21、As the family of 16 Asian elephants started moving north, no one knew where they were heading, or why. At first, no one thought much about it. Elephants sometimes disappear beyond Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve in southwestern China’s Yunnan Province, but they always return.
【1】. During 16 months the elephants walked 300 miles north to Kunming, the provincial capital of Yunnan Province. Along the way, they robbed the crops and blocked the traffic, causing about a half million dollars in damage, and there was the risk of an elephant attacking a curious onlooker. 【2】. The simple answer would be to calm the giant mammals and transport them back to the reserve.
But that would be risky for this group, especially for the three baby elephants. Instead, officials mobilized (动员) an emergency task force to keep everyone, elephants and humans alike, safe. Drones tracked the elephants’ every move. Electric fences, road barriers, and new pathways helped them move toward safer routes. Tons of corn, pineapples, and bananas were used to trick them away from towns. 【3】.
Some might argue that doing so much to keep a family of elephants safe was wasteful. But conserving our natural and human heritage is about encouraging good in the world. 【4】, just as we need health and peace. 22、"Developed and developing nations can learn from each other seeking a low-carbon economy. In terms of energy saving and green economy, China doesn't lag behind developed nations," said Zhou Changyi, director of the energy saving department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
"While we can learn many aspects from developed nations, they also should learn something from us, such as water conservation," Zhou said in a speech during the new Path of China's Industrialization forum at the ongoing China International Industry Fair.
He said industrialized nations and China are dealing with different issues to fight climate change. The United Kingdom, for example, is concerned about transport, buildings and new energy in reducing carbon emissions. For China, the most urgent task is how to realize new type of industrialization and avoid mistakes that other countries made when they industrialized.
Swiss power and automation technology group ABB called for a stronger focus on product life-cycle assessment, or LCA, which is used to study the environmental impact of a product from the research and manufacturing stage through its usage and recycling.
Tobias Becker, head of ABB' s process automation division for North Asia and China, said LCA is an effective tool in helping manufacturing industries to reduce carbon emissions.
LCA shows that industrial customers should focus on a product's environmental impact throughout its life-cycle instead of on its initial investment.
Richard Hausmann, North East Asia CEO of Siemens, said, "The color of future industrialization is green. "
The Germany company recently announces that it wants to receive orders worth more than 6 billion Euros ( US 8. 8 billion) for intelligent power networks, Smart Grid, over the next five years. Siemens has set a 20 percent market share target for the global smart grid business.
A smart grid delivers electricity from suppliers to consumers using digital technology, advanced sensors specialized computers that save energy, reduce costs and increase reliability. The United States and China are considered the two biggest markets for smart grid.

23、Every May, the capital of Canada,Ottawa will host the world’s largest tulip (郁金香) festival, flowers of amazing colors attracting more than 500,000 tourists to come and see. And in the back of this colorful festival is a moving story about friendship and peace.
During World War II, the Dutch royal family came to Canada to seek asylum. In early 1943, Princess Juliana of nine-month pregnancy was about to give birth, which posed a problem to both Canada and Netherlands.According to Canadian law, all babies born in Canada will automatically become Canadian citizens;and according to the Dutch royal succession law, prince or princess must be born on Netherlands soil in order to be recognized as a royal member. Because of this situation, the Canadian government passed a special bill. They placed the sovereignty (主权) of a maternity ward (妇产科病房) in Ottawa Civic Hospital under the Government of the Netherlands. In January19, 1943, Princess Juliana gave birth to her third daughter Margaret on“Dutch land“.
In May 1945, with the help of the Canadian Forces, Netherlands gained its victory and liberation, and the royal family returned to their homeland after several years of separation. That fall, the Dutch government presented one hundred thousand tulip bulbs to Canada to express their respect and gratitude. The following year, Princess Juliana presented twenty thousand tulip bulbs again in her own name, and requested them to be planted on the land of Ottawa Civic Hospital. And since then, Ottawa, the Canadian capital, have received thousands of tulip bulbs from the Netherlands royal family every year. To acknowledge this kindness, the first Ottawa Tulip Festival was held in 1953. And in 2002, Princess Margaret, who was born in the“Dutch delivery room”, returned to Ottawa to attend the 50th Tulip Festival.
This year’s Canadian Tulip Festival will last for 12 days (May 12 to 23). There will be over one million tulips of different colors and species blooming to their most beautiful hues (色调色彩). 24、 I believe that my actions show my beliefs, not my words.
I wrote a letter to my kids a few years ago. It’s three pages long, and it sums up my life experience of four decades. By the time they reach adulthood, they will have heard most of their father’s advice in that letter: live in the moment, do not attach yourself to physical things, treat others the way you would like to be treated, etc. I sealed the letter in a white envelope, and wrote instructions that nobody should open it unless something horrible happened to me.
As a police officer, I have seen life disappear in an instant. I realize that could happen to me at any time. Yet knowing that letter is there in my locker makes me more comfortable with my own death.
Every day, when I open my locker, I see the letter. It makes me aware that I should be careful at work, and show my children and the people I have connection with that I try to practice everything I have written. If that day comes and my children finally read the letter, I hope that because of my actions, they will take my written beliefs to heart and improve upon my example.
But for me, it’s not enough to write down my beliefs. I try to be the best person I can be every day---even in very difficult circumstances. I am more successful some days than others, but sometimes I curse too much. Sometimes I am cynical, unwilling to believe that people have good and honest reasons for doing something. I also get stressed and upset, yelling at my kids sometimes, and sometimes I am not as loving or as sympathetic as I should be. In fact, I am far from perfect, but I hope my children will eventually realize that perfection is an illusion. What really matters is that, instead of just writing down our beliefs, we all take action to be the best humans we can be.
【1】Which of the following can best describe the author?

A.The author was in his forties when writing it.
B.The kids were too young to understand the tips in it.

A.Doubtful about others’ motivations.
