  • 21、A ground-based system that uses much stronger signals than GPS can find your location in cities and indoors. It is a new positioning system that could compete with GPS to make sure you never lose your directions again.

Instead of satellites, Locata uses ground-based equipment to send a radio signal over a localized area that is a million times stronger on arrival than GPS. It can work indoors as well as outdoors, and the makers claim that the receivers can be shrunk(缩小) to fit inside a regular cell phone. Even the US armies, which invented GPS technology, signed a file last month agreeing to a test of Locata at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.

“This is one of the most important technology developments for the future of the positioning industry,” says Nunzio Gambale, CEO and co-founder of the firm Locata, based in Griffith, Australia.

As for the Locata’s correctness, Christopher Morin of the US Air Force tested it recently at White Sands, and it worked to within 18cm along any axis(轴). Morin said it should be possible to get the exactitude down to 5cm.

The tests were performed in an open desert where GPS also worked beautifully, but its signal was weak—like a car headlight from 20,000 kilometers away—and easily cut off by solid objects(实心的物体). Locata’s signal was far stronger, though not guaranteed to work in a complex urban environment, said David, speaker of the UK’ s General Lighthouse Authorities.

Locata’s technology will face competition in the race to transform indoor navigation. But it could shine in specific areas, Gambale said. Robots with Locata could easily navigate inside buildings without the complex optical(视觉的) systems they need at the moment. And the process that handles correct location data could not only guide you around a mall, railway station or airport, but also take you to the exact shelf in a shop for the product you want. It would be small and cheap enough for smart phones and it should be available within five years—a similar path to the one GPS took on its way towards the world, he said.

【1】The passage is written mainly to ______.

    A. encourage people to buy the Locata

    B. tell us the disadvantages of the GPS

    C. introduce a new positioning system Locata

    D. tell us that Locata will replace GPS one day

【2】Which of the following is NOT true about Locata?

    A. Without the help of the satellites, Locata can tell you where you are.

    B. Locata will be popular with most people even including the US armies.

    C. Locata has a better signal than GPS in some bad environments.

    D. In five years, Locata will take the place of GPS.

    【3】According to the passage, Gambale______.

    A. did the experiment at White Sands last month

    B. believed the Locata would help to develop smart robots’ creation

    C. doubted whether Locata can work in a complex environment or not

    D. was worried about the competition the Locata faced

【4】Which of the following can replace the underlined word “exactitude” in Paragraph 4?

    A. Accuracy.    B. Speed.

    C. Determination    D. Length

【5】What can we know from the passage?

    A. Locata is as small as a cell phone.

    B. GPS is the most practical position system at present.

    C. Locata will tell you how to get what you want in the future.

    D. Locata will enter our lives through the cell phone, just like GPS.

  • 22、   Jellyfish are unusual creatures. They’re neither fish nor jelly. Some are among the most colourful creatures in the world, but it’s best to look but not touch these invertebrates(无脊椎动物). Not only are they very fragile creatures, but many give a painful sting, and some are even deadly. Whether you admire them in an aquarium or try to avoid them in the wild, you won’t be able to get these fascinating jellyfish facts out of your head.

Here’s a jellyfish fact that might come in handy: There are several names for a group of jellyfish. They include smack, bloom, and swarm. Choose the word you prefer depending on whether you think the jellyfish pack looks like a garden of blooming flowers or more like a frightening pack of stingers, and whether you’re admiring them at an aquarium or if you and your fellow snorkelers are surrounded.

Jellyfish have two main forms in their life cycle that look quite different from each other. Scientific American explains that an adult jellyfish, called a medusa, has a bell-shaped body with tentacles(触须)flowing down below it. Young jellyfish, called polyps, look more like sea anemones, with shorter tentacles that flow up above the main body. Medusas reproduce by releasing eggs.

Melanie Roberts, Senior Aquarist at SeaWorld Orlando, says that the largest jellyfish in the world is a lion’s mane jellyfish. The body of this beautiful orange jelly can grow up to three feet in diameter. With its 12,000 tentacles that can grow 120 feet long, Oceana.org adds that the lion’s mane jelly compares in size to the planet’s largest animal: the blue whale.

Regardless of their size, jellyfish are mostly made of water. In fact, they’re about 95 per cent water. These creatures don’t have brains, blood, or bones. And most jellyfish don’t have eyes. Jellyfish also use their mouths both for eating and for waste removal.

    1Why can’t we touch jellyfish?

    A.Because they may be stung.

    B.Because they may die easily.

    C.Because they may feel painful.

    D.Because they may hurt people.

    2What are jellyfish named after?

    A.Its size. B.Its color.

    C.Its appearance. D.Its lifestyle.

3What can we learn from the passage?

A.Mouth is an important organ for jellyfish.

B.Polyps can clone themselves by laying eggs.

C.The largest jellyfish in the world is 120 feet long.

D.Medusas have tentacles flowing up above the body.

4What can be the best title of the passage?

    A.Several facts about jellyfish.

B.The two main forms of jellyfish.

C.Jellyfish are neither fish nor jelly.

    D.Jellyfish have many different names.

  • 23、In the book The Best Little Girl in the World, Kessa has a serious eating disorder (进食障碍) called anorexia nervosa. But she is not alone. Many people have this eating disorder.

  • 24、   London-based artist Sarah Ezekiel has won international recognition for her vivid, life-filling images. But her work is more remarkable for the fact that she has a medical condition that has left her unable to move her arms.

Ezekiel’s pictures are painstakingly produced, using the movement of her eyes and specialized technology that relays those movements to a computer. The eye-tracking technology gives Ezekiel a platform for artistic expression, otherwise denied by her disease—amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS).

Ezekiel showed no signs of the condition until 2000, when she was aged 34. Pregnant with her second child, she noticed some weakness in her left arm and that she was unable to produce each word clearly. Within months, she was diagnosed with incurable ALS.

Ezekiel describes her first five years living with ALS as “very lonely”. Today, she can neither speak nor move but says “technology has made my life worth living”. She uses a system made by Tobii Dynavox, a company specializing in “Eye Gaze” devices that help people with medical conditions communicate. Its technology adopts projectors, cameras and algorithms to track the tiny movements of the user’s pupils and control a cursor on a screen.

To interview Ezekiel, CNN sent her questions and she prepared her answers letter by letter, using predictive text. The technology also lets her surf the net, shop online and use social media.

Ezekiel, who studied art when she was younger, began painting using the Eye Gaze device in 2012. Her first artwork. Peaceful Warrior, took its title from a book by Dan Millman. “It was originally supposed to illustrate despair, but the finished result had a totally different feel,” she recalls.

“Being an artist because of technology has totally improved my general attitude towards life and opened up many other possibilities for me,” says Ezekiel. I couldn’t create pictures for years and it’s fantastic that technology has made it possible again.

【1】What can we know about Ezekiel’s disease?

A.It inspired her to be a devoted artist.

B.It was totally cured when she was 46.

C.It draws more attention to her works.

D.It stops her from thinking independently.

【2】What does Tobii Dynavox’s system allow Ezekiel to do?

    A.Enjoy her basic online life.

B.Move her body at her own will.

C.Suffer less pain from her disease.

D.Write letters to her baby by hand.

【3】What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph probably refer to?

    A.Drawing pictures.

    B.Staying positive.

    C.Using technology.

    D.Being a special artist.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?
