二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Ride-hailing apps and robot cars promise to change how we get around and the effects are already being felt. Traffic in New York is slowing down. Jams are common in Manhattan, especially in its business districts. Daytime traffic in the busiest areas now moves almost 20% more slowly than it did five years ago.

It seems a place ripe for wide use of ride-hailing apps that, you might think, would reduce some of the jams. However, those apps appear to be making things worse as traffic has slowed in line with the growing popularity of apps such as Uber and Lyft, a study by transport expert Bruce Schaller suggests.

Over the four years of the study, the number of cars in Manhattan seeking ride-hailing fares increased by 81%. There are now about 68,000 ride-sharing drivers across New York. That’s about five times the number of the yellow cabs licensed to operate there, he found. There are so many drivers, his work suggests, who spend about 45% of their spare time just touring for fares. That is a lot of unused cars blocking a lot of busy streets.

Simple physics explains why ride-sharing vehicles are causing, not curing jams, said Jarrett Walker, a public transport policy expert who has advised hundreds of cities about moving people.

“Lots of people are deciding that, ’Oh, public transport is just too much trouble this morning,’ or whenever, which causes a shift from it,” he told the BBC. “That means moving people from larger vehicles into smaller ones, which means more vehicles to move the same people. Therefore, more traffic.”

Data gathered about ride-sharing drivers illustrates how they contribute to congestion(塞车), said Prof. Christo Wilson, a computer scientist at Northeastern University who has studied the services. “You can look at the traffic pattern for the Uber vehicles and it perfectly matches the peaks for the rush hour and the peak time of a day,” he said. They are out there in force at the worst possible times.

1What can we know about the cabs in New York?

    A. More cabs are needed to meet the demand.

    B. They often tour around the city seeking users.

    C. Their fares increased greatly over the four years.

    D. The number of them is far less than ride-sharing cars.

2What is Christo Wilson’s attitude toward ride-sharing practice?

    A. Neutral B. Negative

    C. Indifferent D. Supportive

3Which of the following best replaces “it” underlined in Paragraph 5.

    A. A jam. B. Public transport

    C. A car. D. A ride-sharing vehicle.

4What is the best title for the text?

    A. Worse Road Jams. B. App Makes Terrible Jams.

    C. Efforts Needed for Traffic. D. Technology Counts in Future.

  • 22、Plants and exposure to greenery have been found to have mental health benefits and like any new skill or hobby, taking care of houseplants comes with difficulty. Anyone starting to care for plants should be patient and allow themselves time to learn the basics. Here are several plants recommended for giving mental health benefits:

    Snake Plant

These popular indoor plants have a striking appearance, with dark green sword-shaped leaves that have yellow or white stripes. It is a great first plant, and is very easy to care for. It grows in spaces with low sunlight, has visual appeal and cleans the air.

    Lavender

Well known for its relaxing smell, lavender has a calming effect, aids in reducing stress, promotes sleep and specially has anti-inflammatory (抗炎的) effects when used as a medicine for skin. You can cut it off and dry the leaves or even put them into your bath.

    Pothos

If you want to go bright green, try pothos. The plants grow long stems that can hang from a pot and grow downward, or the stems can climb and grow upward. They clean the air and look beautiful hanging down a bookcase or shelf.

    Lemon Balm

This fragrant green herb is part of the mint family and is simple to plant. Known for its calming properties, it has a light lemony smell and has been used to improve sleep, reduce stress and anxiety.

    Basil

The experience of growing, picking and using herbs you’ve grown yourself has a positive impact on your mental health, creating a sense of accomplishment. Eating Basil has health benefits too. It has properties that help to relieve stress and anxiety, and eating it can clear your mind.

  • 23、   “YOU may smile, but it will come,” said Henry Ford in 1940, predicting the arrival of a machine that was part-automobile and part-aeroplane. For decades flying cars have obsessed technologists but eluded their mastery. Finally there is reason to believe. Several firms have offered hope that flying people in small pods for short trips might become a reality in the next decade. These are not cars, as most are not fit to drive on land, but rather small vehicles, which can rise and land vertically, like quiet helicopters.

