二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Improvements to energy efficiency, such as LED lights, are seen by many authorities as a top priority for cutting carbon emissions. Yet a growing body of research suggests that a rebound effect could wipe out more than half of the savings from energy efficiency improvements, making the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change even harder to hit.

A team led by Paul Brockway at the University of Leeds, UK, looked at the existing 33 studies on the impact of the rebound effect. First comes the direct rebound: for instance, when someone buys a more efficient car, they may take advantage of that by driving it further. Then comes the indirect rebound: fuel savings leave the owner with more money to spend elsewhere in the economy, consuming energy.

Although the 33 studies used different methods to model the rebound effect, they produced very consistent estimates of its impact, leading the team to conclude that the effect wipes out, on average, 63 percent of the anticipated energy savings.

“We're not saying energy efficiency doesn't work. What we're saying is rebound needs to be taken more seriously,” says Brockway.

The idea that increased efficiency may not deliver the hopedfor savings dates back to the Jevons paradox(悖论), named after the economist William Stanley Jevons, who, in 1865,observed that more efficient coal use led to more demand for coal.

If the rebound effect does prove to be as big as suggested, it means future global energy demand will be higher than expected and the world will need far more wind and solar power and carboncapture technology than is currently being planned for.

But that doesn't mean nothing can be done to limit the rebound effect. One answer is to double down on energy efficiency and do twice as much to achieve the same effect.

【1】Which of the following is a rebound effect?

A.A man uses LED lights to cut carbon emissions.

B.A company uses coal more efficiently to reduce waste.

C.A family saves money by using energysaving devices.

D.A lady spends savings from her fuel efficient car on more clothes.

【2】How did Paul Brockway's team carry out their research?

    A.By interviewing economists.

    B.By analyzing former studies.

    C.By modeling the rebound effect.

D.By debating about the Jevons paradox.

【3】What would Paul Brockway probably agree with?

    A.Authorities should dismiss energy efficiency.

B.Worldwide efforts to preserve energy are in vain.

C.The rebound effect helps protect the environment.

D.More attention should be paid to the rebound effect.

【4】What's the author's attitude towards limiting the rebound effect?

    A.Positive.

    B.Pessimistic.

    C.Doubtful.

    D.Disapproving.

  • 23、   The annoying persons walking down the street with their heads buried in their cellphones—sometimes you could be one of them—are not just slowing themselves down. They are also damaging other people's ability to move quickly and efficiently(有效地), according to a new study.

Like flocks of birds or schools of fish, human crowds self-organize to move safely and efficiently. But such efficiency is only possible when people can anticipate others' moves so that they can adjust their own movements accordingly.

To test how a phone tapper might mess with this flow, scientists set up a straight passage on a closed-off street for two groups of 27 pedestrians to walk down in opposite directions. They tracked each person's path of travel, measured how fast these walkers were moving, and calculated the groups' order parameter, which measures where and when straight lanes(路线) formed. The researchers also tasked three participants in one group with typing on their phones as they walked, and ran three different experimental conditions where the participants using cellphones were in front, middle or back of their walking group.

Such is what happened with the inattentive individuals in front: Lanes both behind and opposite them developed slowly and—when compared with the middle and back positions—several seconds later than they would have if all pedestrians were alert(警觉的).

As expected, phone users had trouble making predictions about the movements of others because they couldn't see the crowd around them. But the researchers also found that alert pedestrians, especially those moving toward cellphone users, had to make sharp turns or step out of the way to avoid collisions. The volunteers were also unable to tell the moves of the inattentive walkers in advance, even though they could devote their full attention to the paths in front of them.

【1】What does the underlined word “anticipate” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Predict.

    B.Copy.

    C.Block.

    D.Change.

【2】What did the researchers do to all the participants in their tests?

    A.They changed their walking path.

    B.They kept them using cellphones.

    C.They tracked their mental changes.

    D.They measured their walking speed.

【3】What do the last two paragraphs focus on?

    A.The findings of the study.

    B.How to walk attentively.

    C.How to avoid collisions.

    D.The meanings of the study.

【4】What is the main idea of the text?

A.More and more pedestrians are using cellphones.

B.Pedestrians should be mindful of careless walkers.

C.Inattentive pedestrians are losing their directions.

D.Cellphone users can cause poor pedestrian traffic.

  • 24、Researchers have 3D printed a heart using a patient's cells, providing hope that the technique could be used to heal hearts or engineer new ones for transplants.

“This is the first time anyone anywhere has successfully engineered and printed an entire heart,” Professor Tal Dvir said in a statement. Dvir is the senior author of the research, published on Monday in the journal Advanced Science.

The cells that made the heart came from a donor's fat tissue. Researchers separated the cells in the tissue from the rest of the contents. The cells were reprogrammed to become stem cells with the ability into heart cells. The cells and hydrogel were first used to create heart patches with blood vessels (血管) and, from there, an entire heart.

At this stage, our 3D heart is small, the size of a rabbit's heart,” Dvir said. “But larger human require the same technology.” Previously, scientists had been able to print only simple tissues without blood vessels.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the developing world. Heart transplantation is the only way to treat end-stage heart failure, highlighting the importance of developing techniques such as 3D printing, according to the authors.

Dvir also explained that using the patient's own cells is key to engineering the tissues and organs. “It's important because it prevents the possibility of rejection,” he said.

Next, the researchers plan to train the hearts to behave like real ones. Dvir explained, “The cells need to form a pumping ability; they can contract, but we need them to work together.”

If researchers are successful, they plan to transplant the 3D-printed heart in animal models and, after that, humans. “Maybe, in ten years ,there will be organ printers in the finest hospitals around the world ,and these procedures will be conducted routinely,” Dvir said.

【1】What can we know about the 3D-printed heart?

A.It is almost of the same size as the human heart.

B.It uses the cells coming from an animal fat tissue to 3D print a heart.

C.It can provide the technology human hearts required in the future.

D.It can replace the patient’s heart in treating heart disease in ten years

【2】What is the third paragraph mainly about?

    A.Value of the new technique.

    B.Procedures of dealing with cells.

    C.Tips about heart disease treatment.

D.Materials used in the 3D-printed heart.

【3】What do we know from what Professor Tal Dvir said?

A.The researchers are successful in 3D printing human heart.

B.Every hospital will have organ printers around the world.

C.Researchers will transplant the 3D-printed heart in ten years.

D.Professor Dvir is looking forward to the success of the research.

A.To show how to 3D print a heart.

    B.To promote heart disease research.

    C.To introduce a medical breakthrough.

D.To call on people to care about health.
