  • 22、One of the greatest sources of unhappinessin my experienceis the difficulty we have in accepting things as they are

When we see something we don’t likewe wish it could be differentWe cry out for something betterThat may be human natureor perhaps it’s something ingrained(根深蒂固的) in our cultureThe root of the unhappiness isn’t necessarily that we want things to be differentHowever, it’s that we decided we didn’t like it in the first placeWe’ve judged it as badrather than saying, “It's not bad or goodand it just is it

In one of my booksI said“You should expect people to mess up and expect things to go differently than you planned”Some readers said it's too sorrowful to expect things to go wrongHowever, it’s only negative if you see it as negative and judge it as badInsteadyou could accept it as the way the world works and try to understand why that is

This can be applied to whatever you dohow other people act at workhow politics works and how depressing the news media can beAccept these things as they areand try to understand why they’re that wayIt will save you a lot of sadnessbecause you’ll no longer say,“OhI wish bad things didn’t happen!’’

Does it mean you can never change things? Not at a11But change things not because you can’t accept things as they arebut because you enjoy the process of changinglearning and growing

Can we make this world a better place? You can say that you’11 continue to try to do things to help othersto grow as a personto make a difference in this worldThat’s the correct path you choose to takebecause you enjoy that pathThereforewhen you find yourself judging and wishing for differencetry a different approachacceptand understandIt might lead to some interesting results

  • 23、For the last 10 years, job listing site CareerBuilder has put out a list called “The Most Unbelievable Excuses for Calling in Sick.” For example, an employee said he couldn’t come in because his false teeth flew out the window while he was driving down the highway. The excuses were gathered through a survey that ran among 3,000 workers and 2,000 hiring managers.

The list is entertaining but there is a more serious issue hidden in this story. Federal law does not require private employers to give any paid sick leave, making the US the only one of the world’s wealthiest nations that doesn’t guarantee workers this right. Since 2006, cities and states have been adopting their own paid sick leave laws. California, Washington. DC and 13 cities including New York now require many employers to provide some sort of paid sick leave. But according to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, 39% of private employees still have no access to paid days off. In the CareerBuilder survey, 38% of respondents said they go to work when they’re sick because they can’t afford to miss a day’s pay. The survey also shows that workers are taking a risk when they come up with far-fetched excuses. Nearly one in five employers says they have fired an employee for calling in sick with a fake excuse. If you’re spending the day at the beach while pretending to be ill, don’t post about it on Facebook. Nearly one in four employers (24%) has caught an employee lying about being sick by checking social media.

The motto of this story: If you really are sick, don’t come to work and spread your bacteria around the office. But if you just want to stay home, go with “I’m running a fever.” rather than one of these ridiculous excuses.

【1】The underlined word “far-fetched” in Paragraph 2 probably means ______.

    A. impossible to find   B. likely to be true

    C. difficult to believe   D. easy to believe

【2】What problem is exposed in the survey?

    A. Many employees have no access to paid sick leave.

    B. Private employers make their workers work extra hours.

    C. Some employees are not satisfied with their boss.

    D. Private employers sometimes break the Federal law.

【3An employee will run the risk of being fired if he ______.

    A. asks for sick leave

    B. lies about being sick

    C. posts his holiday on Facebook

    D. spreads bacteria around the office

【4】What will the author present following the last paragraph?

    A. A list of survey data.

    B. A list of serious issues.

    C. A list of reasonable facts.

    D. A list of ridiculous excuses.

  • 24、   For many, traveling is a way to escape the worst parts of daily life. But what if a travel destination witnessed terrible events, like war, genocide(大屠杀)or nuclear fallout? Would you still want to visit?

There’s a growing phenomenon called “dark tourism” people visit sites associated with death and human suffering.

“It’s living on the edge almost -if you go to a place where people have really died,” Karel Werdler, a senior lecturer in history at InHolland University in the Netherlands, told CNN.

When people go to traditional tourist spots, like Disneyland, or some wonders of the world, they may feel happy to enjoy something interesting or new. Dark tourism, however, not only provides that novelty(新奇)but also can make them feel lucky that their problems are so small in comparison.

According to the Guardian, “Dark tourism to some extent relies on the reverse(颠倒)of the old equation(方程式)of more familiar tourism.”

For many people, these sites offer a way to reflect on the mistakes of the past and the lessons we can learn from history.

For example, Chernobyl, in the Ukraine, is one of the most popular dark destinations. When its nuclear reactor(核反应堆)exploded in 1984, it released a radioactive(放射性的)cloud so devastating that the surrounding area will remain uninhabitable(不适宜居住的)for 20,000 years.

Despite the destruction and danger of the still present radiation, nearly 72,000 people visited the area last year, reports the BBC. One of these was Li Yimeng, who went on a tour of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. During the tour she saw the homes of the power plant’s former workers, deserted classrooms, and an abandoned playground.

“I experienced a whole range of emotions as I saw the area where they used to live, which is now a wasteland,” she told China Daily. She also emphasized the need to show respect when visiting locations like Chernobyl.

Though dark tourism is related to death and dying, “it tells us more about life and the living”, The Sun noted.

1What is the main idea of the article?

A.Comparison among different types of travel.

B.Information of a new travel trend.

C.Reasons why readers should get involved in dark tourism.

D.Introduction to one of the most popular dark destinations.

2What makes dark tourism different from traditional tourism?

A.It is more boring and unpleasant.

B.It is more popular with young people.

C.The destination usually has a dark past.

D.The scene teaches people how to face death.

3What does the underlined word “devastating” in Paragraph 7 probably mean?

    A.Dark. B.Mysterious.

    C.Enormous. D.Destructive.

4What does the author try to show with the example of Li Yimeng?

A.Dark tourism reminds people to take action to avoid disasters.

B.Dark tourism can be a scary experience.

C.Dark tourism makes people think about life.

D.Dark tourism warns people to be cautious about high technology.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My school had a tradition during the ninth-grade graduation: a beautiful gold and green jacket (the school colors), was awarded to the student who had maintained the highest grades for nine years.

I had been a straight A student since the first grade and had looked forwards very much to owning that jacket. My father was a farm laborer who couldn't earn enough money to feed five children. I was given to my grandparents to raise. There would never be a school sports jacket for us. This scholarship jacket was my only chance.

One day in May, I happened to overhear in the office. Mr. Schmidt, my history teacher, and Mr. Boone, my math teacher arguing about me. “I refuse to do it! I don't care who her father is;her grades can't match Martha's at all. I won't lie or falsify (伪造)records.” said Mr. Schmidt angrily.

But Mr. Boone's voice sounded calm. “Joann's father is not only on the Board (董事会), he owns the only store in town: we could say it was a close tie and…”

Shaking and sad, I, waited a few minutes and walked away.

The next day when the principal called me into his office. “Martha,” he said, “There's been a change in policy this year regarding the scholarship jacket. This year the Board has decided to charge fifteen dollars, which still won't cover the complete cost of the jacket. So if you are unable to pay the money for the jacket, it will be given to the next one in line.”

Standing with all the dignity I could find, I said,“I'll speak to my grandfather about it, sir, and let you know tomorrow.” I cried on the way home.
