二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Many people say that looking back is meaningless because it can neither change the past nor bring it back to life, but I disagree as I enjoy the sense of nostalgia (怀旧感), which can remind me of how life used to be when I was younger. Don't get me wrong, however. I'm not one of those who love to talk ad nauseam about "the good old days".

As we know, there are moments when the past springs into the present. It's often a smell that will remind me of a particular place or person. A perfume, the scent of a flower, baking bread, bonfires...they all create an instant picture. For me it is the smell of a freshly painted room. We moved so many times when I was younger and each time the first thing my parents would do is decorate our bedrooms. The windows would be kept open to get rid of the smell of the paint but it would always linger on (留存) for days. Even today it fills me with a sense of new beginnings.

Those memories are fleeting (飞逝). But when I visit the seaside resort where we used to spend many of our family holidays, I can replay entire days in my head. I can vividly remember the weather, the salty smell of the sea, our dogs playing in the water, an ice cream and that feeling of exhaustion after a day in the fresh air.

Although having many photos of those days, I rarely look at them as I prefer to allow my memory to create the pictures. Today we can so easily capture (捕捉) the present with phones and cameras, upload the images and share that moment with our friends online. But, for me, that somehow takes away the unique connection.

1The underlined part "ad nauseam" in Paragraph 1 may be replaced by .

    A.wisely B.endlessly

    C.simply D.honestly

2According to the writer, a freshly painted room represents .

A.a new start B.a new home

    C.another move D.another holiday

3Where is the passage most likely from?

    A.A magazine. B.A guidebook.

C.A book review. D.A science fiction.

4How does the writer feel about the past?

    A.Dull. B.Bitter.

    C.Unforgettable. D.Regretful.

  • 22、   Given a wide range of available entertainment options and the way we consume information, visits to the library may seem like an old-fashioned entertainment. But according to a new Gallup poll (民意调査),Americans took more trips to the library than to the movie theater in 2019. The poll surveyed 1,025 adults throughout the United States who were asked how many times they participated in nine different leisure (休闲)activities, including visiting a library, watching a movie, or attending a sporting event. Library visits came out on top as the favorite, with those surveyed visiting an average of 10.5 times annually. Movies were second with respondents heading to the cinema an average of 5.3 times throughout the year. The zoo came in the last place with only 0.9 visits.

Although it’s not the only determining factor, cost appears to play a part. Activities at the bottom of the list such as theme parks and zoos are typically expensive. Libraries are free, as are many of their available services like Wi-Fi, in addition to the endless amounts of books. A Pew Research Center study indicated that although most people visit libraries to check out reading materials, 29% of surveyed Americans over the age of 16 use libraries for computers, Internet and public Wi-Fi.

People between ages 30-49 were most likely to engage in leisure activities, according to the Gallup poll. This was perhaps because of “their relative youth combined with mid-life stability” Gallup’s Justin McCarthy told Smithsonian. McCarthy also notes that libraries are typically visited most often by adults from low-income households and less often by adults from high-income households. In this poll, the youngest age group—those who are 18 to 29 years old—visited the library the most. This could be because college students are in that group.

Regardless of the reasons why people visit libraries, they’re far from outdated. Libraries have stood the test of time, which is good news for book lovers, those needing to drop in for Internet use, or anyone just looking for some quiet time. If there was ever any doubt that libraries would simply fade away, research suggests that they’re not going anywhere anytime soon.

1Which activity ranks last according to the survey?

    A.Going to a library.

    B.Visiting the zoo.

    C.Attending a sporting event.

D.Watching a movie in the theater.

2What can be inferred from paragraph 2?

A.Age plays a key role in going to a library.

B.Teenagers go to libraries mainly for free Wi-Fi.

C.Theme parks and zoos are less favored among the young.

D.The majority of Americans visit libraries mainly for reading materials.

3Who visit libraries most according to McCarthy?

    A.Adults with high income.

    B.People between ages 30-49.

C.The young at the age of 18 to 29.

    D.Teenagers from low-income households.

4What can be the best title for the text?

