二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Sonoma County is adding artificial intelligence to its wildfire fighting. The county has entered into an agreement with the South Korean firm Alchera to equip its network of fire-spotting cameras with software that detects wildfire activity and then issues a warning to authorities.

The technology examines past and current images of terrain (地形;地势) and searches for certain changes, such as flames burning in darkness, said Chris Godley, the county’s director of emergency management. But emergency workers will first have to“teach”the system to distinguish between images that show fire smoke, and others that might show clouds, fog etc. The software will use feedback from humans to improve its algorithm(算法) and will eventually be able to detect fires on its own — or at least that’s what county officials hope.

“It’s kind of like learning how to read,” Godley said. “What letters can I put together to make up a word?” The county activated the technology Wednesday and received 16 positive reports of smoke — all of which turned out to be permitted burns, he said. Once a seasonal ban on controlled burns goes into effect in April or May, the county plans to speed up the testing and feedback phase. The hope is that by November, the system will no longer need to be taught and can start providing reliable intelligence. Godley said. “It’s going to take us a while to make sure we get the bugs out and that we really can depend on it because ultimately this is a lifesaving mission.”

The technology is intended to help officials investigate potential fire starts earlier so they can get personnel out to them more quickly and issue necessary warnings. Officials expect other places will adopt it if the technology is successful, particularly because it plugs into the camera network that’s already in place statewide.

“We ultimately believe its potential could be realized in a year or two,” Godley said. “And it could really have a dramatic impact here in California.”

【1】What does the system first have to do before being put into work?

A.Equip its network of fire-spotting cameras with software.

B.Learn to tell between images of fire smoke and other pictures.

C.Use feedbacks to improve its ability to detect fire independently.

D.Examine images of the terrain and search for any possible changes.

【2】What do local officials expect the technology to accomplish?

A.Be able to make positive reports of smoke.

B.Be able to control seasonal burns in the area.

C.Help them spot potential fire starts as soon as possible.

D.Learn how to distinguish pictures of flames from clouds.

【3】What does the underlined part in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.kill all the bugs.

    B.get rid of mistakes

    C.provide reliable information

    D.speed up testing process

【4】What does the author mainly intend to tell us?

A.AI is creating a dramatic impact in California.

B.AI is applied to monitor terrains in California.

C.A new tool to help detect wildfire in California.

D.A new way to put an end to wildfire in California.

  • 22、   Ever noticed how when a big group sings “Happy Birthday,” the beginning is a terrible mess, with everyone singing a slightly different pitch (音调)? But then, near the end, it all sort of comes together?

That’s because we tend to adjust our own singing pitch to accommodate others. And now scientists in the U. K. have found that even trained choral singers will follow their fellow choir members. But not necessarily in the right direction.

The researchers had eight pairs of musically trained amateur singers—all women for this study—sing, a capella (无伴奏合唱), the melody of either “Silent Night” or another classic choir tune, “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded.”

Individual volunteers all sang in their own studios, in four different situations: each singer was completely isolated, hearing only themselves; or singer one got to hear singer two(left ear solo); or singer two got to hear singer one (right ear solo); or finally, both singers could hear each other (stereo harmony). Then the researchers used software to collect pitch information from the recordings.

What they found was that singers stayed more on tune with the pitch written in the musical score when singing solo, versus singing with a partner. And when one partner veered (突然转向) off pitch, the other singer followed her, perhaps to compensate for the error—meaning even though they weren’t singing the pitch as written, the resulting duet (二重唱) was more harmonious. The findings are in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America.

The results support a common practice in choirs: put weak singers next to strong ones, so they can follow their pitch. As for the rest of us amateurs, if you find yourself out at karaoke chorusing with an off-pitch friend, take this advice from study author Jiajie Dai of Queen Mary University of London:

You have to listen to yourself more than you listen to others. Trust yourself, never depend on others. This guideline appears to be the key… to staying on key.

【1】What did scientists in the U. K. find in the research?

A.It is impossible for a big group to sing the same pitch.

B.Trained singers occasionally make mistakes when singing.

C.Singers often follow their partners to sing harmoniously.

D.Singers tend to correct the tune sung by their partners.

【2】What does the underlined word “isolated” probably mean?

    A.Separate.

    B.Unmusical.

    C.Ignoring others.

    D.In the loudest voice.

【3】According to Jiajie Dai, what should we do when singing?

    A.Focus on our own voice.

B.Rely on our partners to sing in tune.

C.Never chorus with an off-pitch person.

D.Sing with strong singers to compensate for errors.

【4】What’s the best title for the text?

A.How can we sing in harmony?

    B.Sing solo for higher accuracy

C.Trust yourself to be a good singer

    D.Common practice in choirs

The Woolly Monkey Mysteries: The Quest to Save a Rain Forest Species

By Sandra Markle. Ages 8 to 10.

Woolly Monkeys spend most of their time high up in 150-foot-tall trees. That makes them difficult animals to count and to study. But cameras have provided valuable information and taken, as this book shows, amazing pictures. Experts now believe that Peru’s lowland monkeys and the waste they produce are necessary to the survival of the rain forest.

Camp Panda: Helping Cubs Return to the Wild

By Catherine Thimmesh. Ages 10 to 12.

The giant panda is much-beloved in China, but in the past 40 years, at least half of its places have been destroyed. Camp Panda tells about efforts to reintroduce the giant pandas into the wild so that they might have a future. As part of the efforts, people wear panda costumes that smell like pandas while weighing and measuring the young pandas. They aren’t supposed to get used to seeing and being around people, because people could bring a threat to them in the wild.

Beyond Words: What Elephants and Whales Think and Feel

By Carl Safina. Ages 10 and older.

He learned about their strong family bonds, the surprising ways they communicate and how they play and hang out with ome another. This book makes a strong case for protecting the ability of these animals to live freely.

Back from the Brink: Saving Animals from Extinction

By Nancy F. Castaldo. Ages 10 and older.

This book focuses on seven groups of animals—including whooping cranes, California condors and American alligators—that were brought back to healthy numbers by a lot of efforts.