There are at least a dozen firms experimenting with making small flying vehicles in different guises, including Airbus, an aerospace giant, in partnership with Italdesign Giugiaro, a division of Volkswagen, a carmaker. Many plan to have a certified pilot in command at the beginning and then move on to an autonomous set-up when regulations allow.

No matter which manufacturer is quickest to gain velocity, Uber, a ride-hailing firm, aims to be at the centre of things. On April 25th it held an event in Dallas to announce its plan to offer a service where people can hail an electric “vertical takeoff and landing” vehicle and ride it quickly to destinations that would otherwise take hours in heavy traffic. Uber does not want to build these aircraft or landing pads itself, just as it does not own its own cars. Instead, it plans to collaborate with other companies. But Jeff Holden, Uber’s chief product officer, does not exclude the possibility that the firm may at the outset own some aircraft, which he estimates will cost around $1m each.

The firm plans to have a prototype of its service ready by 2020. It will launch it first in Dallas and in Dubai, both cities where the authorities have deep aviation expertise and where people commute long distances. The firm rather optimistically promises that the cost per aerial mile for passengers will be roughly that of its low-cost car service, UberX.

There is plenty for manufacturers and services like Uber to overcome beyond gravity. For battery-powered models, range is limited and the charging rate remains slow. Manufacturers will need to ensure that vehicles can take off and land quietly, if this new form of transport is to stand a chance in cities. How to oversee and license the new aircraft, which are subject to much tougher rules than cars, will be a subject of intense debate among rule-makers, who tend to move slowly and are just getting to grips with drones. Drivers of flying vehicles are also likely to require a pilot’s license, albeit perhaps a simplified “sports” license. The journey ahead will be a long one.

    1By “ eluded their mastery” ( paragraph 1) , the author means that ___________.

A.technologists were unable to make flying cars a reality.

B.Flying cars were what technologists knew well.

C.technologists found it feasible to produce flying cars.

D.flying cars used to be something too good to be true.

2What can be learned about Uber from the passage?

A.It is looking for some substitute for Uber X.

B.It doesn’t own any car or aircraft at present.

C.It has launched its flying car service in Dubai

D.It plans to cut down on passengers’ pay for rides.

3The phrase “ getting to grips with” ( in the last paragraph) is closest in meaning to ___________.

    A.getting along well with

    B.realizing the need to produce

C.becoming aware of the harm of

D.starting to take action to deal with

4According to the writer, what problem do manufacturers need to solve concerning flying cars?

    A.The noise they may make

B.The high cost of its production

C.The lack of popularity among users.

D.The effect that they have on the environment.

  • 24、   During my first year in college I was forced to do something I didn't want to do: Plan a budget. With great resentment (愤慨) for 6 months I used pens to mark my expenses into 10 different categories. I then came up with a monthly average for each category. It was not until a decade later that I realized the simple exercise of learning to manage money is the best investment.

For most of you, college may be the first time you'll be managing money on your own, and it's easy to blow past your college budget. But overspending could leave you broke or worse, buried in debt. According to Edvisors, 64% of college students have run out of money before the end of the semester. And the consequence is that it will take them the following several years to pay back that big amount.

Before sharing with you my approaches 10 dealing with the situation, I'd like to make you aware of something first. Based on researches, over-spenders mainly fall into one of the following categories.

    a. Image spenders use money in highly visible ways, caring much about their appearance. Their motto is "If I look beautiful, I am beautiful."

    b. Compulsive (难控制的) shoppers use shopping as a distraction (分心) from unwanted negative feelings. Whenever down, they purchase to "drown" the bad feeling.

    c. Bargain-hunting spenders care more about "getting the deal". Their satisfaction comes from the bargaining process or grabbing the bargains.

1What did the writer do in college?

A.She never made both ends meet. B.She recorded the money she spent.

C.She enjoyed making investment. D.She had to buy things she disliked.

2What is the second paragraph mainly about?

A.A plan of making a budget. B.The danger of overspending.

C.A style of paying off debts. D.The value of attending college.

3What do compulsive shoppers and bargain-hunting spenders have in common?

A.Paying great attention to their appearance. B.Seeing the harm of overspending.

C.Satisfying themselves by spending on food. D.Buying too many unwanted items.

4What may probably be mentioned next by the writer?

A.Ways to manage money. B.Examples of success.

C.Consequences of overspending. D.Secrets of happy life .
