, a senior veterinarian(兽医) at the University of California in San Francisco.

A.Over the course of five decades their guidelines have become widely accepted worldwide.

B.The awareness of animal protection contributes to the decline of the number.

C.Human volunteers must be able to replace monkeys more and more in the next 10 to 20 years.

D.New experimental techniques help to push numbers down.

E.Its supporters point to the long list of medical advances made possible with the help of animal research.

F.The number of the animals used in research is still considerable.

  • 22、University of Colorado Boulder researchers have developed a new tool that could lead to more efficient and cheaper technologies for capturing (捕获) heat-trapping gases from the atmosphere and turning them into beneficial substances, like fuel or building materials, meanwhile limiting global warming and avoiding disastrous impacts of global climate change.

The tool predicts how strong the bond will be between carbon dioxide and the molecule (分子) that traps it. It allows researchers to identify suitable molecular candidates to capture carbon dioxide from everyday air.

The goal of carbon capture and storage technology is to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it safely for thousands of years. But while it has been in use in the USA since the 1970s, it currently captures and stores a mere 0.1% of global carbon emission (排放) annually. To help meet the goal of carbon emission laid out by the IPCC, carbon capture and storage would have to rapidly increase in scale by 2050.

Current industrial facilities around the world rely on capturing carbon dioxide from a concentrated source, such as emissions from power plants. While these methods can bind (凝结) a lot of carbon dioxide quickly and efficiently using large amounts of certain chemical binders, they are also extraordinarily energy- intensive. This method is also quite expensive at scale to take carbon dioxide and turn it into something else useful, such as carbonates, according to Luca, fellow-elect of the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute (RASEI). Using the tool would free carbon capture facilities from being tied to concentrated source, allowing them to exist almost anywhere.

Being able to easily estimate the strength of chemical bonds also enables researchers to identify which binders will be best suited and offer a cheaper alternative to the traditional method for capturing and converting carbon into materials or fuel according to Haley Petersen, co-lead author of the study.

【1】What can the new tool be used to do?

    A.Stop climate change.

    B.Capture oxygen from air.

    C.Help deal with climatic issues.

    D.Divide the molecule of carbon.

【2】What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.The atmosphere.

    B.The material from carbon.

    C.The goal of carbon emission.

D.The carbon capture and storage technology.

【3】What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about the traditional method?

    A.Its disadvantages.

    B.Its functions.

    C.Its working principle.

    D.Its practical application.

【4】In which section of a newspaper can the text be found?

    A.Art.

    B.Science.

    C.Fashion.

    D.Culture.

  • 23、Elephants are often seen comforting upset individual elephants with a gentle touch of their trunks reportedly. It’s one thing to witness something that looks like comforting behavior, but another thing to prove that this is what elephants are doing. Now, scientists have shown that Asian elephants do indeed get upset when they see others in trouble, and they reach out to comfort them. Elephants, thus, join the list of other animals, including dogs, wolves and some birds, which have been shown to do so.

Elephants’ responses to stress are difficult to explore because one has to wait for opportunities for these arising naturally in the wild. However, Joshua Plotnik, a scientist at Mahidol University in Thailand got around this problem. He compared Asian elephants’ behaviors during times of stress to those during periods when little upsets them. For 1 to 2 weeks every month for nearly a year, Plotnik spent 30 to 180 minutes daily watching and recording the behavior of 26 Asian elephants living in Elephant Natural Park in northern Thailand.

Other researchers have previously shown that when upset, an elephant moves its ears and raises its tail; it may also make a low sound to show its stress. “When elephants in the park see an elephant behaving in this manner, they typically respond by feeling the same emotion,” Plotnik said, “just as we do when watching a scary movie together. If an actor is frightened, our hearts race and we reach for each other’s hands — a reaction known as ‘emotional contagion’ .”

“But more studies are needed, preferably in wild populations,” Plotnik said. “What is unclear is whether these responses primarily benefit the upset animals, or the res-ponders,” Shermin de Silva, a behavioral ecologist, said. However, the study “provides a very interesting first exploration into the behavior of elephants suffering from stress,” said Graeme Shannon, a scientist at Colorado State University.

【1】What does the underlined phrase “got around” in paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Overcame.

    B.Faced.

    C.Found.

    D.Raised.

【2】Why did Plotnik mention the “watching a scary movie” situation?

    A.To explain a rule.

    B.To present a fact.

    C.To clarify a concept.

    D.To support a conclusion.

【3】What can be inferred about the study according to the last paragraph?

    A.It has some limitations.

    B.It confirms a prediction.

    C.It benefits future studies.

    D.It is thought worthless.

【4】Which can be the best title for the text?

    A.Elephants copy comforting behavior

B.Elephants ask for comfort when in trouble

C.Elephants are easily in low spirits

    D.Elephants understand their companions’ feelings

  • 24、   There are around 100 tribes(部落)that live in global isolation, mostly in South America and India. The Sentinelese have lived on one of the Andaman Islands in Eastern India for 60, 000 years. They protect their island by fighting against people from outside. Their language is different from any other known language. Another Andaman tribe is the Jarawa. In the past, they were independent and fought against anybody trying to make contact with them. But in 1998, the Indian government built a road across their land, and since then, they’ve had more contact with the outside world.

Some Amazon tribes avoid contact because of unhappy memories. The Mashco-Piro left their vegetable gardens after rubber companies killed most of their tribe at the beginning of the 20th century. Those who survived became nomadic(游牧的)and started hunting animals in the forest.

The Awa live in the Amazon forests ofBrazil. Out of 350 members, 100 have no contact with the outside world. They left their villages and adopted a nomadic lifestyle around 1850 to escape attacks by Europeans. In the following years, farmers in nearby communities started cutting the trees to expand their farmland. The Awa lost most of their hunting land. The few Amazon tribes that still exist are fighting to keep their traditional way of life.

Survival, an organization that fights for the rights of tribal people, says that uncontacted tribes are the most vulnerable(弱势的)humans on the planet and that’s why their environment should be unavailable to the rest of us. After years of pressure, the organization got Brazil’s government to clear non-natives from the Awa land. All non-Awa people are leaving so the tribe can get their forest back.

But some think it's impossible for tribes to stay isolated forever in a connected world. Contact will be made one day. So the question is:Whose choice should it be, ours or theirs?

【1】What can we learn about the Sentinelese from the first paragraph?

A.They resist contact from the outside world.

B.They speakthe same language as the Jarawa.

C.They are wild about fighting with other tribes.

D.They have got help from the Indian govemment.

【2】Why did the Awa choose a nomadic lifestyle?

    A.To protect their hunting land.

    B.To search for food sources.

    C.To avoid threats from Europeans.

D.To maintain their original way of life.

【3】Which of the following would Survival probably agree with?

A.The tribes should be left undisturbed.

B.The tribes should fight for more living space.

C.The cribes should live in harmony with nature.

D.The tribes should adapt to the connected world.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

A.The Nomadic Tribes in the World

    B.Seeking Survival of Tribes

    C.The Unavailable Tribal Environment

    D.Protecting the Tribal Forests
