二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The world is too big to take in all at once. To make sense and beauty of it, you have to look at a small part at a time.

In using a camera, you choose a small part through he view finder. You move the camera, “framing” pictures until you see one that pleases you. Then-click! If you make a good choice, your picture will please others, as well as yourself.

“Wherever you are,” says photographer Ernst Haas, “you are surrounded by pictures. The trick is to recognize them.” His photograph of a twist of barbed wire shows what he means.

Mr. Haas tells us of ways to practice seeing. Make a simple frame of black cardboard. Take it out of the doors and look through it at everyday things, large or small, far away or near.

At first you may see nothing to interest you. But soon pictures seem to leap () at you through the frame. Oil floating on water makes a picture in rainbow colors. Three people on the steps of an old house form a picture that seems to tells a story.

Did you notice such things before you used the frame? Perhaps not. But, with practice, you soon do not need its help. You see things as artists do. Everywhere, shapes and colors catch your eye. Your mind takes “snapshots (快照)” of their patterns. Then, if you wish, you can share what you see by taking a photograph or by making a drawing or a painting.

Sometimes it’s fun to “see small”. Did you ever notice the design of the seeds in sliced bananas? Have you looked deep inside a lily? Or seen the starburst in the center of a wet ice cube?

Do you see colors as they really are? When you paint tree trunks, you would make them brown or black. But tree trunks are really gray, purple, yellow-green—almost any color except brown or black!

Do you notice detail? Doing so can be in many ways. Remembering what you see is often useful, too. Practice can help you.

A trick for helping you to remember detail is the double take. Look—don’t look—then look again.

1What does the underlined word “trick” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A. joke B. magic

    C. habit D. skill

2What does the author want to tell us?

    A. The better you learn to see, the more alive you are.

    B. Walking in the country, you should look closely at the trunks.

    C. A branch with a few leaves fills the frame with a beautiful design.

    D. Close your eyes and try to remember how it looks.

3Which of the fallowing is true according to the text?

    A. When you paint trees, you would make them gray.

    B. Glance at a bill and you remember how it looked.

    C. Seeing is one way of living.

    D. Give a second look and you remember all the detail.

4What is the main idea of the text?

    A. The world is too big to travel around.

    B. Look around—and see!

    C. Wherever you are, a camera is important.

    D. A good way to see is to carry a camera

Scholarship Application Tips in 2018 for college students

    • Before you apply

Work hard to get good grades. Don’t sweat about one bad grade, but always strive to do your best.

Get involved, and stay involved, in out-of-class activities. Sports, clubs, drama, bands and orchestras — these often count toward a student’s overall scholarship application evaluation. The same goes for paid (or unpaid) work experience.

Begin your scholarship research early — by your sophomore or junior year of high school, if possible. Make special note of application deadlines, as they can vary from late summer to late spring.

Apply for as many scholarships as you are eligible for — several smaller scholarships can add up to a lot of money.

    • During the application process

Read the supplementary materials that come with scholarship application forms to better understand the program’s focus (community service, subject interest). Try to answer the questions with the focus area in mind.

Answer questions as they are asked. Don’t go off topic.

If there is a financial section to the application, make sure you get accurate and complete information from all appropriate sources to ensure your eligibility.

Take your time. Write down everything you can think of for each question, then set the application aside for a day so you can look everything over again before you send it off.

Don’t wait until the last minute to complete your application, especially if you are applying online. Computer systems can get blocked with the large volume of applicants hoping to submit their qualifications during the last few days and hours before a deadline.

If a third party has to complete part of your application, such as providing a letter of recommendation, make sure you ask them early on and remind them as often as necessary to ensure they provide you with the necessary materials.

Last but not least, review your application with your parents to make sure you haven’t left out any important details.

Good luck to the students applying for the 2018 scholarship programs!

1Before you apply for a scholarship, it’s best to ______.

    A. pay more attention to grades than to out-of-class activities

    B. focus on only one scholarship application

    C. get as much work experience as possible

    D. begin your preparation as early as possible

2When you are answering questions on the application form, you should ______.

    A. focus on the subject you are interested in

    B. answer to the point

    C. list your advantages

    D. prove your abilities

3The author suggests that applicants should ______.

