二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Last year, a team of biologists and computer scientists from Tufts University and the University of Vermont (UVM) created novel, self-healing biological machines called Xenobots 1.0. Measuring less than 1mm long and made up of 500—1,000 living cells, it could move around, and demonstrate cooperative group activities while collecting piles of micro particles.

The research team has now created a new generation—Xenobots 2.0, which move faster, and have a longer life than the first edition, and they still have the ability to work together in groups and heal themselves if damaged.

The biologists took stem cells from embryos of the African frog Xenopus (hence the name Xenobots) and allowed them to develop independently and grow into small balls, where some of the cells after a few days began to produce cilia, tiny hair-like things sticking out that move back and forth or turn around in a specific way, which gives the new round robots “legs” to move them rapidly across a surface.

“We want Xenobots 2.0 to do useful work. Right now, we're giving them simple tasks such as garbage collection in the blood, but ultimately, we're aiming for a new kind of living tool that could, for example, clean up microplastics in the ocean or pollutants in the soil.” said Michael Levin, a famous professor of Biology from Tufts University.

It turns out, the new Xenobots 2.0 are much faster and better than last year's model. They can record information to adjust the robot's actions and behaviors, and they can also repair and restore themselves if they become damaged. Healing is a natural feature of living organisms, and it is a new model system that can provide a foundation for regenerative medicine.

【1】Which advantage does the Xenobots 2.0 have over the first edition?

    A.It changes faster.

    B.It performs better.

    C.It becomes longer.

    D.It evolves more slowly.

【2】What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A.The definition of Xenobots 2.0.

    B.The function of Xenobots 2.0.

    C.The movement of Xenobots 2.0.

    D.The development of Xenobots 2.0.

【3】What can Xenobots 2.0 do at present?

    A.Break down nutrients.

B.Sweep out pollutants in the soil.

    C.Collect garbage in the blood.

D.Clean up the microplastics in the ocean.

【4】On what basis will Xenobots 2.0 contribute to regenerative medicine?

    A.Recording.

    B.Healing.

    C.Memorizing.

    D.Moving

  • 22、My neighbors across the street take pride in one of the most striking trees in the neighborhood—a towering oak that is over 75 years old. This year, after a wet, warm summer, leaves were a bit different in my Massachusetts town. And through some combination of events, that glorious oak seemed to have dropped all of its uncountable leaves on a single windy day. I arrived at home that afternoon to find our front walkway, driveway and sidewalk completely blanketed.

My son and I had a great time making a leaf pile for jumping and enjoying pillowy fun. The whole time, I was fascinated by the speed of this year’s leaf drop. Even though I was aware that it was an accident of wind patterns that left all the leaves in our yard, I kept looking up and feeling a zing of awe at the suddenly bare branches that watched quietly over our neighborhood, starting its restful season before setting spring leaf buds.

And I felt thankful for those fallen leaves as I was reminded of my favorite quote from the author and naturalist Hal Borland. He wrote it referencing October, but this year’s later drop had me change the month:“November is the fallen leaf, but it is also a wider horizon more clearly seen. It is the distant hills once more in sight, and the enduring constellations (星座) above them once again.”

When I lay in that pile of dry, crisp leaves and looked up into the oak tree across the street, I felt a clarity and peace that comes along with the inconveniently early sunsets and chilly temperatures of the transition from fall into winter. I could still admire the tree as I had in spring and summer, but I could also see through it, beyond it, to the big sky that blankets us all.

    【1】What’s unusual this year?

A.Outdoor activities are limited due to heavy winds.

B.A series of special events happened in the neighborhood.

C.The weather is especially cold in winter in Massachusetts.

D.The neighbors’ big tree dropped all its leaves within a day.

【2】What kind of feeling does the underlined part “a zing of awe” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.Anxiety.

    B.Sorrow.

    C.Comfort.

    D.Amazement.

【3】Why is Hal Borland’s lines quoted in Paragrapn 3?

A.To express the author’s admiration for the naturalist.

B.To emphasize the importance of getting close to nature.

C.To express the author’s feelings about the leaf-falling season.

D.To emphasize the beauty of the author’s childhood memories.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.The Sky Far Beyond.

    B.The Fall of Massachusetts.

