二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、When I was in my fourth year of teaching, I was also (and am still) a high school track and field coach . One year, I had a student, John, who entered my class when he was a junior. John changed to our school from Greece, and seemed to be interested in athletics, so I encouraged him to join our track team. I explained to him that even though he had never taken part in it before, I did believe that he could do well in any event, and I would be willing to coach him at whichever ones interested him. He accepted the offer, and began to work hard at every practice.

About a month later, I had found out from other sources that John was a first-class tennis player, winning various junior awards in his home country. I went to him asking, "John, I really appreciate that you came out for the track team, but why didn't you play tennis instead? It seems that would interest you a lot more, since you're so good at it." John answered, "Well, I like tennis, but you told me that you believed in me, and that you thought I could do well in track, so I wanted to try it for that reason."

From then on, I often remember my student's reply. I told it to a friend and she suggested I write it down to share somewhere with more teachers. No matter how critical students can be of themselves, I've found that a simple "I trust that you can do it!" can go a long way!

【1】According to Paragraph 1, what does the author think more about?

    A.John's state of health.

    B.John's PE marks.

    C.John's self-confidence.

    D.John's interest in sports.

【2】Why did John take part in the track team?

A.He had no tennis coach to train him.

B.He had been an excellent runner.

C.He was encouraged by his teacher.

D.He liked running more than tennis.

【3】What's the writer's purpose of writing this passage?

A.To show the importance of encouragement.

    B.To build a close teacher-student relationship.

C.To introduce a new way of sports training.

D.To explain the value of sports and games.

【4】Who is the passage mainly written for?

    A.Players.

    B.Teachers.

    C.Parents.

    D.Students.

  • 22、From the age of 6, Samirah Horton was bullied (欺凌) by her classmates for the things that made her different — her size and her sharp voice. Rather than giving up, Horton decided to pick up a microphone and make sure other children knew they weren’t alone. “I didn’t want other kids to go through that experience,” says Horton, “especially at a very young age.” Now, alongside attending eighth grade classes, she’s also building an anti-bullying platform to reach students across the country.

For as long as Horton remembers, she's felt a special connection to music. She remembers her mother always having the radio on, and her father teaching her how to deejay (主持) . Music gives her unlimited power to do the duty. “It’s music that fuels my mission, allowing me to spread this important message,”she says. Now as the Kid DJ for her hometown team, you can hear anything from the hip-hop classics to songs of her own, including the anti-bullying song “No You Won’t Bully Me”.

Her message has reached beyond the DJ set. At 8. Horton turned one of her songs into a 26-page picture book, which has reached thousands of people across America. In the book, she references the over 160,000 students who miss school daily for fear of being bullied.

Horton isn’t sure exactly what the future holds, but for now, she’s positive about leading her school’s student government. “I don’t know exactly what I’ll be doing, but I know I’ll be making a positive influence on the world,” she says. She’s already on her way, but her biggest achievement in her own eyes is persuading others not to doubt themselves along the way. “Don’t care what anybody tells you,” she says. “You are never too young to make a change.”

    【1】Why was Horton bullied?

    A.Because of her age.

    B.Because of her weight.

    C.Because of her grades.

    D.Because of her hobby.

【2】What does the underlined word “mission” in paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Task.

    B.Anger.

    C.Skill.

    D.Curiosity.

【3】What can we learn from Horton’s story?

    A.Fear invites danger.

    B.No voice is too small.

    C.Success is peace of mind.

    D.Imperfections are beauty.

【4】What might be the best title for the passage?

    A.A Picture-Book Writer

    B.A Hip-Hop Music Lover

    C.An Environmental Activist

    D.An Anti-Bullying Advocate

  • 23、   Jon Hoffman was sitting at a red light when he saw a man run out of a store carrying a plastic donation jar full of cash. The Plano, Texas, detective, dressed in plain clothes but wearing his badge (徽章) and gun, caught the man and pinned him to the hood of his car. But Hoffman had trouble containing the thief, and they got into a struggle.

“The detective has a martial arts background, and he said he thought the suspect must have a martial arts background, too, because he was able to break away so easily,” a Plano police spokesperson said.

