    Possible Limitations of Online Learning

If eLearning, however, is not based on solid instructional design theories and models it may lead to the following limitations:

    1. It may be a "solo" act.

It is true that, although online learning might be convenient and flexible, it is also a solo act. It will not be easy for all of your learners to feel comfortable when participating in online discussions and engaging more actively with their online instructors or their virtual classmates. Some people absolutely need personal contact with their educators or trainers in order to learn successfully. Furthermore, some types of learning problems may be difficult to be addressed online, and some questions can be lost in a sea of requests and inquiries. 1

    2. 2

However hard we try to fully transfer human communication to online platforms, however natural it seems to form relationships behind computer screens, a virtual environment is just not human. Nothing can replace human contact. Besides, using a computer or a tablet all the time can cause poor vision, strain injuries, and other physical problems. Consider sending guidelines about right sitting posture, desk height, etc. along with your eLearning course; it might be very useful to your audience.

    3. It requires self-discipline.

If your eLearning audience lacks self-discipline, it is unlikely that they will be motivated to self study. Traditional learning and training have the benefit of easily tracking both progress and falling behind. 3

    4. Possible lack of control.

However carefully you design your eLearning course, there is no guarantee that your messages will get across. You offer your learners control over their eLearning experience, but are they going to use it effectively? There is always the risk of your learners just going through the material without paying any attention. 4 Unless you know exactly what you’re doing with new technologies, it is very likely that you overwhelm or distract your audience.

Creating effective online learning courses requires knowledge, time, experience, commitment, great communication skills, and a true passion for learning. If you’ve got all that, then be sure that the advantages of your online training outweigh its limitations.

    A.It may be impersonal.

B.If your eLearning content is not built to make the most of the medium it will easily become disengaging.

C.This sometimes makes learners feel they lack support and reassurance.

D.It may harm your mental health.

E.Online learning requires some IT literacy, yet not every one of your learners has much experience of computers.

F.This works for many learners as well, as some people prefer their progress to be closely monitored in order to perform.

  • 22、Most teenagers in Britain receive pocket money from their parents. A report by the Bank of Scotland interviewed over 1,000 young people in Britain and found that 77% get pocket money. Different families give different amounts of pocket money. The average for eight-to-fifteen-year-olds in the UK is about £6 a week. Children in Scotland receive slightly more than the national average and Londoners get the most. Teenagers, logically, get more money than younger children. Some fifteen-to-nineteen-year-olds receive more than £100 a month. The report found that many children save at least a quarter of their weekly pocket money and that more boys than girls save their money. Lots of young people have to do housework to get their pocket money. They help at home with jobs like cleaning and cooking.

A part-time job is a choice for teenagers who don’t have pocket money or who want to earn extra money. About 15% of teenagers have a job. Popular part-time jobs for teenagers include delivering newspapers, shop work, and working in a restaurant or café. There are strict government laws about working hours. Only children over 13 can work (there are some exceptions, for example, for actors.) On a school day they can work a maximum of 2 hours a day but not during school hours. At weekends and during school holidays they can work longer hours. The national minimum wage for people aged 16-17 is £3.57 per hour. 18-year-olds must earn a minimum of £4.83. There isn’t a national minimum waged for people under 16.

In Britain some children and teenagers have a bank account. There is no legal age limit at which you can open a bank account but a bank manager can decide whether to allow a child or young person to open an account. Parents can put pocket money directly into their child’s bank account and then children can use it to pay for things without carrying money.

Saving or spending pocket money, working part-time and dealing with banks are all parts of the process of becoming a financially independent adult and having to earn and look after your own money.

【1】The pocket money for a child in Scotland per week may be _____.

    A. £4 B. £6 C. £8   D. £10

【2】Which of the following is true according to the passage?

    B. Children under 13 are not allowed to work.

    C. Most British teenagers have a part-time job.

    D. A 16-year-old can work 6 hours on Saturdays.

【3】The best title of the passage is _____.

