22、While astronauts in space get to do many exciting things, they miss out on ordinary things that we all take for granted-being able to walk on firm ground, hanging out with family and digging into a slice of hot steaming pizza. Though not much can be done about the first two things, there may soon be a solution to the third one, thanks to this cool 3-D pizza printer!
About a year ago, NASA offered $125,000 to Anjan Contractor, a 3-D technology expert, to build a device(设备)that would allow astronauts to make pizza on demand. The mechanical engineer promised that his invention would produce pies in large quantities that looked, tasted and even smelled like pizza made in common ovens.
Late last year, the engineer presented a video of his first prototype(原型)that begins by creating a single slice of dough(面团)that is cooked and printed at the same time. Then comes the tomato “sauce” —a mix of tomato powder, oil and water and finally, a protein slice that resembles cheese. While the video doesn’t show the baking process, the inventor says that once the pizza is printed, it can be ready to be consumed in 7 seconds.
While the pie in the video looks delicious enough to attract any pizza lover, Anjan Contractor is far from ready for astronauts. That’s because he still has to find a solution to make the food container in the printer last for 30 years. Though that may sound unrealistic, actually it is not.
Anjan Contractor believes that the only way that is possible is that the water is removed from all the ingredients(配料)and then they are reduced to the powder form. This, as you can imagine, will not be so easy. But, while the printer may not be ready for space, it certainly looks ready enough for people on earth. Hopefully, NASA and Contractor will consider selling it to those not fortunate enough to go to Mars!
【1】Why does the author mention the things that astronauts in space cannot do?
A.To ask us not to take common things for granted.
B.To show they live a difficult life there.
C.To show their life is boring in space.
D.To introduce the topic of the text.
【2】NASA offered $125,000 to Anjan Contractor mainly to __________.
A.create some new type of 3-D printer
B.attract more companies to work for NASA
C.help astronauts in space enjoy fresh pizza one day
D.produce pizza in large quantities to earn great profits
【3】The biggest challenge that Anjan Contractor is faced with now is probably that __________.
A.he has no money left to go on with his research
B.the pizza doesn’t seem appetizing to pizza lovers
C.he has no way to make pizza that can last for thirty years
D.he cannot make the food container last for decades
【4】What’s the best title of the passage?
A.NASA is trying its best to help astronauts eat better
B.Astronauts may soon be able to enjoy steaming hot pizza
C.NASA is working on making pizza for common people
D.A 3-D pizza printer has been used to make pizza
23、A letter written to a 12-year-old girl in Lithuania was delivered in December, almost 51 years after it was sent.
Now in her 60s, Genovefa Klonovska said after being handed the letter, “I thought that someone was pranking me.” The letter included a handmade, colored rose and two paper dolls. It was sent to Klonovska by a young girl in Poland. They exchanged letters in what is known as a pen pal program — when people write letters to each other without actually meeting.
The letter, together with 17 others, was discovered this past summer when a wall was taken down in a former post office in Vilnius.
The letters, from the late 1960s and early 1970s, were likely hidden by a postal worker after he searched them for money or valuables, Vilutis said. The senders were family members or pen pals from places such as Australia, Poland, or Russia. Street names and their numbering have changed in Vilnius, capital of Lithuania. Post office workers spent months looking for the people who were supposed to receive the letters — the recipients. Only five recipients were found. In several cases, children of dead recipients were handed a lost letter.
Deimante Zebrauskaite, head of Lithuania Post, said we felt a moral duty to do this. Zebrauskaite added, “One lady compared the experience to receiving a message from a bottle thrown into sea. People were emotional (动情的). Some people felt they saw a part of daily life of their dead parents.”
In the letter to Klonovska, sent from Koczary in Poland, a girl named Ewa complains buses no longer reach her village. Now in her 60s, Klonovska has no memory of Ewa. She probably wrote Ewa after finding her address in an advertisement for pen-pals in a newspaper. Their relationship stopped after the letter was not delivered. “The loss was not life-changing,” said Klonovska. She then asked, “What if they delivered a lost letter from a suitor (求婚者) to his love, and their wedding never happened?”
【1】The word “pranking” in paragraph 2 means ______.
A.playing a trick on
B.paying attention to
C.finding fault with
D.getting in touch with
【2】Why were some people emotional when they received the letters?
A.The arrival of the lost letters had been long expected.
B.They knew more about their parents through the letters.
C.A postal worker hid the letters for a selfish purpose.
D.Postal workers overcame difficulties to find the recipients.
【3】What did Klonovska try to express in the last paragraph?
A.All these letters were important reminders of memories.
B.She didn’t mind if the post office gave her the letter.
C.The course of her life would never change for the lost letter.
D.The lost letters could have caused serious consequences.
24、 The alarm sounds. Students swing their backpack over their shoulder, board the school bus, make their way to their homeroom and the bell rings— school is back. But for more homes in America, school looks more like students waking up, making their way to the dining room or home office, setting up laptops and learning in the comfort of home.
Virtual(虚拟的)schooling, described as “a public school that offers only instruction in which students and teachers are separated by time and/or place, and interaction occurs via computers and/or telecommunications(电信)technologies”, has increased over the past decade. According to the National Education Policy Center, enrollments(注册人数)in virtual schools was 278,518 between the 2015 — 2016 school year and the 2016 — 2017 school year increased by 17,000.
For Arizona Virtual Academy, a full-time online public K-12 school, they use K12 Inc. curriculums. K12 Inc. serves students in all 50 states and more than 100 countries with digital learning platforms and technology, providing online education. “We always are improving our platforms and the technology that we use to make sure that we’re keeping up with the changing trends, not only with education but also with technology,” Dr. Kelly Van Sande said. Another piece of new technology they’ve rolled out is a new app where parents can find virtual schools available in their area.
Carrie Faulkner chose to enroll two of her children in Arizona Virtual Academy. She says they’ve done schooling online in Chicago, in California, at restaurants and on her cousin’s floor in Kansas. “It doesn’t matter whether he (her son) is on the couch, in his bed or at the kitchen table, he can do schooling wherever he wants to,” Faulkner said. “I wish they had it for me back when I was in school.