A.Why people love reading more than ever

B.We love movies, but we love libraries more

C.Reading in libraries makes you a better person

D.Why more young people go to libraries for free Wi-Fi

  • 23、   In 1973, Mark Granovetter, a sociology professor at Stanford University, published a paper entitled The Strength of Weak Ties. It went on to become one of the most influential sociology papers of all time. Until then scholars had assumed that an individual’s well-being depended mainly on the quality of relationships with close friends and family. Granovetter showed that quantity matters, too. He categories a person’s social world as “strong ties” and “weak ties”. His central insight was that for new messages and ideas, weak ties are more important to us than strong ones. As Granovetter pointed out, the people whom we often talk to swim in the same pool of information as we do. We depend on acquaintances whom we see infrequently to bring us news of opportunities.

This was the idea behind the Pixar building, the design of which was made by Steve Jobs. The building has a large central hall through which all employees have to pass several times a day. Jobs wanted colleagues to run into each other, grab coffee and have a chat. He believed in the power of these seemingly random conversations to fire up creativity.

Encounters with weak ties can be good for our mental wellbeing, too. Gillian Sandstrom, a senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Essex, investigated the extent to which people get happiness from weak-tie relationships. She found that on days when a participant had a greater number of casual interactions with weak ties — say, a neighbour, a member of yoga class – they experienced more happiness and a greater sense of belonging.

For all these reasons, we should continue to try and find ways to cultivate weak-tie relationships. Sandstrom adds that we can also engage in more weak-tie-style interactions with our strong ties. The goal is to let others know you are thinking of them without asking for a  great deal of time, energy or attention.

【1】Why does Granovetter think weak ties are more important?

    A.They are smaller in number.

B.They form same circle of friends.

C.They are sources of new information .

D.They are related to close friends and family.

【2】Which of the following can be categorized as weak ties?

    A.Neighbors.

    B.Best friends.

    C.Parents.

    D.Husband or wife.

【3】What is the function of the central hall in Pixar building?

    A.It helps staff build friendship.

B.It allows staff to have a break.

C.It encourages staff to meet and chat.

D.It helps Jobs communicate with staff.

【4】What does Sandstrom want to convey in the last paragraph?

A.We can develop weak ties into strong ties.

B.We should spend more time with strong ties.

C.We should balance weak ties with strong ties.

D.We can apply casual interactions to strong ties.

  • 24、   John George, 60, remembers that he lived a wonderful life in the Detroit neighborhood where he grew up. “We knew all our neighbors.” George told Detroit's Metro Times. “On Christmas Eve, we'd all go to midnight Mass, and there'd be 300 people in our house at one o’clock to about five in the morning. The folks were just really good, hardworking people. ”

By the'80s, however, the old neighborhood changed. Due in part to economic downturns and drug abuse, well -kept homes had been abandoned and kindly neighbors had fled to the suburbs(郊区). But not George. Living in any city, it’s like being in a relationship, he told Reader’s Digest. Some days are better than others. But it was my home. And when I saw it becoming worse, I had two choices: I could leave, or I could stay and fight. I chose the latter.

When the abandoned home behind his turned into a worn-out place, the father of two grabbed some boards and nails and began boarding up the house. After two neighbors stopped to ask what he was doing, they decided to help, with great results.

That's how it all got started. In the 30 years since that first home rescue, an army of approximately 182,000 volunteers, along with private donors, has helped George pull down around 300 abandoned homes, mainly in die poorer Northwest area of Detroit. They've also secured 400 - some homes by boarding them up. They've painted and repaired nearly 900 homes and built over 100 from scratch. According to Forbes, more than 1,000 Detroiters have been housed as a result of their work.

And there's Halloween. In Detroit, October 30 was known as Devil's Night, a period when all hell break loose in the form of crime and vandalism (破坏公物). In response, George created a citizens' patrol(巡逻)that would take to the streets, keeping an eye on illegal behavior. He named it Angels' Night What began with 12 neighbors on patrol in 1990 has grown to more than 60,000 citywide.

George's inspired ideas have not gone unnoticed by the city he loves. Others are buying into it. There's a trend of younger homeowners coming in.

    A. Neighbors were nice and got along very well.

    A. More people moved into Detroit.

    B. Almost all Detroiters were housed.

    C. Over 100 homes were newly built.

    D. There was no illegal behavior any more.