The detective called out for help as a crowd gathered. Among those watching: Andre Harvey and Kirby Sample, two day laborers. Harvey did what has become common these days—he took out his phone and hit record. “I hate to say it, but I thought that this policeman was doing something illegal,” Harvey said. “But when he asked for help, I thought, well, there won’t be a shooting if I get over there in time.” Harvey jumped into action—while he was still recording the video—as did Sample.

“Harvey caught hold of the suspect’s arms, while Kirby seized his legs, and they were able to get the suspect to the ground to help Detective Hoffman put the handcuffs (手铐) on,” said the police spokesperson. The 27-year-old suspect was charged with resisting arrest and other offenses. The charity jar he stole held less than $ 50.

“I’ve been on the wrong side of the law several times in my life,” Harvey told WFAA. “It feels good to be on the right side and do something positive.”

After the arrest, the three men got to know each other over steaks and ribs at a local steak house—Hoffman’s treat, as a thank-you. But the rescuers say Hoffman deserves credit too. “It could have turned real ugly.” Sample told the media “He handled himself like a real professional.”

1What made Hoffman call for help when arresting the suspect?

    A. He was not on duty. B. He needed witnesses to support him.

    C. He wanted to push the thief into the car. D. He couldn’t control the suspect.

2Why did Harvey and Kirby record the scene at the beginning?

    A. To follow the fashion. B. To keep track of the criminal.

    C. To record the detective’s violence. D. To avoid being involved in the incident.

3What can be inferred about Harvey?

    A. He was ready to violate the law. B. He might have had some illegal behaviour.

    C. He was out of work at that time. D. He had a good martial arts background.

4What is Harvey and Sample’s attitude towards Hoffman?

    A. Appreciative. B. Prejudiced.

    C. Skeptical. D. Cautious.

  • 24、Year of Giving

Yesterday I started the Year of Giving, my first day of a year-long journey into exploring the act of giving and the meaning of charity. I chose December 15 as the starting date, which marked three years since my mother died from heart disease. She was one of the most generous people that I have ever known. She always thought of others first and certainly serves as an inspiration to me.

I had a rather busy day yesterday, ironic (具有讽刺意义的) for someone who is unemployed right now. In the morning I went to the gym, and unsuccessfully got the phone call from the unemployment office for some job searching. Before I knew it, it was noon. I grabbed a quick lunch and rushed down to a meeting. On my way to Connecticut, I wondered if I would see someone that I would feel forced to give my first $ 10 to. I was running late and decided to do it afterwards.

After the meeting I had about half an hour to find the first person of my Year of Giving! I decided to check out DuPont Circle. I had met a guy there named Jerry once and thought he would willingly accept my $ 10. He wasn’t there, but I did see a man sitting by himself who looked really lonely, so I approached him. Now I had to figure out what I was going to say, I think I said something like, “Hi, can I sit down here?” “I would like to know if I could give you $ 10?” He asked me to repeat what I had said, I did, then he looked at me funny, got up and left.

I then started walking south where I spotted a man standing by the bus stop on Connecticut Ave. He appeared to be in his 60s. I don’t know what drew me to him, but I thought I would make my second attempt. I was a bit nervous and asked him which bus came by that stop. Then I explained that I was starting a year-long project to give $ 10 to someone every day and that I wanted to give my $ 10 for today to him. The gentleman, I later found out that his name was Ed, responded without hesitation that he could not accept my offer and that there were many people more deserving the money than him. This was exactly one of the things that I hoped would happen. People would think of others before themselves.

【1】The author set the starting date on December 15 to ____.

    A. help the charity B. remember his mother

    C. make an explosion  D. fulfill a wish of his mum

【2】In the author’s first attempt to give away the money, ____.

    A. he was considered ridiculous

    B. he hesitated for a long time

    C. he was forced to donate the money

    D. he had no time to take action

【3In the author’s second attempt, the gentleman refused his offer because ____.

    A. he didn’t need other’s help

    B. he thought more for others

    C. he didn’t care about money

    D. he wanted to get more money

【4】We can infer that the author was inspired by ____.

    A. true friendship   B. his own kindness

    C. generous donations   D. human’s good nature
