二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   A rescue group made sure hunting dogs Herbier and Hilda were adopted as a pair since Hilda helps Herbier get around.

For more than 50 years, guide dogs have been trained to help humans with vision challenges live without boundaries and enjoy independence in their homes, offices, and the community at large. Given dogs' ability to be trained, along with their skills, it seemed unavoidable that there would be an unofficial guide dog for a blind dog.

Almost more exciting is the fact that one such set, which was abandoned together in Salem about a month ago, has found a new forever home that will allow the blind dog and his caretaker dog to remain together.

A little more than a month ago, someone abandoned three dogs over the fence of a local gentleman who formerly rescued greyhounds. The man no longer rescues the little dogs of being long of body, short of leg and droopy of ears, but he did know to take them to the Marion County Dog Services shelter.

The county shelter knew immediately to contact Diane Young at Salem Dogs, a local dog rescue known for being heavy on love and affection that the county most likely has on speed dial.

The rescue director responded in time, taking in the two of the dogs. One black male was healthy and passed tests quickly and easily. He was put up for adoption at the shelter and was quickly accepted.

The other two are between the ages of 4 and 5, required a bit more care. Hilda, a long-haired, black-dappled female, was obviously connected to Herbier, a light-brown, smooth-coated brown greyhound who had vision problems.

1What can we learn about the abandoned dogs?

A.They have been trained for their ability and skills.

B.The three dogs were abandoned because they are blind.

C.They are finally adopted to live with the man who found them.

D.The dog Hilda offers to help the blind dog Herbier get around.

2What does the underlined word “greyhounds” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

A.Cows who have lost their babies. B.Dogs who are abandoned by their owners.

C.Humans who become old and lonely. D.Chickens which are living with their mom.

3What can we infer from this text?

A.The touching story of two dogs helping each other happened one month ago.

B.Humans began to train dogs for the ability and skills of guidance five years ago.

C.The two abandoned dogs are still living together at the shelter today.

D.The two dogs were abandoned most probably because they were blind.

4What is the text mainly about?

A.A moving story about two dogs. B.The Marion County Dog Services shelter.

C.A dog and a blind dog were trained. D.Two dogs were abandoned by a man.

  • 22、   Every two or three months, Thyago Ohana goes out on the busy streets of Vienna with a sign saying "Free Hugs". The handsome 32-year-old Brazilian, who works in international trade at India's Vienna embassy, chooses a popular site, like the historic shopping street, Kaerntner Strasse. There he opens his arms to anyone who wants a hearty embrace(拥抱).

He does it because back in 2012, when he was feeling very stressed and anxious during a visit to Paris, a stranger gave him a free hug. He's never forgotten how it filled him with unexpected calm and joy.

For those who take up his offer, the hug makes them laugh and smile. But sometimes it does more, as when an elderly woman in a tour group stopped and watched him. The group moved on, but she remained and asked, "Can I have a hug?" "Of course you can!" said Thyago who wrapped his arms round her. When they broke their embrace, she kept holding onto his shoulders and looked into his eyes. "Thank you," she said. "I can't remember the last time I was hugged this way."

It's a memory that still makes Thyago emotional. "It was a really powerful moment of human connection. It's why 1 keep doing it."

Of our five senses, our sense of touch is the one that is most easily taken for granted. "A child can be born blind or deaf and they will grow up just fine," says David J Linden, author of Touch: The Science of Hand, Heart, and Mind. "Yet if a baby is lacking in loving social touch for the first two years of life, then all sorts of disasters unfold." That's one reason why when babies are born, they are now usually placed on their mother's skin.

Linden says however you do it, "maximizing touch in your life is a good thing"- whether holding hands, petting a dog, going to the hairdresser, hugging our kids, our partners or even a

    stranger.

1Why did Thyago Ohana offer free hugs to strangers?

A.He longed for calm and joy.

    B.He felt stressed and upset.

C.He wanted others to feel connected and cared.

D.He hoped to help others cure their diseases.

2What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5 suggest?

A.Our sense of touch isn't so important.

B.Our sense of touch is undervalued.

C.Our sense of touch does no good to us.

D.Our sense of touch is thought highly of.

3What does David J Linden think of social touch?

A.The way of offering social touch counts.

B.Offering hugs is the best way to get social touch.

C.Blind kids will be cured as long as they get enough social touch.

D.Many problems can be tracked back to babyhood short of social touch.

4Where is this text most likely from?

A.A health magazine. B.A research paper.

C.A guide book. D.A biology textbook.

  • 23、Last month, my husband and I completed what some of our friends considered a foolish task: a 32-day, 5, 232-mile camping trip with children in our Volkswagen van, without 'high-tech' to occupy the children.

It was the screen less journey that showered me with doubts. But is 'boredom' senseless? My friend Renee, who has driven cross-country with her three kids eight times, calls boredom the mother of creativity. She's not the only one who sees virtue in blank time. In a recently published paper, researchers at East Anglia University in England concluded that the trance like (发呆的) state helps recharge the mind and is 'central to learning and creativity'. I wasn't trying to make my kids smarter. Neither do I dislike high-tech. But I understand too well the power of mini screens to transform our kids into zombies (木讷的人) .

