二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、According to a new study, “prosocial (亲社会的) spending” may be as good for your blood pressure as a healthy diet and exercise. The majority of us believe that the way to become happier and healthier is by spending money on ourselves. We put in extra hours at work and save up money to be able to buy the things that we believe will bring us happiness. But what if spending money on ourselves isn’t the best way to become happier?

Past research has shown that when we spend money on others, we actually experience greater well-being than if we were to spend that money on ourselves. Could something as simple as buying a friend dinner or donating to charity improve our health, too — and if so, how? According to a paper published this February in the journal Health Psychology, it can — and one way it works is by lowering blood pressure.

In an initial study, researchers looked at the relationship between giving money to others(or “prosocial spending”) and blood pressure, a simple measure of cardiovascular (心血管的) health. One hundred eighty-six adults with high blood pressure were asked to report how much money they spent on charities, and then followed up with two years later. By then, the participants who had originally spent the most on charities had lower blood pressure than participants who had spent less money. This association held even after accounting for the effects of income, education level, and age.

Why does prosocial spending have these benefits? One possibility is that it increases how socially connected we feel. Feeling closer to the people we help can improve our relationships with others, which have a large impact on our health.

When we give our money and time to others, research suggests, even giving small amounts of money can be beneficial, and we end up gaining something as a result: We experience increases in health and happiness. In particular, giving to others may help build up our relationships and develop resilience (适应力) in the face of stress.

【1】What is most people’s view on how to get happier according to the text?

    A.By working extra hours.

    B.By spending money on themselves.

    C.By donating money to charities.

    D.By keeping a healthy diet.

【2】What can we learn from paragraph 3?

A.Giving money to others can measure cardiovascular health.

B.Prosocial spending reduces the negative health effects of stress.

C.Happiness comes from leading a life full of purpose and meaning.

D.The participants spending the most on charities had lower blood pressure.

【3】What may the researchers disagree with about the benefits of prosocial spending?

A.It leads to more promotion in career.

B.It increases our health and happiness.

    C.It strengthens relationships with others.

D.It develops resilience in the face of stress.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.How Can We Maximize the Health Benefits of Giving?

B.The More Money We Spend on Others, the Happier and Healthier We Are

C.Spending Money on Others Can Lower Your Blood Pressure

D.Why Does Spending Money on Ourselves Make Us Much Healthier?

  • 22、   Saving Mr. Banks (2013) ★★★

    BBC One, 10:30 p.m.

John Lee Hancock’s film unapologetically tells the Disney side of the twisted making of Mary Poppins. It presents Walt Disney’s (by Tom Hanks) struggle with PL Travers (by Emma Thompson), who wrote the original books, as a kind of Norman Conquest of charm over a brilliant but unhappy writer. The sugar-to-medicine rate is 15 parts to one, but there’s nothing wrong with true sweetness.

    The Dark Mirror (1946, b/w) ★ ★ ★

    BBC Two, 8:05 p. m.

Olivia de Havilland, one of the last surviving stars of golden-age Hollywood cinema, died last month, so this film makes for a sad rewatch. It’s an old-fashioned thriller in which psychiatrist (精神病医生) Lew Ayres has to decide which identical twin ( both played by de Havilland) has committed a murder. The entire story is somewhat unrealistic but de Havilland fully shows her acting skills. Robert Siodmak directs.

    Jonathan Edwards: One Giant Leap ★ ★ ★ ★

    BBC Two, 8:30 p.m.

Twenty-five years ago, medals for British athletes were very rare indeed. The 1995 World Athletics Championships brought just one gold for the UK, for triple-jumper Jonathan Edwards, whose world record leap (跳) of 18. 29 m stood for two decades. This film tells a story of pressure, faith and positive thinking.

    The Stanford Prison Experiment (2015) ★ ★ ★ ★

    ITV4, 9:55 p.m.

In the famous college experiment of the title, a psychology professor set up a make-believe prison and randomly assigned students to be either prisoners or guards to study the effects of unearned authority. The frightening results are captured (捕获) in Kyle Patrick Alvarez’s recreation. Ezra Miller plays a prisoner abused by the guards, while Billy Crudup is excellent as the unknowable professor.

    【1】Who is Olivia de Havilland?

    A.A detective.

    B.A murder.

    C.An actor.

    D.A psychiatrist.

【2】Which film can inspire the audience?

    A.Saving Mr. Banks.

    B.The Dark Mirror.

    C.The Stanford Prison Experiment.

    D.Jonathan Edwards: One Giant Leap.

【3】What do the four films have in common?

    A.They are night programs.

B.They are all rated 4-star films.

C.They are films by the same director.

D.They are shown on the same channel.

  • 23、   When Naomi Fisher took her eight-year-old son to the country park in Birmingham where she spent much of her childhood exploring with her friends, he asked why he was not allowed to go off by himself.

“I couldn’t even give a good reason why not. It’s just not done any more, nobody lets their kids do that,” said Fisher, a community architect. “I had some conversations and it seemed my generation had all experienced that kind of play from seven or eight years old and yet it had virtually disappeared.”

Fisher’s experience is not uncommon. A survey published this week reported that children typically are not allowed to play outside on their own until two years older than their parents’ generation were.

Soon after, with the help of her friend, they set up Roam, a first of its kind charity running sessions to help children with safe, unsupervised (无人监督的) play outside. At each session, up to 15 children, all under-12s, are given some ground rules-they must stay in groups of at least three at all times, for instance-before being allowed to roam (玩耍) alone for up to two hours.

Volunteers keep tabs on them and count numbers on a regular basis, but do not interfere. They also run sessions with more supervision for younger children and those with additional needs. “A lot of our families have said they’ve seen that their children’s capabilities are much better than they thought,” said Fisher.

When Roam surveyed parents, it found that although road danger and safety fears were a key reason behind why many did not let their children play alone. “The more important reason was that parents felt their child would stand out and their parenting would be judged,” said Fisher. “My biggest fear at the pilot sessions was that a member of the public might approach the children and say: ‘You’re way too young to be your own.’”

【1】What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.Parents giving a good reason.

B.Children playing outside on their own.

    C.Children exploring with their parents.

    D.Parents communicating with their children.

【2】What do we know about Roam?

    A.It offers children academic sessions.

B.It disciplines children to stay inside.

C.It helps children display better abilities.

D.It involves more supervision for older kids.

【3】Why do many parents refuse to let their children play alone?

A.They feel their children are too outstanding.

    B.They worry about children’s incompetence.

C.They fear negative judgment on their parenting.

D.They believe their children will break traffic laws.

【4】What is the passage mainly about?

A.How a community architect manages to found a charity.

B.What children’s independent play means to their health.

C.What parents should do to let go of their parenting plan.

D.How a charity helps children gain the right to play alone.
