二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Our clothes do a lot for us. They keep us warm in the winter or cool while we’re working out. They let us dress to impress or comfortably veg out on the couch with the TV on. But some researchers think our clothes could be doing even more. Those scientists and engineers are dreaming up new ways to make clothes safer, more comfortable or just more convenient.

Some ideas for new clothes aim to protect people from harm. One new shoe design, for example, features pop-out spikes (鞋钉) on the sole that grip the ground. This could help people keep their footing on slippery or uneven ground. A new fabric coating, meanwhile, could absorb and neutralize (中和) some chemical weapons. That coating is made from a metal-organic framework that breaks down harmful compounds. It could offer protection to people in war-torn countries.

Not all advanced clothing is designed to save lives. Some could just make clothes more comfortable. One day, for instance, you may not need to layer up to stay warm. Fabric filled with nanowires could reflect your body heat back onto your skin. Electric current humming through those metal threads could provide warmth, too. This maybe especially useful for hikers, soldiers or others working in super cold conditions.

Some researchers have dream up wholly new uses for clothing —like turning wearers into walking power outlets. Flexible solar panels sewn into fabric could absorb the sun to recharge phones or other devices on the go. Another team threaded fabric with magnetized (磁化的) copper and silver to write data into fabrics. Such data-packed fabric could be used as a hands-free key or form of ID.

Many of these ideas have not yet left the lab—and they’re still pretty far from hitting retail (零售) shelves. But inventors hope these and other innovations could someday let you get more from your clothes.

【1】What do the underlined words “veg out” in paragraph 1 probably mean?

    A.Relax.

    B.Stand out.

    C.Work.

    D.Dream about.

【2】Why do the new shoes feature pop-out spikes on the sole?

    A.To make them comfortable.

    B.To make them fashionable.

    C.To prevent people from slipping.

D.To turn wearers into walking power outlets.

【3】What kind of clothes are suitable for hikers?

    A.Coats filled with nanowires.

B.Shoes with pop-out spikes on the sole.

C.Clothes with a new fabric coating.

    D.Clothes made of data-packed fabric.

【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Many of these ideas are not realistic.

B.Many smart clothes are too expensive to afford.

C.People will benefit more from their clothes in future.

D.Many comfortable clothes will come to the market soon.

  • 22、   Some people may think that students who study abroad have more time for relaxation and less homework. But as a matter of fact, Grade 12 students in Canada are just as busy and pressured as students in China. In Canada, students have to pay equal attention to all the tests and assignments, as every little evaluation will directly affect their final grades.

To ease some of the stress from the important courses, like mathematics and English, students will often choose one or two fun courses in the last year of high school. Those classes can give students a fairly excellent final grade.

Take me as an example-the classes I am attending this semester include advanced functions, graphic design and history. All of them are really important to me, which means I have to pay more attention to them.

In order to get enough elective credits to grade, I chose a relatively easy course, nutrition and health. This course is aimed at helping students develop a healthy lifestyle and diet. The biggest highlight of this course is that students can experience cooking and baking, which I believe is the reason why there 're a large number of students on the waiting list Usually, there are one or two food labs every month. Teachers always let students decide what they want to cook or bake. Students are divided into four groups with six people, and teachers are given the recipe beforehand.

After attending this class for more than three months, I believe it's not as easy as others think it is because it's an interdisciplinary(跨学科) course that requires  basic knowledge of science, humanity and even culinary.

Despite these kinds of courses not being as demanding as others, we can still learn a lot from them. Some people might think they're “mark-boosting(促进分数的)” courses that don't need to be taken seriously. But I consider them to be a unique way to ease the tension or other schoolwork.

1Why do Grade 12 students in Canada take fun elective courses?

A.To pass the free time. B.To put theory into practice.

C.To adopt a healthy lifestyle. D.To get relief from schoolwork.

2It can be learned from paragraph 4 that Canadian elective classes are ____.

