二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Before the age of the smartphone, photographers had to learn how to use high-tech cameras and photographic techniques. Today, with the huge range of camera apps on our smartphones, we’re all good amateur photographers, since the quality of smartphone images now nearly equals that of digital cameras.

The new ease of photography has given us a tremendous appetite for capturing the magical and the ordinary. We are obsessed with documenting everyday moments, whether it’s a shot of our breakfast, our cat or the cat’s breakfast. Even photo journalists are experimenting with mobile phones because their near invisibility makes it easier to capture unguarded moments.

In the past, magazines published unforgettable photos of important people and global events that captured our imaginations. These photos had the power to change public opinion and even the course of history. But if there are fewer memorable images today, it’s not because there are fewer good images. It’s because there are so many, and no one image gets to be special for long.

As people everywhere embrace photography and the media make use of citizen journalists, professional standards appear to be shifting. Before digital images, most people trusted photographs to accurately reflect reality. Today, images can be altered in ways the naked eye might never notice. Photojournalists are trained to accurately represent what they witness. Yet any image can be altered to create an “improved” picture of reality. The average viewer is left with no way to assess the accuracy of an image except through trust in a news organization or photographer.

The question of the accuracy of images gets even trickier when photojournalists start experimenting with camera apps-- like Hipstamatic or Instagram --- which encourage the use of filters (滤镜). Images can be colored, brightened, faded, and scratched to make photographs more artistic, or to give them an antique look. Photographers using camera apps to cover wars and conflicts have created powerful images--- but also controversy. Critics worry that antique-looking photographs romanticize war, while distancing us from those who fight in them.

Yet photography has always been more subjective than we assume. Each picture is a result of a series of decisions-- where to stand, what lens to use, what to leave in and what to leave out of the frame. Does altering photographs with camera app filters make them less true? There’s something powerful and exciting about the experiment the digital age has forced upon us. These new tools make it easier to tell our own stories--- and they give others the power to do the same. Many members of the media get stuck on the same stories, focusing on elections, governments, wars, and disasters, and in the process, miss out on the less dramatic images of daily life that can be as revealing.

Who knows? Our obsession with documentation and constantly being connected could lead to a dramatic change in our way of being. Perhaps we are witnessing the development of a universal visual language, one that could change the way we relate to each other and the world. Of course, as with any language, there will be those who produce poetry and those who make shopping lists.

1According to the author, there are fewer memorable photographs today because_________.

A.the quality of many images is still poor

B.there are so many good images these days

C.traditional media refuse to allow amateur photos

D.most images are not appealing to a global audience

2The author put the word “ improved” in quotation marks in order to _________.

A.indicate it’s a word cited from another source

B.stress that the picture of reality is greatly improved

C.draw audience attention to a word worth considering

D.show it’s arguable whether the picture is truly improved

3Which of the statements does the author most likely agree with?

A.The daily life pictures are very expressive themselves.

B.Photographs of the digital age are more subjective than before.

C.Photos altered by filters of camera apps are too subjective to be true.

D.Many members of the media value daily life images over major social events.

4What may be the best title for the passage?

    A.Camera Apps Bury Authenticity

    B.Photography Redefined: A Visual Language

    C.Smartphone: Killer of Professional Photography

D.The Shifting Standards of Professional Photography

  • 22、   Schools are under constant pressure to make budget cuts, and music programs are often first on the chopping block. However, a recent study from the University of British Columbia in Canada has shown that students who took music lessons in high school performed better in subjects such as English, science, and math.

The researchers collected data from over 100,000 students at public high schools across the province of British Columbia. Some of them took music lessons during high school while others never attended them. Checking the test scores of students who took music classes with those of their peers, the study found that the musicians got higher grades in a range of different school subjects.

Research like this has been done before, but as for the number of respondents, this study is much larger, and it took into account other factors that may have affected the results. For example, perhaps students who took music classes were encouraged to do so because they already had good grades. This UBC study rules out a number of other factors that could explain why music students performed better academically, and the researchers still find a clear effect of music lessons on academic performance.

Not only did music students perform better than non-musicians, but students who played an instrument did even better than those who sang. “Learning to play a musical instrument and playing in an ensemble(乐团) is very rewarding,” says Martin Guhn, one of the researchers, “A student can learn to read music notes, achieve eye-hand-mind coordination, develop keen listening skills and establish interpersonal relationships.”

What this study doesn't tell us, though, is why music makes these students perform better academically, but the research paper mentions a few possible explanations. Music practice is linked with neurological(神经系统的) changes that improves certain brain functions, affecting memory and planning skills. Besides, there is a possible motivational factor. Students who take music lessons see a tangible result from practice—they get better—and they might apply that to their other work. And the non-competitive team aspect of making music together could strengthen students' social development, which would also help them in other alias.

1How did the researchers find the result of the research?

A.By conducting tests. B.By analyzing causes.

C.By making comparisons. D.By building models.

2How is the recent study different from previous ones?

    A.It covered more school subjects.

B.It allowed for students who sang.

    C.It was carried out nationwide.

D.It produced a more convincing result.

3Why did the author mention Martin Guhn's words in Paragraph 4?

A.To speak highly of music students.

B.To explain why music helps students perform better.

