二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Genealogy, or researching your family tree, is a hobby that can rapidly develop into an obsession. Before you start looking for your own ancestors, read this advice from genealogist Maria McLeod.

The first question to ask yourself is why you want to research your family tree. Genealogy is not about discovering that you are the lost prince or princess of an unknown kingdom. It’s about finding more about yourself. For most people the important question is “Why am I like I am?” You might not look like other members of your immediate family and you want to know where your green eyes or curly hair come from. You may be curious about why you have such a quick temper. You may even be suffering from a medical condition and want to know if something in your genetic makeup has caused it.

Another common motivation for researching your family tree is that you plan to visit the place that your ancestors came from and you secretly hope that you will find some long lost cousins with whom you can share your memories. There can be few more exciting things than meeting a distant cousin who is living on the other side of the globe and finding that she looks just like your younger sister. But you should also bear in mind that they may not necessarily want to have anything to do with you. Sometimes there are skeletons in the cupboard that you and your branch of the family are unaware of, but which are still fresh in the minds of your more distant relatives.

Once you are clear about your motivations, you need to take a moment to think about just how many ancestors you might have and how far back you intend to go. You have, no doubt, thought about your parents’ parents and your parents’ parents’ parents. But go back ten generations and the picture becomes much more complicated. You can work it out for yourself. You may be descended(遗传) from no fewer than 1,024 people through ten generations. This can mean that you spend hours going through official records, either in person at the records office or on the Internet. Are you prepared for such a huge task?

1What might be Maria Mcleod’s first piece of advice be?

A.Be prepared to accept your bad temper.

B.Don’t expect to find lovely relatives.

C.Be prepared to find out your hidden health problems.

D.Don’t expect to find out you are a member of a royal family.

2Why are some relatives unwilling to meet you?

A.You may bring back bad memories.

B.They find it disturbing to entertain you.

C.They suspect you of having wrong motives.

D.You could remind them of their lost loved ones.

3What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?

    A.Who your great grandparents are.

B.When you can finish your huge task.

C.Why researching a family tree is complex.

D.How many people you are descended from.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.Uncovering family secrets: do you dare?

  • 23、   Elizabeth Anionwu, who has received four honorary degrees for her excellent work in nursing, has devoted her life to improving the lives of thousands in the black community who are suffering with sickle cell disease.

Born to an Irish woman and a Nigerian man, her own upbringing was tarnished by racial discrimination and cruelty. Soon after her birth in 1947, she was sent away to a children’s home run by nuns (修女) who were, at times, very unkind indeed. Once, she was made to stand with a dirty wet sheet over her head as a punishment for wetting the bed.

But a caring nursing nun she met at the age of four inspired her career in nursing. “I had painful eczema (湿疹), which the nuns would treat with a special medicine and cover with bandages,” she explains. “Other nuns would tear them off in a hurry and my skin would break and bleed. But one nice nun treated me very gently and I never felt a thing. Later on, I discovered she was a nurse and I decided that’s what I wanted to be.” At 16 she became a school nurse assistant, which was the start of a 50-year career as a nurse and professor.

In the early 70s, Anionwu had her first encounter with sickle cell anaemia-a painful disease found mostly in African and Caribbean families-which at the time was often overlooked. Families had no information about how to cope with their illness or the symptoms to look out for, so Anionwu took action, raising awareness of the disease and setting up the Sickle Cell Society. It’s then that she became the first sickle cell and thalassemia (地中海贫血症) specialist in Britain.

Elizabeth Anionwu has spent her life as a nurse and tutor, working with black and minority communities in London. In 2019, she was presented with the Pride Of Britain’s Lifetime Achievement Award for her great services to nursing.

  • 24、The 2022 FIFA World Cup kicked off, with more than 30 teams participating. In the tournament’s 92-year history, only eight countries have won: Brazil, Italy, France, Germany, Argentina, Spain, Uruguay and England.

It was the first time that the Cup had been held in the Middle East. Summer temperatures in Qatar regularly top 100 degrees, so for the safety of both athletes and audience, organizers pushed the month-long contest out to late November, when the weather is milder.

Uruguay was the first host and winner of the World Cup back in 1930. The final match played out in front of 60,000 audiences. No World Cup was held between 1938 and 1950 due to World War Ⅱ. The 1950 tournament in Brazil featured separate East and West German teams. It wasn’t until the 1994 World Cup that Germany took part as a unified team. West Germany won in 1954.

That 1950 Cup was also the first to feature England, despite soccer being an English invention. That year, Team USA beat England 1-0, though some British newspapers reported the result as USA 1, England 10, as editors believed the real score had a typo. Both sides believed it would be an easy win for England, and double-digit (两位数) goals were expected. This match is considered by many as one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history.

The first women’s World Cup started many decades after the men’s, in 1991. That first one was held in China. Our team is so dominant that we have won half of all the World Cups to date. The women play every four years, just like the men, but not on the same schedule. The next women’s World Cup will be held in 2023 in Australia and New Zealand.

【1】Why was the 2022 World Cup put off to winter?

    A.To satisfy audience.

    B.To be a special match.

    C.To avoid high temperatures.

D.To meet the requirements of the players.

【2】How is the text mainly organized?

    A.In time order.

    B.In space order.

    C.By explanation.

    D.By comparison.

【3】What does the underlined word “typo” mean in paragraph 4?

    A.A typing error.

    B.A spelling error.

    C.A program error.

    D.A mathematical error.

【4】What can we learn about the women’s World Cup from the last paragraph?

A.China won the first women’s World Cup.

B.China has hosted 50% of the women’s World Cups.

C.It is arranged on a different timetable from the men’s.

D.It is held in the same country as the men’s every four years.
