二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、From talking robots to driverless vehicles, technology has become so advanced that the previously impossible seems to occur on a daily basis. And yet-we still have no cure for the common cold.

Why can't we stop the common cold? According to Peter Barlow, a scientist at Edinburgh Napier University, the main challenge lies in the many different types of cold viruses that belong to the rhinoviruses(鼻病毒). There are at least 160 types. They mutate(突变) so easily that they quickly become resistant to drugs, or learn to hide from our immune systems. In other words, a single cure isn't likely to work on every type of cold.

However, researchers from Stanford University and the University of California, San Francisco, have found a possible answer. They discovered a protein(蛋白质) that the viruses need. All the viruses were unable to replicate(复制) inside cells without a gene that produces a specific protein called SETD3.

To identify the gene which produces the specific protein, researchers used a gene-editing technique to test all genes in the human genome (基因组). Namely, they randomly disabled a single gene in each of the cells, so that the cells lacked one or another of every gene in our genome. These genetically modified cells were then exposed to the rhinoviruses, which cause the common cold. The team then looked at which gene was missing in cells that continued to grow. As it turned out, the one that stood out was SETD3, which makes a protein of the same name.

Carette said the plan is to find a drug which can temporarily disable the protein, instead of producing genetically modified humans. “We have identified a fantastic target that all rhinoviruses require and depend on. Take that away and the virus really has no chance,” said Carette.

【1】Which does Peter Barlow think is a problem for fighting the common cold?

    A.The poor immunity of patients.

    B.The large variety of viruses.

    C.The lack of enough cures.

    D.The side effects of drugs.

【2】What do we know about the gene-editing study in Paragraph 4?

    A.All genetically modified cells survived

B.Some genes in our genome were ignored

C.It located the gene responsible for SETD3

D.It exposed the harm of the rhinoviruses.

【3】How should we stay away from the common cold according to Carette?

    A.Apply gene-editing to human genes

    B.Avoid contacts with colds patients

    C.Prevent cold viruses from mutating

    D.Develop a drug to switch off SETD3

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.Potential defense found for cold viruses

    B.Secrets behind the human genes

C.Real causes of the common cold

    D.Puzzles over rhinoviruses solved

  • 22、   After exactly a year of staying at home, we have adapted to socializing digitally, in short bursts of time.Remember in Before Times you could head to the gym after work and then get dressed for dinner and a night out? The pandemic(疫情) has changed this. Our social batteries have run out of charge. It's been a long time since we had to perform our social role for an extended period.

For 23-year-old Hafsa, the excitement of her friends and family to restart their social lives has left her astonished. “ At the minute my parents are planning a trip abroad and I keep postponing getting back to them with a date,” she explains. “They don't know it's because of all of this. Just the thought of being in a room full of people is scary, it's like going back to school.”

Heather Garbutt, psychotherapist of the Counselling & Psychotherapy Centre says communication is key to recharging your unused social battery. “Take it slowly and don't immediately organize a large get-together,” she advises. “Go for a walk with somebody for no more than half an hour and gently get used to being with people again. It may actually be a shock to our system which has been shut down to some degree to cope with absence. We may have that longing to be with others, but that doesn't mean we are free from anxiety. It would be good to start off with a conversation about what it's going to be like when you are all together again.”

She says finding some causal topics to discuss also works. Acknowledge that many of you may feel a bit awkward after being physically apart for so long. It's a bit like learning to walk again after you've broken a limb. It may all be off-balance to begin with but you will find a new steadiness with practice. Whatever happens post-pandemic, your loved ones can't judge if you want to take it easy and not engage in the festivities immediately. We are recovering from a post-pandemic stress disorder, after all.

【1】What has become of us after a year of staying at home?

A.We are addicted to chatting with people online'

B.We may feel it impossible to go back to normal

C.We are quite looking forward to being with people.

D.We may find it hard to socialize with others like before.

【2】How did Hafsa feel about restarting her social life?

    A.Anxious.

    B.Excited.

    C.Astonished.

    D.Guilty.

【3】What does Heather Garbutt advise us to do to get reconnected?

A.Pay a visit to a close friend and stay over.

B.Hang out with your friends for several hours.

C.Have a brief chat about your future get-together.

D.Ignore those who are anxious about connecting with others.

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

A.What Can Help Repair Our Social Networks?

B.How Can We Restore Our Social Batteries?

C.When Can We Speed Up Our Reunion Plan?

D.Why Did the Pandemic Mess Up Our Social Life?

  • 23、   Sharks are amazing creatures. They are known as the deadliest hunters in the sea. Fortunately most are not, but there are some kinds of sharks that can be extremely dangerous. Look at these short descriptions of four kinds of sharks.

    The Great White Shark

Great Whites are one of the most frightening creatures in the sea. They live in tropical and subtropical waters, and they can grow up to 9 meters long. Most Great Whites are actually grey, blue or brown with a white belly, and their powerful teeth are triangles with edges like saws.

    The Whale Shark

Whale Sharks are the largest kind of shark in the world-up to 11 meters in length. They live in tropical waters all around the world, but they are not dangerous. Whale Sharks are brown or grey with white or yellow stripes. They often travel near the surface of the sea.

    The Mako Shark

Mako Sharks are fierce predators. They come from the same family of sharks as the Great White and they are especially fast-they can swim at speeds of up to 65 kilometers per hour. They are large bluish sharks found in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans. Mako Sharks can grow up to 3 meters long.

