二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Oxford English Dictionary(OED) announced on November 23 for the first time that it has chosen not to name one single word of the year, but many words for the “special” year 2020. Describing 2020 as “a year which cannot be neatly summarized in one single word”. OED said on Monday that there were too many words to sum up the events of 2020. From more than 11 billion words found in web-based news, blogs and other text sources, its lexicographers(词典编纂者)revealed what the dictionary described as “great shifts in language data and frequency rises in new words” over the past 12 months.

Most words of the year are coronavirus-related, including coronavirus, lockdown, circuit-breaker, keyworkers and face masks. The report said the word "coronavirus" dates back to the 1960s and was previously "mainly used by scientific and medical specialists". But by April this year it had become one of the most frequently used nouns in the English language, beyond even the usage of the word "time". It said use of the word “pandemic” has increased by more than 57,000 percent this year.

The revolution in working habits during the pandemic has also affected language, with both “remote” and “remotely” seeing more than 300 percent growth in use since March. “On mute(静音)”and “unmute” have seen 500 percent rises since March, while the words “workation” and “staycation” also increased drastically.

Casper Grathwohl, the president of Oxford Dictionaries, said. “I've never witnessed a year in language like the one we've just had. The Oxford team was identifying hundreds of significant new words and usages as the year unfolded.” “2020 has been filled with new words unlike any other,” Grathwohl added.

The OED's announcement mirrored the huge influence of the COVID-19 on the people from all walks of life. To bring life back to normal, countries such as Britain, China, Germany, Russia and the United States are racing against time to develop coronavirus vaccines.

    A.They are precise.

【3】Which of the following best explains “drastically” underlined in paragraph 3?

  • 22、   From birds to bees and wolves to frogs, animals use numbers to hunt, find a mate, return to their home, and more—and researchers believe that this ability to process and represent numbers, known as numerical (数字的) competence, influences an animal’s chance of survival.

In a review published in the journal Trends in Ecology and Evolution, Andreas Nieder, a neurobiologist at the University of Tuebingen, Germany, suggests the capability to differentiate numbers has to have a strong survival benefit and reproduction (繁殖) benefit.

Honeybees, for instance, can remember the number of landmarks they pass when searching for food in order to find their way back to the hive (蜂房). Also, for example, male frogs sing “advertisement” calls to attract females. The females, listening for the complexity of their calls, choose the male that sings the most calls.

This can also be seen in animals choosing a larger amount of food over a small amount or in animals forming hunting groups. Wolves are more likely to hunt successfully if they have the right number of wolves in their pack for the size of their prey (猎物): with prey like deer, only around six to eight wolves are needed, while hunting wild ox requires a pack of nine to thirteen. Their prey also use this concept to protect themselves from wolves—deer tend to live in smaller herds, which rarely have encounters with wolves, or gather in large herds to reduce the chance of any individual becoming prey.

Despite these many examples of numerical competence in animals, this subject has not gotten many first-hand studies. “Many of these behavioral findings in the wild have usually been collected as by-products or accidental findings of other research questions,” says Nieder. He argues that more research needs to be done to fully understand the numerical competence.

【1】How does the author mainly develop this text?

    A.By listing figures.

    B.By asking questions.

    C.By making comparisons.

    D.By giving examples.

【2】What role does numerical competence play in wolves’ hunting?

A.It gives them more options to hunt.

B.It helps them form hunting groups.

C.It makes them discover more prey.

D.It offers them new skills to hunt.

【3】What’s Nieder’s attitude to these instances to prove animals have numerical competence?

    A.Positive.

    B.Ambiguous.

    C.Doubtful.

    D.Negative.

【4】What can be a suitable title for this passage?

    A.Animals Taught to Distinguish Numbers

    B.Animals Learned Numbers to Survive

C.The Smartest Animals in Hunting and Reproduction

D.Animals’ Numerical Intelligence Affects their Survival

  • 23、   There is a lot of controversy around whether or not teachers should be allowed to wear jeans, but I think jeans should be a part of the teacher dress code, and here is why.

