二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、It’s late in the evening, time to close the book and turn off the computer. You’re done for the day. What you may not realize, however, is that the learning process actually continues in your dreams.

It might sound like science fiction, but researchers are increasingly focusing on the relationship between the knowledge and skills our brains absorb during the day and the often strange imaginings they generate at night. Scientists have found that dreaming about a task we’ve learned is associated with improved performance in that activity (suggesting that there’s some truth to the popular idea that we’re “getting” a foreign language once we begin dreaming in it). What’s more, dreaming may be an essential part of understanding, organizing and retaining what we learn. While we sleep, research indicates, the brain replays the patterns of activity it experienced during waking hours, allowing us to enter what one psychologist calls a neural virtual reality.

A vivid example of such replay can be seen in a video researchers made recently about sleep disorders. They taught a series of dance moves to patients suffering from sleepwalking and related conditions. They then videotaped the subjects as they slept. Lying in bed, eyes closed, one female patient on the tape performed the dance moves she learned earlier — “the first direct and unambiguous demonstration of behavioral replay of a recently learned skill during human sleep, ” writes lead author Delphine Oudiette.

Of course, most of us are not quite so energetic during sleep — but our brains are busy nonetheless. While our bodies are at rest, scientists theorize, our brains are extracting what’s important from the information and events we’ve recently encountered, then integrating that data into the vast store of what we already know—perhaps explaining why dreams are such an odd mixture of fresh experiences and old memories. A dream about something we’ve just learned seems to be a sign that the new knowledge has been processed effectively. In a 2010 study published in the journal Current Biology, researchers at Harvard Medical School reported that college students who dreamed about a computer maze task they had learned showed a 10-fold improvement in their ability to navigate the maze compared to participants who did not dream about the task.

Robert Stickgold, one of the Harvard researchers, suggests that studying right before bedtime or taking a nap following a study session in the afternoon might increase the odds of dreaming about the material. Think about that as your head hits the pillow tonight.

【1】What happens when one enters a dream state?

A.The body continues to act as if the sleeper were awake.

B.The neural activity of the brain will become more intense.

C.The brain once again experiences the learning activities of the day.

D.The brain behaves as if it were playing a virtual reality video game.

【2】What does the brain do while we are sleeping?

A.It replaces old information with new material.

B.It processes and absorbs newly acquired data.

C.It classifies information and places it in different files.

D.It systematizes all the information collected during the day.

【3】Which of the following can enhance learning according to Robert Stickgold?

A.Staying up late before finally going to bed.

B.Having a period of sleep right after studying.

C.Having a dream about anything you are interested in.

D.Thinking about the chances of dreaming about the material.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

    A.How study affects people’s dreams.

B.Why people learn more after sleeping.

C.What time students should study and sleep.

D.How dreaming may lead to improved learning outcomes.

  • 22、   For many, finding an unattended wallet filled with 400 in cash would be a source of temptation (诱惑). But the urge would no doubt be greater if you were living on the streets with little food and money. All of this makes the actions of the homeless Tom Smith even more remarkable.

After spotting a wallet on the front seat inside a parked car with its window down, he stood guard in the rain for about two hours waiting for the owner to return.

After hours in the cold and wet, he reached inside and pulled the wallet out hoping to find some ID so he could contact the driver, only to discover it contained 400 in notes, with another 50 in spare change beside it.

He then took the wallet to a nearby police station. When the car’s owner John Anderson and his colleague Carol Lawrence returned to the ear, they were shocked to find two policemen standing next to it. The policemen told them what Mr. Smith did and that the wallet was safe.

The pair were later able to thank Mr. Smith for his kindness.

Mr. Anderson said: “I couldn’t believe that the guy never took a penny. To think he is sleeping on the streets tonight when he could have stolen the money and paid for a place to stay in. This guy has nothing and yet he didn’t take the wallet for himself; he thought about others instead. It’s unbelievable. It just proves there are honest guys out there.”

Mr. Smith’s act drew much of the public’s attention and won praise from social media users after Mr. Anderson posted the story on Facebook.

Now Mr. Anderson has set up an online campaign to raise money for Mr. Smith and other homeless people in the area, which by yesterday had received 8,000. “People have been approaching him in the street; he’s had job offers and all sorts,” Mr. Anderson commented.

1Which of the following can we learn from the passage?

A.There was E400 in total in the unattended wallet.

B.The police found the owner of the wallet through an ID card.

C.John and his colleague thanked Tom Smith later face to face.

D.Tom Smith might later get a job offered by kind people.

A.sometimes he didn’t have faith in others

B.Tom Smith took some pennies from the wallet

C.usually the homeless are greedy for money

D.Tom Smith was always thinking of others

3Which words can best describe Tom Smith?

    A.Generous and considerate.

  • 24、Growing up, I always heard people say work hard pays. I never really understood these words until I reached the age where my parents stopped giving me my monthly allowance and asked me to look for a job.

New Year is a season of good news for merrymakers and entrepreneurial (企业家的) characters. My childhood friend was one of the latter. Mike and I were two sides of the same coin. I was an introvert and a bookworm, while Mike was outgoing and a merrymaker. His added advantage over me was that he came from a family of entrepreneurs. Therefore, while I saw the festive season as another time to enjoy, he saw it as a perfect time to make money. Ironically, I needed this side of him, given my present predicament (困境).

Mike was not of the “work hard pays” school of thought but the “work smart” school. When I told him about my predicament, he saw a business partner. He confided ( 吐 露 ) in me about his business idea — making and selling festive decorations. Having noticed my disbelieving look, he told me he had researched and realized that only one shop sold festive decorations with exorbitant ( 过 高 的 ) price, which meant that there was room for competition. However, I reminded him starting a business, let alone competing with an established enterprise, required capital. He told me, “Not really. All we had to do was make some decorations ourselves.” Upon that, we made some special designs and hit the ground running.

News about our selling decorations spread like wildfire. Mike’s decision to publish brochures advertising our products was a genius marketing trick. Within three days, we had sold about 50 sets of decorations, and as they say, the rest is history.

My parents’ decision to stop my monthly allowance served to teach me the value of work. However, it was my entrepreneurial adventure with Mike that taught me that working smart is better than working hard.

【1】What was the author’s present predicament?

    A.Weak reading skills.

    B.Lack of financial support.

    C.Poor communication ability.

    D.Awful relationship with parents.

【2】What do the underlined words “hit the ground running” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Set off immediately.

    B.Collected money eagerly.

    C.Imagined the future merrily.

    D.Started the business successfully.

    【3】What is Mike’s marketing strategy?

    A.Advertising their products widely.

    B.Doing research in advance.

    C.Designing delicate decorations.

    D.Making decorations on their own.

【4】What can we learn from the author’s story?

    A.Smart work outweighs hard work.

    B.Wisdom comes from hard work.

    C.Working hard pays off.

D.Working smart starts with working hard.
