The City Bike program rolled into New York last spring and proved a hit, with nearly 12,000 New Yorkers signing up for annual memberships. Since 2010, over a dozen US cities have introduced bike-share programs.
There’re plenty of bike stations near parks and other car-free areas. The programs we looked at in major cities work the same way. You buy a 24-hour pass. During the time, you get an unlimited number of 30-minute rides. If you go over your given half-hour ride time, you start paying fees for each following 30-minute period. Here are some of the biggest bike-share program in America.

22、 Yesterday, I went to the bookstore to pick up a present for my mother’s upcoming birthday. I found one of the books I wanted, but not the other one my mother had discussed with me the other day. When I went to pay. I asked the clerk behind the counter if I could order the second book.
A lady was standing in line behind me at the checkout. The clerk said she could order the book. but asked if I would mind letting the lady behind me pay for her purchases first. The lady behind me said no and that it was fine to wait.
It took nearly 15 minutes to put my order through! The lady behind me chatted agreeably with us for the entire time. When it finally came time for me to pay, I placed two $10 off cards on the counter. The clerk informed me the offer was only valid(有效) for the book I was purchasing in-store and wouldn’t work for the book I’d ordered. This meant that I’d have one $ 10 card left.
“You can come back and purchase another book.” the clerk smiled. “The offer is valid until the end of the week.”
I thought about this for a millisecond and then turned around to face the lady behind me who’d been so patient, kind, and charming through the very long wait at the checkout. “Here.” I gave her the $10 off card. She was very surprised and said. “Really?”
The gift didn’t cost me anything. I knew I wouldn’t be back before the end of the week and it rewarded someone whose attitude left a smile in my heart. Most definitely a win-win moment.

23、After ruling the tennis world for almost five years,Roger Federer is adjusting to life at NO.2.But,like any king whose throne has been taken away, the Swiss star is already planning secretly bis return to power, beginning at this week's US Open.
The problem is,many experts think he will never do it.They blame everything from age and tough competition to his racket and psychology.
For years Federer, had enjoyed the view from the top.Competitors saw him as undefeated, and for the most part he was. However, before the 2008 season began,Federer had an illness that stole his strength and clearly affected his play on the court.Ever since,he has struggled to return to form, winning just two of his last 14 tournaments.
"Twenty-seven is an age when your body starts talking back to you."tennis great John McEnroe told the New York Times.
Pancho Sefura, another tennis great, noted that Federer is also facing a maturing crop of young talents."There are too many great players now,"he said, naming Britain's Andy Murray,21,and Latvia's Ernests Gulbis,20.
US magazine Sports Illustrated tennis columnist Jon Wertheim suggested that part of Federer's problem could be his insistence on using a small racket. He says that the smaller head demands ball control. But we see time and again that racket makers try to get players to use a certain stick-one they would like to market to consumers and it has a negative effect on the professional game.
Sports psychologist Jim Loehr told the Times that Federer is probably feeling "a sense of doubt"after being considered as undefeated for so long.If Federer is to recover his state of being undefeated,Loehr said he must overcome his doubt."Federer doesn't need fame and money. But he has to get better. He has to go t.o a whole new level. That's the only way he stays in the game,"he said.
As for beginning his first Grand Slam in ages as the NO.2 seed,Federer said it might be for the best."Five years almost,I was expected to win every tournament I entered,"he said,"so maybe Rafael Nadal now feels what I had to feel for a very long time.It will be interesting to see how he handles it."

24、 Last year, Google unveiled Duplex, its artificial-intelligence-powered assistant. The machine assistant never identified itself as a bot in the demo. And Google got a lot of criticism for that. 【1】.”
But there lies a dilemma, because a new study in the journal Nature Machine Intelligence suggests that a bot is most effective when it hides its machine identity.
Talal Rahwan is a computational social scientists at New York University's campus in Abu Dhabi. His team recruited nearly 700 online volunteers to play the prisoner's dilemma - a classic game of negotiation, trust and deception - against either humans or bots. Half the time, the human players were told the truth about who they were matched up against. The other half, they were told they were playing a bot when they were actually playing a human or that they were battling a human when, in fact, it was only a bot.
And the scientists found that bots actually did remarkably well in this game of negotiation – if they impersonated humans.
“【2】, it outperforms humans themselves. It's more persuasive; it's able to induce cooperation and persuade the other opponent to cooperate more than humans themselves.” Says Rahwan
But whenever the bots' true nature was disclosed, their superiority vanished. And Rahwan says that points to a fundamental puzzle. 【3】 -- that perform tasks even better than we can - but their efficiency may be linked to their ability to hide their identity - which you know, feels ethically problematic.
“Those very humans who will be deceived by the machine, they are the ones who ultimately have to make that choice. Otherwise it would violate fundamental values of autonomy, respect and dignity for humans.” says Rahwan.
It's not realistic to ask people for consent before every bot-human interaction. 【4】. So we, as a society, will have to figure out if making our lives a bit easier is worth interacting with bots that pretend to be human.
A.We can now build really efficient bots
B.That is, if it is allowed to pose as human.
C.When the machine is reported to be human
D.We know the path ahead needs to be navigated carefully and deliberately,
E.That would, of course, reveal the bots' true identity.
F.They later clarified that they would only launch the tech with disclosure built in.
25、 When I re-entered the full-time workforce a few years ago after a decade of lonely self-employment, there was one thing I was looking forward to the most: the opportunity to have work friends once again. It wasn't until I entered the corporate world that I realized, for me at least, being friends with colleagues didn't emerge as a(n) _______ at all. This is surprising when you consider the prevailing emphasis by scholars and trainers and managers on the importance of cultivating close _______ relationships at work. So much research has explored the way in which collegial(同事的)ties can help overcome a range of workplace issues _______ productivity and the quality of work output such as team-based conflict, jealousy, undermining anger, and more.
Perhaps my expectations of lunches, water-cooler gossip and caring, deep-and-meaningful conversations were a _______ of the last time I was in that kind of office environment. Whereas now, as I near the end of my fourth decade, I realize work can be fully functional and entirely fulfilling without _______ to be best mates with the people sitting next to you.
In an academic analysis just published in the profoundly-respected Journal of Management, researchers have looked at the concept of "indifferent relationships", a simple term that summarizes the fact that relationships at work can _______ be non-interpersonal, inconsequential, unimportant and even, dare I say it, disposable or substitutable.
Indifferent relationships are neither positive nor negative. The limited research conducted thus far indicates they're especially _______ among those who value independence over cooperation, and harmony over confrontation. Indifference is also the _______ option among those who are socially lazy. Maintaining relationships over the long term takes effort, which, for some of us, is much too _______.
As noted above, indifferent relationships may not always be the most ________ approach in resolving some of the issues that pop up at work. But there are nevertheless several apparently proven benefits. One of those is ________. Less time chatting and socializing means more time working and churning(产出).
The other is ________. As human beings, we're programmed to compare ourselves to each other in what is an anxiety-causing phenomenon. Apparently, we look down on acquaintances(泛泛之交)more so than friends. Since the former is very common among those ________ to indifferent relationships, their predominance can promote individuals' sense of self-worth.
Ego aside, a third advantage is that the emotional ________ of indifferent relationships has been found to enhance critical evaluation, to strengthen one's focus on task resolution, and to gain greater access to valuable information. None of that might be as ________ as after-work socializing but, hey, I'll take it anyway.