Jeans say I’m dressed to work, not just for work.

It’s hard to sit down on the carpet and read a book with your kids while you’re wearing a skirt. I can’t lean over a desk to help a student in a classroom full of teenagers if I’m concerned about where my skirt ends up when I’m bent over. 1. I can work in jeans: I can move, sit, stand, or kneel without worry.

    2.

What’s the key to being an excellent teacher? Great relationships with your students. Dressed clothes say I’m your boss, but jeans say I’m with you. In my classroom, I am a facilitator, a coach and a mentor. 3.

Teachers who wear jeans are happier.

“Happy teacher,  happy class”  seems  like  a  good  saying. 4.  When  you’re comfortable, you’re happy. When you’re happy, you’re a better teacher. And when you’re a better teacher, your students learn more. Who isn’t happy when they’re wearing their favorite pair of comfy jeans?

    5.

Teachers today don’t just stand up in front and lecture anymore. Being comfortable means being able to move, to bend down to help students, or to sit on the floor to help a kid organize their backpack full of papers.

I work in a school where teachers wear jeans regularly, but we don’t look like a slovenly(不整洁的)group of people, nor are our students suffering because of our casual clothes. Most of the arguments against wearing jeans claim that if teachers want to be treated like professionals, they should look like  professionals, but  I’d  argue that  there is  no  longer a blanket look for professionals.

    A.Jeans solve these problems

    B.Wearing jeans helps build relationships

C.Teachers and students feel energetic wearing jeans

D.Jeans allow teachers to be more mobile and hands-on

E.Jeans help teachers do their jobs at the highest possible level

F.After all, the teacher’s mood usually sets the tone for the day

G.Jeans allow me to fill those roles more easily and comfortably

  • 24、   Visitors to Henn-na, a restaurant outside Nagasaki, Japan, are greeted by an unusual sight: their food being prepared by a row of humanoid robots. The “head chef”, named Andrew, is using his two long arms; he stirs batter (面糊) in a metal bowl, then pours it onto a hot grill. In a nearby hotel, robots check guests into their rooms and help with their luggage.

CEO Hideo Sawada, who runs the restaurant and the hotel, predicts that 70% of the jobs at Japan’s hotels will be automated (自动化) in the next five years. He said, “Since you can work them 24 hours a day, and they don’t need vacation, eventually it’s more cost-efficient to use the robot.”

This is seemingly worrying. In fact, in America, automation helps the food-service and accommodation sector continue to grow. In the company Panera, because of its new kiosks, an app that allows online ordering, the chain is now processing more orders overall, which means it needs more total workers to meet consumer demand. Starbucks customers who use the chain’s app return more frequently than those who don’t, the company has said, and the greater efficiency that online ordering allows has boosted sales at busy stores during peak hours. Starbucks employed 8% more people in the U.S. in 2016 than it did in 2015, the year it launched the app.

Of course, whether automation is a net benefit for workers in restaurants and hotels, and not just a competitive advantage for one chain over another will depend on whether an improved customer experience makes Americans more likely to dine out and stay at hotels, rather than brown-bagging it or finding an Airbnb to book unique homes.

1Why does the writer describe the unusual sight in Paragraph 1?

A.To promote robots. B.To introduce the topic.

C.To voice his opinion. D.To show the background.

2What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 mean?

A.Automation may be a challenge to human jobs.

    B.Automation may increase business costs.

C.Workers may fail to focus on their tasks.

D.Many companies may fail to survive.

3What can we learn from the two cases in Paragraph 3?

A.The two companies are trying to take over the market competitively.

B.Automation could open up more job chances for humans.

C.Starbucks employed more people than Panera did in 2016.

D.Automation helps the shops become famous online.

4What is the author’s attitude towards the future of automation?

    A.Critical. B.Negative. C.Objective. D.Indifferent.