    The Great Hammerhead Shark

The Great Hammerheads' most striking feature is its wide thick head which looks like a hammer. The average size of a Great Hammerhead is approximately 3.5 meters, but can grow up to 6 meters long. These sharks average over 500 pounds but can weigh as much as 1,000 pounds. Like most sharks the females are larger than the males. They have several rows of teeth that have 24 to 37 teeth per row. The Great Hammerhead has a very keen sense of smell, which helps find its prey.

【1】What can we learn from the text?

A.Sharks usually live in icy waters.

B.Mako Sharks are fast but not dangerous.

C.Great Whites have at least 24 to 37 sharp teeth.

D.Whale Sharks are bigger than other sharks in the sea.

【2】Why is a shark called the Great Hammerhead?

    A.The size of its body.

    B.The waters it lives in.

    C.The shape of its head.

    D.The function of its teeth.

【3】From which is the text probably taken?

    A.A news report.

    B.A book review.

    C.An advertisement.

    D.A biology magazine.

  • 24、   A rare hole has opened up in the ozone layer above the Arctic, in what scientists say is the result of unusually low temperatures in the atmosphere above the north pole.

The hole, which has been (racked from space and the ground over the past few days, has reached record dimensions, but is not expected to pose any danger to humans unless it moves further south. If it extends further south overpopulated areas, such as southern Greenland, people would be at increased risk of sunburn.

However, on current trends the hole is expected to disappear altogether in a few weeks.

Low temperatures in the northern polar regions led to an unusual stable polar vortex(极地漩涡),and the presence of ozone-destroying chemicals such as chlorine(氯)in the atmosphere -- from human activities - caused the hole to form.

“The hole is principally a geophysical curiosity." said Vincent-Henri Peuch. director of the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service. "We monitored unusual dynamic(动态的)conditions, which drive the process of chemical depletion of ozone. Those dynamics allowed for lower temperatures and a more stable vortex than usual over the Arctic, which then triggered the formation of polar stratospheric(平流层的)clouds and the catalytic(催化的)destruction of ozone."

The hole is not related to the Covid-19 shutdowns that have dramatically cut air pollution and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. It is also too early to say whether the unusually stable Arctic polar vortex conditions are linked with the climate crisis, or part of normal stratospheric weather variability.

Peuch said there were no direct implications for the climate crisis. Temperatures in the region are already increasing, slowing the depletion of ozone, and the hole will start to recover as polar air mixes with ozone-rich air from lower latitudes. The last time similar conditions were observed was in spring 2011.

While a hole over the Arctic is a rare event, the much larger hole in the ozone layer over the Antarctic has been a major cause for concern for more than four decades. The production of ozone-depleting chemicals has been dramatically reduced, under the 1987 Montreal Protocol 蒙特利尔协议),but some sources appear still to be functioning—in 2018. unauthorized emissions were detected from some areas.

New sources of ozone-depleting chemicals were not a factor in the hole observed in the Arctic, said Peuch. "However, this is a reminder that one should not take the Montreal Protocol measures for granted, and that observations from the ground and from satellites are central to avoid a situation where the ozone-destroying chemical level in the stratosphere could increase again.'

1What is the possible meaning of the underlined word "depletion"?

    A.replacement B.consumption

    C.increase D.production

2According to the passage, scientists are concerned about the hole because .

A.it is expected to be a threat to the mankind

B.the new hole is caused by air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions

C.it may encourage further scientific research and environmental awareness

D.it warns us of an oncoming climate crisis

3What can be learned from the last two paragraphs?

A.The hole over the Arctic shares the same causes as the one over the Antarctic.

B.Human activities are highly responsible for producing ozone-destroying chemicals.

C.The Montreal Protocol has successfully prevented new emissions.

D.Some new illegal emissions are to blame for the hole over the Arctic.

4The best title for the passage is probably .

A.Record-size Hole Opens in Ozone Layer above the Arctic

B.Actions Urgently Needed for a New Hole in Ozone Layer

    C.Environmental Disaster and International Cooperation

D.How a Hole in Ozone Affects our Life on Earth

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The Christmas I will never forget happened when I was 9. I believed in Santa with all my heart. How could I not when I received everything I wished for.

December 1st. Mom would announce, “It’s time.” Hearing those words, we all knew it was time to write our letters to Santa. One day I asked mom why we always wrote our letters on December 1st. She said because so many kids were writing letters to Santa, he needed time to read them and make all the toys the kids wanted. Once our letters were finished, mom would put them in her purse and mail them the next day.

Christmas Eve finally arrived. We were all so excited. We did our Christmas Eve traditions. Daddy read us The Night Before Christmas’ story. Then it was time for sleep. I had such a good feeling about Christmas this year. It was difficult to fall asleep. But sleep finally came and so did Christmas morning. I woke up hearing my brothers yelling. Jimmy came running and jumping on my bed. “Santa’s been here, sister! Let’s open presents!”

We ran down the stairs. Our eyes were glowing like wildfire as we eyed over the presents under the tree. My brothers and I quickly snuggled (依偎) among the packages. We all watched as each person unwrapped a gift. I kept watching as my brothers unwrapped gifts. My dad didn’t hand me any package. “This year you are going to be the last to get your presents because you are the oldest.” he declared. I didn’t think anything of it, so I whispered “OK.”

One by one all of the packages had been opened. There was none left. I couldn’t understand. I had been so good this year. Tears began sliding down my cheeks. I ran up to my room. My mom went up the stairs for me to come back down. Dad wanted to talk to me, Sobbing, I slowly made my way back.