    C.The Beauty of a Newly-bare Tree.

D.The Memories of Peace and Beauty.

  • 23、   The Australian state of New South Wales rolled out “high definition detection cameras" on Sunday, designed to catch drivers using cell phones behind the wheel.

Andrew Constance, New South Wales' minister for roads, said the "world-fist" technology would target illegal cell phone use through "fixed and mobile cameras". The cameras will use artificial intelligence to review images and detect illegal use of cell phones, according to Transport for NSW.

Images identified as being likely to contain a driver illegally using a cell phone would then be verified by traffic police. Those images would be securely stored and managed.

Over the next three years, 45 portable cameras would be set up across the state, in unknown locations, and without warning signs, CNN branch Sky News Australia reported.

For the first three months, drivers caught out by the technology would receive a warning letter, Transport for New South Wales said in a statement, after which the drivers would face a fine of up to $344, or $457 in a school zone, and loss of points on their drivers' license.

“The NSW Government is serious about reducing our state's road deaths and launching mobile phone detection cameras is another way we will do this." Con stance said in a statement.

Officials said that a trial of the technology earlier in the year had caught more than 100,000 drivers illegally using a phone behind the wheel. Some 329 people died this year on New South Wales' roads, Reuters news agency reported, compared with 354 people for 2018, according to official statistics.

1Why does the NSW Government set up detection cameras?

A.To get some real-time information about the traffic.

B.To monitor people crossing the street casually.

C.To catch drivers using cell phones illegally.

3What can we infer from the passage?

A.Locations of the cameras will be informed in advance.

B.Illegal driving in school zones is punished more severely.

C.Illegal drivers will be fined once cameras are set up.

D.Cameras are the first attempt for the government to cut road deaths.

4What's the officials, attitude towards the trial of the technology?

    A.Supportive. B.Disapproving.

    C.Doubtful. D.Unconcerned.

  • 24、It was a warm spring evening. As I often do after a long day, I went straight to my backyard and did some work in my flower garden. I had only just walked a few steps on the patio (露台) when I suddenly felt a horrifying blow to the right side of my neck. Totally confused, I reached up and, to my shock and horror, realized that I had been shot — with an arrow.

I grabbed the arrow with a death grip where it had pierced my neck and ran inside, screaming my husband’s name. Ed ran to me and called an ambulance. I lay on the couch and prayed. I didn’t know if there was any way I could survive.

The arrow had come from a young man practising with a hunting bow in his backyard. Luckily, he was using a practice arrow. An arrow for hunting would have killed me.

At the hospital, I tried hard to reassure my family and friends. I kept telling them I was fine, but the looks on their faces told me that they weren’t buying it. After a CT scan, the doctors and nurses began telling me how lucky I was. The arrow had gone between the carotid artery and the jugular vein. There was no bleeding at all. Although I didn’t realize how incredible this was, I began arguing with them that I wasn’t “lucky“, I was “blessed”. Someone told my son there was a post on the site texasbowhunter.com asking for prayers for me. It turns out a friend had posted the prayer request on that website.

The morning after my two-hour surgery to remove the arrow, the surgeon came in my room. He revealed that I had a brain tumour and the surgery had to be done. I remember going a bit numb but thinking, God works in mysterious ways. The brain surgery was successful and in less than a week I was back home.

Nothing eventful happened for a couple of years. After an MRI in 2015, I was told that there was still no sign of a tumour growing back. Had it not been for that arrow, I would have died from a brain tumour. And honestly, the arrow should have killed me. But it didn’t.

Coincidences? Luck? I think not. The gentleman who wrote the last comment on the prayer-request thread on texasbowhunter.com summed it up in just two words. He simply wrote, “Amazing grace”.

【1】How did the author’ family feel when she told them she was fine at the hospital?

    A.Doubtful

    B.Concerned

    C.Convinced

    D.Reassured

【2】What did the author think of all that happened to her?

A.It is a blessing in disguise.

    B.No pleasure without pain.

    C.One good turn deserves another.

    D.What goes around comes around.

【3】Why did the gentleman write “amazing grace”?

    A.To appeal for attention.

    B.To describe his reaction.

    C.To call for others’ support.

D.To comment on the whole issue.