On Day 1, our 7-year-old son announced 'Texas is so boring!'. The next day, struggling against his seat belt, he yelled he couldn't take much more of this. His 5-year-old sister was better at the long hours playing make-believe with the stuffed animals. On Day 3, he began count mountains and see pandas and dolphins in distant clouds in the Texas sky. I often joined the kids in the back, where we did thumb-and-toe wrestle. With well-known mountains ahead, my husband told the children the past legends of them. 'Arizona is not as boring as Texas,' our son declared.

I hope the trip gave kids some lazy, unstructured time to learn something about valuing the trip instead of looking for the fastest way to burn it up. I don't always make the right call as a parent but I know that in banning the small screen we made the right choice this time.

【1】Why did the author choose a high-tech free journey?

A.Her friends are highly against it.

    B.She disliked advanced technology.

C.She feared the passive influence of mini-screens.

D.The researchers proved the harm of modern technology.

【2】What happened during the cross-country drive?

A.Their son got worse at boredom.

B.Her kids had a tough time riding in the vehicle.

C.Their son relieved himself by watching animals outside.

D.The time spent without screens strengthened the family bond.

【3】The underlined part 'the fastest way' in the last paragraph refers to .

A.the speediest route to finish the journey

B.the ability to observe the surroundings

C.the interest of playing games with others

D.the choice of killing time by playing digital devices

【4】Which is the best title for the text?

A.Is Driving Long Distances Good for Children?

B.A Touching Cross-country Trip of My Family

C.What's Wrong with Boredom without High-tech?

D.Creative Kids out of Parents' Reasonable Choice

  • 24、As a young girl growing up in France, Sarah Toumi dreamed of becoming a leader who could make the world a better place. Her passion to help others was awakened when, from the age of nine, she accompanied her Tunisian father to his birthplace in the east of the country during holidays. There she organized homework clubs and activities for children. Toumi witnessed first-hand the destructive effect of desertification. “Within 10 years rich farmers became worse off, and in 10 years from now they will be poor. I wanted to stop the Sahara Desert in its tracks.” A decrease in average rainfall and an increase in the severity of droughts (干旱) have led to an estimated 75 percent of Tunisia’s agricultural lands being threatened by desertification.

Toumi recognized that farming practices needed to change. She is confident that small land areas can bring large returns if farmers are able to adapt by planting sustainable crops, using new technologies for water treatment and focusing on natural products and fertilizers (肥料) rather than chemicals.

In 2012, Toumi consolidated her dream to fight the desert. She moved to Tunisia, and set up a programme named Acacias for All to put her sustainable farming philosophy into action. “I want to show young people in rural areas that they can create opportunities where they are. Nobody is better able to understand the impact of desertification and climate change than somebody who is living with no access to water.”

By September 2016, more than 130, 000 acacia trees had been planted on 20 pilot farms, with farmers recording a 60 percent survival rate. Toumi estimates that some 3 million acacia trees are needed to protect Tunisia’s farmland. She expects to plant 1 million trees by 2018. In the next couple of years, Toumi hopes to extend the programme to Algeria and Morocco.

【1】How did Toumi’s holiday trips to Tunisia influence her?

A.They made her decide to leave the country.

B.They helped her better understand her father.

C.They fired her enthusiasm for helping others.

D.They destroyed her dream of being a teacher.

【2】What is the main cause of the desertification of Tunisia’s farmland?

    A.Low rainfall.

    B.Soil pollution.

    C.Cold weather.

    D.Forest damage.

【3】Why did Toumi set up Acacias for All in Tunisia?

A.To create job opportunities for young people.

B.To help the children obtain a basic education.

C.To persuade the farmers not to use fertilizers.

D.To facilitate the protection of their farmland.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.Saving Water in Tunisia

    B.Planting Trees of Native Species

    C.Holding back the Sahara

    D.Fighting Poverty in North Africa

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Ollie Simmons was good at maths, but Ruby Riley wasn’t. Well, Ruby didn’t think she was. She sat next to Ollie and so she just copied him. This was the best way she had found to do maths and she didn’t have to think at all.

One day the teacher said, “We will be having a maths test after lunch.” Ruby felt there was a moth moving its wings inside her. “Can I copy off you?” she whispered to Ollie. Ollie thought for a minute. “What will you give me?” he whispered back. Ruby showed Ollie a stone she had. It was round and smooth and the colour of the sea. “OK!” he said, “Give me the stone, and then you can copy me.” Ollie Simmons got one hundred percent in the maths test and so did Ruby. Their names went on the top of the maths champs chart.

Every week there was a maths test and every week Ollie Simmons and Ruby Riley got one hundred percent. Ollie had to share the top place with Ruby, but it was worth it. He had a torch, a key chain, a golf ball and a gift box!

One day, there was a maths test again. This time, Ruby picked a watch, thinking everything would go as usual—Ollie would let her copy and they would go on the top of the chart together again. But she was wrong. The headmaster came into Ruby’s class. “I want to see Ollie Simmons,” she said. Ollie was gone for a long time. Then the door opened. It was the headmaster again. “Ruby Riley,” she said, “Come with me, please.” Ruby felt like a bird in a cage—there was no way to escape. The headmaster told Ruby that every lunchtime for five weeks she had to do maths. “You have to learn to think for yourself,” she said. “And Ollie has to learn a lesson, too. He’s going to teach you.”