A.easy but boring B.diverse but stressful

C.practical and beneficial D.interesting and inspiring

3Which of the following might be the best title for the text?

A.School Life in Canada B.Canada's Elective Classes

C.Educational System in Canada D.Tips for Choosing Elective Classes

  • 23、Flamingos (火烈鸟) make long friendships

When it comes to making friends, humans often seek people with similar interests and personalities. 【1】. The long-legged birds can form friendships that last for years, and they depend on their friends for support when they fall out with rivals.

Scientist Dr Paul Rose had already spotted that flamingos seemed to form narrow exclusive circles. 【2】. To find out why flamingos befriend some but not others, they studied both Chilean and Caribbean flamingos living in a nature reserve in Gloucestershire, England.

Each bird wore a ring around one leg with a unique code to tell them apart. McCully spent months studying their behaviour and built a personality profile for each flamingo. She found that confident, aggressive flamingos walked proudly around in their friendship groups, while the quieter birds carefully avoid those individuals. 【3】.

McCully and Rose found that for the Caribbean birds, personality seemed to matter more in friendships than it did for Chilean flamingos. Caribbean birds were more likely to defend their friends and the confident ones had much larger social groups than the quieter birds. The researchers found this surprising because in many ways, including body shape and how they search for food in the wild, the two species are very similar.

【4】. In that case, all personality types are represented and each flamingo has the chance to find a like-minded friend. McCully and Rose said, “If humans require friendships to be happy, is it really such a great leap to think that flamingos might need the same?”

A.Their long-lasting relationships are important for survival in the wild.

B.He teamed up with Fiona McCully, a scientist in animal behaviour.

C.The scientists conclude that it’s important to keep flamingos in a large flock.

D.According to a recent study, so do flamingos.

E.This avoidance may serve to prevent the fights.

F.New research shows that flamingos with brighter colors tend to be more aggressive.

  • 24、   One recent night while I was leafing through its pages of an old journal my eyes met a quote by the British writer Graham Greene that I had marked “A prejudice had something in common with an ideal.”In other words ideals—general descriptions of people's expectations of themselves and others—can often lead us to unreasonable ideas. It got me thinking about how we often allow ourselves to generalize about groups of people. We like to stereotype people by the color of their skin the year of their birth or any other related factors.

I grew up in a multi-racial corner of America. The different groups were often subject to narrow stereotypesJewish people were“greedy” Mexicans were“poorly educated” and Asians were“good at math”.These labels were taught to us from a young age. They wormed their way into our belief systems harming how we came to see others. It made me sad growing up to see people repeat these stereotypes as if they were true. The rush-to judgment of people breeds a culture of discrimination.

You can also see these over-generalized descriptions being made against today's Chinese people.Whether it be a lack of interest or worry among mile millennial being described as “monkish” or“dad-fashion”which has given the“greasy middle-aged men”tag.stereotypes always seem to gain a foothold in the consciousness of our society. But these generalizations do real harm as these myths may become part of the wider population.

It's about time that we as a society walked away from generalizations and stereotypes.I leave you with the words of Martin Luther King Jr.from his famous“I Have a Dream”speech“T look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”By reserving judgment and really getting to know the individual you might just find your irrational ideas have no foundation.

1According to the passage how do people tend to judge others?

    A.By describing people's personalities.

B.By truly getting to know those around.

    C.By observing their noticeable features.

D.By following Martin Luther King's speech.

    2Examples of“millennial”and dad-fashion”are mentioned in Paragraph 3  to reveal .

A.generalizations have unfavorable position in society

B.generalizations have a negative influence on our society

C.generalizations are found peculiar to the middle-age Chinese

D.generalizations make today's Chinese people lack interest or worry

3The passage is mainly concerned with   .

    A.the common prejudice

    B.people's expectation of themselves

    C.the groundless worries

D.the famous speech of Martin Luther King Jr.
