二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Around the world, rivers seem to be raging. While catastrophic flooding of Pakistan’s rivers has left tens of millions without homes, a drought unseen for 500 years has squeezed Europe’s major waterways almost dry. There is little disagreement about what’s going on: climate change is causing both rainfall and droughts to intensify. The question now is how to manage those climate-changed waterways and, specifically, what role dams should play in fighting against the kinds of disasters.

Advocates say water storage dams will become more essential to mitigate extreme water flows by absorbing water during flooding and releasing it in times of drought. Dams, they say, can help combat climate change by producing renewable hydropower (水力发电) that is cleaner than fossil fuel energy.

However, criticisms have long centered on the negative impact most dams have on biodiversity and river ecosystems. Not only do the vast amounts of concrete used to build large dams leave huge carbon footprints, there is also much evidence that greenhouse gas emissions from dams are often far greater than previously thought. Increasingly a scientific case is also being made that dams actually worsen both floods and droughts.

Now, more dam developers are turning to “run-of-river” technology, in which the river’s water flows continuously through a hydropower station without a reservoir (水库) to store it. Such projects are generally considered more environmentally friendly, but they do not allow for water to be managed according to weather conditions.

Then there are those who say we should stay away from dams, and look for ways using nature-based solutions. Many ecologists say that protecting wetlands, for example, should be a priority, since those ecosystems act as natural (海绵) for floodwaters within a river basin. “We have turned river basins into economic machines that only serve people and not nature, and this creates more problems, like droughts and flooding.” says Herman Wanningen, the founder of the advocacy group Dam Removal Europe. “We have to learn to cooperate with nature and not against it anymore.”

  • 23、China: Making Graduates Employable

Universities in China are facing similar demands to improve the employability of their graduates as those in the UK, new research among employers has revealed. 【1】 In Britain, the government has set up its own internship scheme to help graduates find work during the recession.

But what are the skills employers want and how much do they differ between the two nations? 【2】 The partnerships are funded by the government through the British Council under the second phase of the Prime Minister’s Initiative for International Education. In this scheme, universities are encouraged to exchange ideas and develop programmes aimed at improving the entrepreneurship and employability of graduates. “We found employers in both countries put a great emphasis on leadership qualities and initiative – things that are learned through the activities students engage in and the responsibilities they take on during their time at university,” Heffernan told a conference in London organized by the council, which is inviting proposals for 10 new UK-China partnerships.

    【3】

Generally, it includes family and friends and links with people working in other companies, voluntary organizations, or leisure activities. The Chinese also tend to take more time building up relationships with people before getting down to business. The University of Plymouth and its partner China Agricultural University in Beijing are working to determine the skills most likely to lead to employability and successful careers. Staff at both universities have conducted face-to-face and telephone interviews with local employers of graduates in three areas, marketing, human resources and finance-accounting.

【4】 In the UK they chose communication including written and verbal communication, networking skills and foreign language ability - as the top priority followed by the ability to work in a team.

“Students in China generally lose touch with society and they need help to understand how companies work and what is involved in the different jobs and professions. They know very little outside the campus and that is where I think they differ from students in the UK. We can share our experiences.”

A.“However, there are some clear differences in the emphasis put on different attributes, such as the value placed by the Chinese on ‘guanxi’, the network of connections that a person has built up.” he said.

B.Employers in both countries valued the personal skills of graduates seeking work in human resources.

C.The Chinese employers said the person who could complete a job and get things done was highly prized

D.That is the question Dr. Troy Heffernan, a senior lecturer in marketing at the University of Plymouth, set out to answer through his involvement in one of 13 partnerships between institutions in the UK and China.

E.A draft of a report to be published later this year shows marketing executives in both countries put a high emphasis on good communication skills.

F.The Chinese government issued a circular earlier this year urging universities and colleges to strengthen their efforts in preparing students for the workplace.

  • 24、Dogs see the world through their noses. Their special ability to recognize specific scents helps them find bombs, guns, drugs and human remains. Man’s best friend may also be his best health ally. There are reports about dogs trained to sniff out cancer, diabetic conditions and other health problems. According to a new study, dogs can do something just as remarkable: sniff out stress in people.

While previous studies have suggested dogs might pick up on human emotions possibly through smell, questions remained over whether they could detect stress and if this could be done through smell. “This study has definitely proven that when people have a stress response, their odor profile changes.” said Clara Wilson, a PhD student and first author of the research. Wilson added the findings could prove useful when training service dogs that support people with emotional damage.

Wilson and her colleagues were able to train four dogs to indicate the container holding a particular breath and sweat sample, even when the line-up included unused gauze, samples from another person, or samples from the same person taken at a different time of day.

Then the team turned to samples collected from 36 people, who were asked to count backwards from 9,000 in units of 17. The participants reported feeling stressed by the task and for the 27 who carried it out in the laboratory, their blood pressure and heart rate rose. The dogs were taught to pick out samples taken just after the task from two containers holding unused gauze.

The researchers then included not only unused gauze but samples taken from the same participant just before the task, when they were more relaxed. Each set of samples was shown to a single dog in 20 trials. The results reveal that the dogs chose the “stressed” sample in 675 out of the 720 trials.

The team say while it was unclear what chemicals the dogs were picking up on, the study shows humans produce a different odor when stressed.

【1】What has the new study found about dogs?

A.They can detect stress in people.

    B.They can influence our emotions.

    C.They can discover potential dangers.

D.They can sniff out diseases like cancer.

【2】Why were the participants asked to count down numbers?

    A.To help them better focus.

    B.To crcate a tense situation.

C.To test their ability to count.

    D.To monitor their blood pressure.

【3】Which of the following can be inferred from the text?

A.Stressed samples are more difficult to identify.

B.Dogs can easily recognize their owners’ smells.

C.Humans produce a different odor under pressure.