    A. Finance and Independence

    B. Eyes on Your Pocket Money

    C. The Importance of Part-time Jobs.

    D. British Teenagers and Their Pocket Money

  • 24、Imagine a warm spring day 66 million years ago. Fish would have been swimming in the rivers in an area that’s now North Dakota in the US. Seconds later, the serenity (宁静) was ended by destruction.

These could have been the very last moments of the dinosaur era when a city-sized asteroid (小行星) struck Earth, killing off three quarters of all species on the planet. According to a study published in Nature on Feb 23, the asteroid hit in springtime.

Researchers in 2019 discovered fossilized fishes in North Dakota that died shortly after the asteroid hit Earth. They examined the fossils with a particle accelerator and found out there was seasonal growth on the bones. All fish bone cell densities and volumes can indicate the season. Because the accelerator also could capture the sizes, researchers were able to determine when in the year the asteroid hit, Dennis Voeten, a researcher at Uppsala University in Sweden told USA Today.

The timing of the collision, at least for the Northern Hemisphere, came at a particularly sensitive stage. “I think spring puts a large group of the late Cretaceous biota (白垩纪生物) in a very vulnerable spot because they were out and about looking for food, attending to offspring and trying to build up resources after the harsh winter.” Melanie During, the main author of the study, said at a news briefing.

In the Southern Hemisphere, it was autumn, a season when many creatures prepare for winter. Therefore, life in the Southern Hemisphere was a lot more prepared for this event.

It is unclear whether small animals in the Northern Hemisphere actual did worse than those in the south. There is evidence that Northern Hemisphere turtles were wiped out in the asteroid strike, after which their habitats were later repopulated by turtles from the south, Voeten told The Guardian.

【1】On what basis did researchers determine the time of year the asteroid hit?

A.The kinds of fossilized fish cells.

B.The number of fish fossils in the area.

C.The appearance of different fish species.

D.The volume and density of fossilized fish bones.

【2】What does the underlined word “offspring” most likely mean in paragraph 4?

    A.The young.

    B.A season.

    C.The homeless.

    D.A creature.

【3】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.The time of the asteroid strike was the same around the globe.

B.There were still turtles in the Northern Hemisphere after the asteroid strike.

C.No creatures could survive the asteroid impact whether in the south or north.

D.The extinction of many species has little to do with the asteroid strike.

【4】What’s the main purpose of the article?

A.To discuss why dinosaurs went extinct.

B.To explain the science behind asteroids.

C.To explore the impact of the asteroid strike.

D.To report on new research on the asteroid strike.

New Testing Method in Era of Online Learning

In research published today in Science of Learning, engineers from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute demonstrate how a testing strategy they call “distanced online testing” can effectively reduce students’ ability to receive help from one another in order to score higher on a test taken at individual homes during social distancing.

“Often in remote online exams, students can talk over the phone or internet to discuss answers,” said Ge Wang, a chair professor of biomedical engineering at Rensselaer and the corresponding author on this paper. “The key idea of our method is to minimize this chance via discrete optimization(离散优化)aided by knowledge of a student’s competencies.”

When a distanced online test is performed, students receive the same questions, but at varying times depending on their skill level. For instance, students of highest mastery levels receive each question after other groups of students have already answered those questions. This approach, Wang said, reduces the motivator for students to receive help from those who have more mastery of the material. In order to determine the order of each student’s questions, their competence levels are estimated using their grade point averages, SAT scores, or midterm scores, depending on what is available at a specific point in the semester.

According to statistical tests and post-exam surveys, this method reduced the points gained through cheating by orders of magnitude (数量级) when compared to conventional exam methods. As an added benefit, Wang said, when students knew collusion would not be possible, they were more motivated to study class material. Wang and his colleagues hope to share this innovation of teaching methods and theory beyond the Rensselaer campus.

“We plan to develop a good platform so that others can easily use this method,” said Wang, a member of the Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies at Rensselaer.