    A. submit the application in the last few days

    B. double-check their application with their parents

    C. complete and submit the application in one day

    D. avoid submitting the application online

  • 23、   Several months ago I decided it would be wise to investigate the possibilities of buying a life insurance policyif for no other reason than because I understood it might be a good investment. I got the name of an insurance agent from a friend and called the agent to get some information.

From the kinds of questions I put to himthe agent would tell that I knew nothing about insurance so he kindly offered to explore the matter with me in more detail -to help me determine the kind of policy I ought to be considering.

That evening he appeared at my door promptly at 730without wasting time on amenities he spread his papers out on the kitchen table and launched into a lengthy explanation. I listened attentively as he talked about the difference between various types of policiesand he explained the kind of coverage he felt I ought to have because of my age bracket and financial objectives. Toward the end of the evening (after three or four hours of talking),he kindly helped me fill out an application for a 50000 dollar policyand then he asked if I could go to a Dr. Luther's office on Friday for a physical examination.

I don't know whybut it was not until the mention of the doctor's appointment that I realized fully what was happening. I was about to sign a lifetime contract yet I had not really made a decision about whether I wanted to buy the policy or not. As a matter of factthe question of the need for a decision from me one way or the other had not even come up. Suddenly I felt sure that I definitely did not want to buy the policy. However, since he had spent so much time with meI didn't want to make him feel that he had wasted his time. So I invented an excuse about things I had to do on Fridayand I assured him I would call him in a few days. ActuallyI had no intention of going to see Dr. Luther or of calling the agent again. I wanted to forget the whole thing.

It's been over three months now since our meetingand my friendly insurance agent still calls at my office faithfully two or three times a week. My secretary knows that I don't want to talk to himso when he calls she tells him that I'm in a meeting or that I'm out of the office or that I'm away on a business trip. I realize now that it was a mistake not to tell him outright that I'm not interestedand please not to bother me any moreall I can do is to avoid his calls and hope I don't run into him someplace.

1The writer phoned the insurance agent because ______ .

B.He had decided to buy a life insurance policy.

C.He wanted to explore the possibilities of buying a life insurance policy.

2According to the passagethe agent was ______ .

    A.he was afraid of him.

B.he felt embarrassed to do so.

C.he thought it none of the agent's business.

D.he didn't wish to lose the agents friendship.

    D.insurance is but swindle(骗局)

  • 24、   Just as regulation has helped increase fuel efficiency, cut exhaust smokes and introduce anti-slip equipment, so government involvement is needed to get the connected car on the road. It is beginning to happen. Earlier this year, Europe’s standards-setting agencies agreed a common set of agreements for cars and traffic infrastructure (基建) to communicate. Others should follow. Governments should then set firm deadlines for all new cars to be fully connected and capable of matching, and a date for existing cars to be re-improved with a basic locator beacon (定位器) and the ability to receive risky warnings.

If cars are to connect, new infrastructure will have to be built. Roads and parking spaces will need sensors to monitor them; motorways will need specific lanes for matching. But this will not necessarily be expensive. Upgrading traffic signals so they can be controlled remotely by a central traffic management system is a lot cheaper than building new roads.

The sooner these changes are made, and cars are plugged into a smart traffic section, the quicker Singaporean variable pricing — for parking as well as road use — can become the criterion. Motorists will then have the motive, as well as the ability, to avoid the busiest places at the busiest times, and the horrible death that roads take in human lives should start falling.

In the past, more people driving meant more roads, more jams, more death and more smokes. In the future, the connected car could offer mankind the pleasures of the road with rather less of the pain.

1What do governments truly expect of the connected car?

A.It’ll be standard-friendly. B.It’ll get fully prepared soon.

C.It’ll be under command. D.It’ll promote infrastructure.

2What will happen if traffic signals are to upgrade?

A.More sensors are offered by the companies.

B.More special roads are needed by motorists.

C.The whole project is more economical to operate.

D.The whole society is crazier about the new cars.

3Which is most UNLIKELY to benefit from such changes?

    A.Motorists. B.Singaporeans’ pricing.

    C.Road death. D.Traditional traffic sections.

4Which best describes the author’s attitude in the text?

    A.Positive. B.Critical.

    C.Objective. D.Doubtful.