C.To present the benefits of playing instruments.

D.To encourage students to join an ensemble.

4What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.Music practice can make an overall improvement in students’ brain.

B.Progress made in music may motivate students to work harder in math.

C.Singing can't make any difference in improving students' memory.

D.Playing in an orchestra could make students less competitive in other fields.

  • 23、   Nowadays six Amazon Scout delivery robots rolled out in a pilot program in Snohomish County, Wash. The robots carry meals, groceries and packages to homes and offices in this region just north of Seattle. They have appeared on the sidewalks of London, Beijing and other cities and communities worldwide. These machines must overcome pedestrian legs, naughty dogs and  broken pavement, which raises some questions.

These services are gaining attraction as a growing number of city residents expect immediate or scheduled delivery for just about everything. Between 2017 and 2018 online retail sales in the U.S. increased by 16 percent. On the final step of all these deliveries, called the last mile, humans on bicycles, motorized scooters ( 电动车) or large delivery trucks typically deliver packages. All the vehicles compete for space on busy urban streets. “Deliveries are trending upwards in all crowded city centers, and if city and state leaders don’t start thinking about creative solutions like robot deliveries, we can expect even worse traffic jams,” says Paul Mackie, director of a transportation policy research center in Arlington.

A study by this center found 73 percent of delivery vehicles in Arlington were parked outside of authorized areas, often blocking bike lanes and crosswalks. By moving the last step of  deliveries from the road to the sidewalk, cities could reduce traffic jams and solve the parking problem entirely, Mackie says.

Companies such as Amazon are not developing this delivery technology simply to clear up urban traffic. Self-driving vehicles and sidewalk robots could cut down last-mile delivery costs in cities by as much as 40 percent, according to a 2018 report by a consultancy firm. A delivery robot can cost thousands of dollars to manufacture, and most currently require human management and conservation. But in the long run companies that use autonomous delivery vehicles in the next several years could end up saving billions of dollars, the report stated.

1Why does Amazon introduce delivery robots ?

    A. To amuse its customers.

    B. To avoid pedestrians, dogs and broken pavement.

    C. To meet the increasing demand of delivering packages.

    D. To confirm the company’s innovation spirit.

2What does Paul Mackie mean by his words in paragraph 2?

    A. Retail sales in the U.S. increased fast.

    B. Deliveries stay steady in all crowded city centers.

    C. Regardless of robot deliveries, traffic jams will remain the same.

    D. Robot can help ease the traffic pressure.

3What can robots delivery bring to the city?

    A. Block bike lanes and crosswalks.

    B. Relieve urban traffic as well as save delivery costs.

    C. Increase danger to pedestrians.

    D. Lead to traffic traffic jams.

4Which word can best describe the future of the robot delivery?

    A. Uncertain. B. Hopeless. C. Promising. D. Unacceptable.

  • 24、   The spot of red was what first caught Randy Heiss’s attention on December 16, 2018. He walked toward it and found a balloon attached to a piece of paper. “Dayami,” it read on one side, in a child’s writing. Heiss flipped the paper over. It was a numbered list in Spanish. His Spanish isn’t very good, but he could see it was a Christmas list.

He was charmed and wondered whether he could find the child. About 20 miles to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales, Mexico. Based on the prevailing wind, he was pretty sure that’s where it came from.

Back home, Heiss’s wife who is fluent in Spanish translated the list. Dayami, probably a girl, had asked for a doll, a dollhouse, clothes and art supplies.

Heiss then posted about his quest on Facebook, attaching photos, hoping someone might know the girl’s family.

A few days passed with no leads; Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, he decided to send a private Facebook message to Radio XENY based in Nogales. The next morning, Heiss awoke to a message: The staff had located Dayami, who indeed lived in Nogales and would be willing to arrange a get-together at the radio station.

Heiss and his wife rushed to buy everything on Dayami’s list. Then they drove for 45 minutes, crossing the border into Nogales. They finally met the very excited girl. “Her eyes were wide open with wonder. Like, ‘Oh my gosh, this really did work!’ It was a beautiful experience,” Heiss said. “Quite healing for us.”

Heiss, 61, has lived in Bisbee, Arizona for more than three decades. Ten years ago, he and his wife lost their only child. They have no grandchildren. Now they split their time between Nogales and Bisbee.

“Being around children at Christmastime has been absent in our lives,” Heiss said. “It’s been kind of a gaping hole in our Christmas experience.” He has since reflected on what a miracle it was that he spotted the balloon at all, let alone that he was able to locate Dayami and her family.

    1On December 16, Heiss ________.

    A.planned to go to Nogales

B.found a wish list by accident

    C.spotted a card attached to a balloon

D.read a story about Dayami on Facebook

2What did Heiss do to find Dayami?

A.He asked his wife for advice.

    B.He posted Dayami’s photo online.

C.He drove to Nogales to find clues.

D.He turned to Radio XENY for help.

3What do we learn about Heiss?

A.He has lived alone for many years.

B.He is not good at learning languages.

C.He has built a close bond with Dayami.

D.He buys Dayami gifts every Christmas.

4What does the story intend to tell us?

    A.Giving is rewarding.

B.All for one, one for all.

    C.Actions speak louder than words.

D.Treat others as you hope they will treat you.
