二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   When I first catch sight of Greta Thunberg, it is eight in the morning, and a small crowd has already gathered. It is a Friday, her day of protest, and the 16-year-old is standing outside the parliament(议会) building, next to a sign saying “School strike for climate” in Swedish.

This is the 26th week of her protest, which has taken place every Friday since school started last August. Her goal is to bring Sweden in line with the 2016 Paris Agreement, which promises to limit global warming to below 2, compared with pre-industrial levels.

Over the past six months, Greta has rocketed to a level of fame and influence that pretty much nobody, including herself, expected. Her protest was quickly highlighted by the media. Then came a TED talk and an invitation to address last December’s U.N. climate talks in Poland.

While Greta may seem an unlikely climate activist, it was not entirely accidental that she became one. Like many children, Greta watched educational films about the melting Arctic and the fate of the polar bears and the marine mammals bloated (肿胀) with plastic. But unlike other children, she couldn’t let them go. “I became very affected. I began thinking about it all the time.” said Greta.

Greta began researching climate change and has been staying on the topic for six years. She has stopped eating meat and buying anything that isn’t necessary. In 2015, Greta stopped flying on airplanes, and a year later, her mother followed her example, giving up an international performing career. The family has started growing their own vegetables on his own garden outside the city. To meet me in central Stockholm, Greta and her father rode their bikes for about half an hour, although the family has an electric car that they use only when necessary.

1What can be inferred from the second paragraph?

A.Industry in Sweden is developing too fast.

B.School climate education remains to be improved.

C.The climate around the world has increased by 2.

D.Sweden should do more to meet the Paris Agreement.

2Why did Greta become the focus of media attention?

A.She was expected to be famous.

B.She was invited to the TED talk.

C.She skipped school for the protest.

D.She was active in the protest as a child.

3What makes Greta devoted to climate activities?

    A.The educational programs.

B.Her speech at U.N. climate talks.

C.Her great concern about climate change.

D.The protest of “School strike for climate”

4What happened after Greta became a climate activist?

    A.She moved to the countryside.

    B.She had an eco-friendly life.

    C.She followed her mother’s example.

D.She gave up her work for her research.

  • 23、CHARITY HONORS SON’S MEMORY

Nonprofit providing gifts to 18 to 39-year-olds is raising memory

    By PAM KRAOEN

RAMONA, Calif. — Before he died from cancer at age 29, Silas River Bennett spent his final months taking photographs of the world around him, emailing friends, buying Christmas gifts for his sisters and encouraging his family to give to the needy. “What was important to him was to have a sense of himself outside of cancer,” said his mom, Lorranie Kerz of Ramona.

Bennett went to the hospital in fall 2007 with severe back pains. He was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer that had spread to his bones. Doctors believed the cancer was environmentally caused, perhaps by exposure to some poisonous gas in the basement where he lived or poisons in the paints he used as a painter.

Kerz said her son was a man with a great sense of humor and a very creative mind. He had an “electric intellect” who loved debating, watching “Jeopardy!” — a game show on TV and telling stories with his photographs. After Bennett died in May 2008, Kerz wanted to honor the creative spirit and generosity of her son, whose nickname was “Sy”. The result was Sy’s Fund, a Romona-based all-volunteer national nonprofit that has fulfilled the wishes of more than 250 people aged 18 to 39 who are battling cancer. Sy’s Fund provides them with small gifts — such as laptops, cameras, guitar lessons, or printers — to lift their spirits and refocus their energies in a positive direction.

The group raises money through three fundraisers each year, such as golf tournaments and 5K races. This year, because of the COVID-19, they’re trying a virtual fundraiser for the first time. After registering online, participants must download the “Let’s Roam” app to their phones to donate. For those who want to apply for a wish grant, visit sysfund.org. The organization is also seeking more volunteer members. For details, email Kerz at lorraine@sysfund.org.

【1】Why did Kerz found Sy’s Fund?

    A.To honour his son.

    B.To get rid of cancer.

    C.To make his son famous.

    D.To gain more profit.

【2】What can we learn about Sy?

A.His cancer was caused by poisonous paints.

B.He spent his final months preparing for the fund.

C.He was energetic and lived a short but colorful life.

D.He died more than one year after he was diagnosed with cancer.

【3】How does Sy’s fund help the needy?

A.By seeking more volunteers to tell stories.

B.By downloading some apps to the phones.

C.By providing cancer patients with small gifts.

D.By selling some things to cancer patients at a low price.

【4】Where is this text most likely from?

  • 24、   Every year a community in some part of the world is destroyed by flooding. Indeed, flooding can happen anywhere it rains. There is hope, however. Architects and civil engineers have developed promising technologies for flood control. And yes, engineering can be beautiful.

    The Thames Barrier in England

The Thames Barrier is the second largest flood defence barrier in the world. Made of steel, water gates on the Thames Barrier are normally left open so ships can pass through. Then, as needed, the water gates shut to stop water flowing through and to keep the Thames River safe. The Thames Barrier  has 10 steel gates. The main gates stand as high as a 5-storey building.  Each main gate weighs 3,300 tonnes. The Thames Barrier gates were constructed between 1974 and 1984 and have been closed to prevent floods more than 100 times.

    Red Sluice Gate in Japan

To protect areas on the coast and along Japan’s rapidly-flowing rivers, the nation’s engineers have developed a complex system of canals and flood-gate locks(水闸). Red Sluice Gate was designed in 1924 by a Japanese architect who also worked on the Panama Canal. It is powered by automated "water-drive" motors. Such motors don’t need electricity to run, so they aren’t affected by power failures that can occur during storms. It contributed greatly to preventing floods until 1982 when a new sluice gate was completed. The Red Sluice Gate was no longer used but remains an impressive sight.

The Hagestein Weir in the Netherlands

Completed in about 1960, the Hagestein Weir is one of three movable dams, along the Rhine River in the Netherlands. The Hagestein Weir has two enormous arched gates to control water and generate power. Spanning 54 meters, the gates are stored in the up position.  Dams and water barriers like Hagestein Weir have become models for water control engineers around the world.

    MOSE in Venice

With its famous canals, Venice, Italy is a well-known watery city. Global warming threatens its very existence. Since the 1980s, officials have been pouring money into the MOSE project, a series of 78 barriers that can rise collectively or independently across the lagoon opening and curtail the rising waters of the Adriatic Sea.

【1】What do we know about the Thames Barrier?

A.It is the largest water barrier in the world.

B.Its water gates are open at a normal time.

C.It took more than 10 years to construct.

D.Its ten water gates weigh 3,300 tonnes.

【2】What is a special feature of Red Sluice Gate in Japan?

    A.It is still in operation.

B.It still works with power cut.

C.It is the most impressive sight.

D.It was designed by an architect from Panama.

【3】What is the common function of the 4 constructions?

    A.To produce electricity.

    B.To advance technology.

    C.To promote tourism.

    D.To control flood.
