21、Imagine a world where everything has their own virtual, real-time computerized replica (替身)—a digital double. That concept is known as the digital twin and it could provide a way to improve our lives in the real world. More than just imitation, digital twins take information from Internet-connected objects through Internet of Things (IoT) devices, use data almost instantly to see the effects of changing conditions and then make adjustments rapidly.
In construction, the digital twin means buildings become safer and cheaper to build because digital twins have access to real weather, structural and stress point data. Bridges like the Queensferry Crossing in Scotland, for example, use measurements of water level and wind speed to improve safety and manage traffic flow. Connected buildings then make smart cities, where buildings talk to one another and future function can be predicted. In Australia’s state of Victoria, local government is building a digital twin of the entire state.
Manufacturing is another sector being affected by digital twin technology. Placing thousands of sensors throughout the production line allows comp anies to see how work is performed at each step of the process, system efficiency and any bottlenecks.
Likewise, in healthcare, the digital twin concept means creating computer models of disease or even a virtual human body. Personalized medicines or treatments could then be developed using a medical twin of each patient. And even health problems could be cut out before they begin.
“I think maintaining a persistent set of computerized models that are constantly being updated and evolved alongside physical equivalents is really the essence of digital twins,” said Michael Kapteyn, a leading researcher studying digital twin computer models. In the foreseeable future, digital twins may eventually become an essential part of our everyday lives by enabling individuals without previous technical knowledge to finally get simple answers to complex questions.

Flying
Ever since I was old enough to dream, I have imagined myself soaring with the eagles. My love of flying has shaped the way I live and the person I have become. Two years ago, that passion rocketed to new heights when I had the opportunity to visit Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in
Arizona. For a whole week I lived in a college dorm, roomed with a total stranger and---best of
all---I flew!
My group took part in activities ranging from learning about the history of aviation (航空) to
flying in state-of-the-art pilot training simulators (模拟装置). At least once a day, I devoted myself
to learning one of the world’s best training aircrafts, the Cessna 182. Not only did I receive thorough
ground instruction, but I also got to fly. In total, I flew five hours to receive my private pilot’s license.
In that one joyous and oh-so-short week, my passion for aviation grew even stronger. Now, whenever I see a plane flying overhead, I feel a sense of pride thinking I’ve done that.
During my time in and above the Arizona desert, I learned not only about the mechanics and
techniques of aviation, but also about myself and how I see the world. As I floated in that seemingly
endless sea of air, I became aware of the variety and complexity of the humanity below. On the
ribbons of roadways, each tiny car carried people with hopes and dreams. I wondered if any of those
people had ever wished to fly like an eagle. Then I realized that each must have his or her own
dreams and ambitions. That’s what makes us unique. We try to respond to something special inside
us. I also realized that I was especially fortunate to be making my own dream come true.
Everywhere I go, I hear, “Do what makes you happy and you will be happy.” It sounds like
standard advice, but I’ve really thought about it and taken it to heart. I couldn’t care less about how
much money I make or what benefits I receive. I know that I am already in hot pursuit(追逐) of my
dreams. And, even if they change, even if they finally don’t involve aviation, I’ll always aim to fly
with the eagles.

23、 There are as many different types of sleeper as there are animal varieties on the planet. There are dozers, dreamers, nappers and hardcore dead-to-the-worlders.
Dolphins
Dolphins face a bit of a problem as they spend their whole lives in the water, but as mammals they need to breathe oxygen to survive. How do they juggle this when unconscious? Dolphins shut down half of their brain, which rests, while the other half is alert and looking out for any potential dangers. As they do this, the dolphin will lie on the surface of the water in a behaviour known as “logging”.
Elephants
Elephants tend to nod off for a few minutes at a time throughout the day. Elephants only manage about two hours of sleep per day, and that’s not even a concentrated block of shuteye. They tend to nod off for a few minutes at a time throughout the day. Possibly because of this, most of their sleeping is done standing up, with just the occasional recumbent sleep.
Spiders
Of course spiders have to be awkward. Even though animals sleep in a vast array of different ways, all of them, even bacteria, follow a 24 hour cycle, known as a circadian rhythm that is dictated by the rotation of the Earth. But scientists have discovered that certain types of orb-weaving spiders simply don’t bother with this. Their body clocks follow a 17, 18 or 19 hour cycle. Scientists aren’t exactly sure how the spider can even exist with this completely different body clock.
Koalas
One problem with trying to work out a creature’s sleeping habits is the difficulty of identifying what is actual sleep. It’s easier to study captive animals, but they can behave in a completely different manner to their cousins in the wild. Koalas studied in zoos were thought to sleep for up to 22 hours a day, but a more detailed study, looking at animals in the wild too, revealed that they in fact sleep for around 14 hours a day plus a healthy amount of resting on top of that. Their diet of eucalyptus leaves takes a lot of time and energy to digest.
Frogs
Frogs are incredible. They have managed to master practically every environment on the planet, no matter how hot or how cold. They not only use hibernation in winter as a sleep strategy, they also engage in something called estivation, where they reach a dormant state during the summer months to avoid overly hot or dry conditions. Despite all this knowledge, scientists aren’t sure exactly how frogs sleep during the months when they are active.
【1】Which animal sleeps the longest hours a day according to the passage?
A.The dolphin.
B.The koala.
C.The spider.
D.The elephant.
【2】What is still confusing to scientists?
A.How they can identify what is actual sleep.
B.How dolphins breathe oxygen when sleeping.
C.How spiders can survive a different body clock.
D.How frogs sleep when they are not hibernating or estivating.
【3】What is the passage mainly about?
A.Why animals sleep differently.
B.What animals do while sleeping.
C.The extraordinary ways that animals sleep.
D.The mystery about different types of sleeper.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Brent’s Hill was without doubt the best sledding(滑雪橇) hill imaginable—incredibly high at the top, a long, and steep(陡峭的) run in the middle and a flat stretch at the bottom. Today the conditions were perfect for sledding. We had watched all day from the windows of our classrooms, looking forward to carrying out our plan.
The thought of our plans was almost too much. I couldn’t keep my mind on my studies at all. The orange tabletop consumed my thoughts. It was ready to go!
It was an idea that hit us just yesterday. We had been playing hide-and-seek when we noticed the round tabletop leaning against the wall of our house. The rest of the table had long since disappeared. No one knew why my dad had kept the top. It was about four feet across, weighed an unbelievable number of pounds, and more importantly, it was bright orange. My father had sprayed it the previous summer with orange paint in the hope of preserving it for one more year. Who came up with the idea of using the tabletop as a sled? I can’t remember, but we all knew it was brilliant.
History would be made. I could see it now. We would fly down the hill, easily passing everyone else. Whether we would take the safer route to the left, or the narrower, more challenging one to the right was the decision we thought of. There were, of course, advantages and disadvantages to both. “Billy, you’re daydreaming again,” blamed Mr. Kenniger. “You are never going to get through Grade Six if you continue like this.”
I put my head back down and pretended to be studying. I could not afford to be left behind at school! Eventually it was 3:30 and the class was dismissed. I was free! The plan was set. We would race home and meet in my backyard to get the tabletop.
The tabletop was too heavy to carry, so big Tom, Mary and I took turns rolling it to our destination——Brent’s hill.
