二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Face-book chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg and Anna Maria Chavez, chief of American Girl Scouts, are leading a campaign to discourage the use of the word “bossy”. Does the term destroy the confidence of young girls?

The campaign claims that terms like bossy are improperly applied to females, preventing schoolgirls from seeing themselves as future leaders. From its first application, the word has been definitely connected more with women than with men. It first appeared in 1882,according to the Oxford English Dictionary, mentioning a lady manager who was extremely bossy. As late as 2008, the word appeared in reference to females four times more often than males, claim the Ban Bossy campaigners. To me, the reference is always in association with women, says Helen Trim, director of Fresh Minds. I have three brothers and my family still call me bossy today. Her father is the only other family member who could be considered in that way, says Trim, but nobody would ever call him so.

Some educators recommend that the word should be reclaimed, rather than banned. But the thing with bossy,is that theres an infantile (幼稚的)element to it, says Sara Mills, professor at Sheffield University. You think of 'bossy' as being like a little kid who's claiming more than he has the right to claim. ”

It's not just bossy under fire. Pushy is another Face-book chief operating officer Sheryl Sandbergtarget. The implication is that women shouldnt present themselves as powerful and confident, Mills suggests, which some women are willing to listen to and accept. Trim points out that many modern female business role models are able to be bosses without being labeled bossy'. And she rarely, if ever, hears the word used within her company. But she says that the damage may be done much earlier in a womans life. It does come about from those early teenage years. she says. I think its impossible to ban a word, but if people are replacing it with words like 'confidence' or assertiveness,we would all be in a much better place.

【1】More evidence is provided to show "bossy" is more applied to females by _   .

    A. the Oxford English Dictionary

    B. the Ban Bossy campaigners

    C.  Helen Trim at Fresh Minds

    D.  some experts in education

2 Trim's family still consider her bossy because   .

    A. she is expected to lead in her family

    B. she is the boss of her company

    C. she is a powerful and confident female

    D. her father considers her that way

3The underlined part "under fire  most probably means .

    A. definitely replaced

    B. strongly criticized

    C. improperly applied

    D. eagerly expected

4How does the author sound when referring to the campaign against "bossy"?

    A. Objective. B. Angry.

    C. Doubtful D. Optimistic.

  • 22、   Technology is changing the way we get our news. Many people get a lot of their news on electronic devices instead of traditional media. They turn to social media for information. Recently, China's news agency Xinhua launched computer-created news readers, the world's first artificial intelligence, or Al news presenters.

I he news readers - created by machine learning technology - are based on two real-life Chinese newsmen. One is able to present newscasts in English; the other, in Mandarin Chinese. Machine teaming was used to examine video images and sounds of the two newsmen. The system then created the Al robotic presenters, which look and sound like real people.

The AI presenters will be a great improvement to the news team because they can work 24 hours a day on its website and on social media. One of the presenters even promised to work tirelessly to keep people informed The Al newsmen were able to read the news as naturally as a human presenter

Some machine learning experts said the system showed off China's latest progress in voice recognition, text-to-speech technology and data analysis. But several experts suggested that the term Al does not correctly describe abilities of the robotic news readers. On social media, many Chinese noted that the Al presenters did not seem real. People criticized them for not being more lifelike. On Weibo, several users wrote that the news readers have no soul.

Some people argued that only low-level jobs requiring heavy labor will he easily replaced by robots. Others praised the technology as a way for companies to make money from low-cost labor machines,

A writer for the MIT Technology Review declared Xinhua's news reader announcement as fake news. China's news presenter isn't intelligent at all. the report said. MIT Technology Review said the presenter itself is little more than a digital puppet that reads. It added. “The 'AI' in this case is the software that learns what makes a convincing-looking face and voice." While the demonstration was clearly evidence of improved technology it was a very narrow example of machine learning, the report said. Some businesses have experimented with similar technology for possible use in news operations.

【1】What advantage does the Al presenter have over real newsmen?

A.The AI presenter reads news more fluently.

B.The AI presenters can work around the clock.

C.I he AI presenters can speak multi languages.

D.The AI presenter has an unusual voice.

【2】Why do some netizens dislike the robotic news readers?

    A.Because their pronunciation sounds confusing.

    B.Because they perform without passion.

    C.Because they convey wrong messages,

    D.Because their accents arc funny.

【3】What might be talked about in the following paragraph?

A.The examples of businesses with similar technology.

B.The introduction of specific operating methods4

    C.The benefits of improved technology.

D.The ways of Al news broadcasting.

【4】What could be the best title of the passage?

A.Al newsmen are changing the world.

B.Robots will take the place of human.

C.Win the robot control the labor market?

D.Will robot readers take over the future of news?

  • 23、Do you ever hear a friend speak on a topic with the belief that “everyone”thinks the same way? Do you often find yourself surrounded in a social media feed that is completely tailored to you and your beliefs, reading along without the immediate realization?

A social media echo chamber (回声壁) is when one experiences a tailored media experience that leave out opposing viewpoints and differing voices. Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube connect groups of like-minded users together based on shared content preferences. As a result, people see and take in information according to our preexisting beliefs and opinions. Social media companies therefore rely on algorithms (算法) to assess our interests and flood us with information that will keep our attention. The algorithms focus on what we “like”, and “share” to keep feeding content that makes us comfortable.

In order to truly get access to all information and to evaluate our media, we must give ourselves the opportunity to step out of our comfort zone. While this becomes increasingly challenging, there are things we can do. The first step is to beef up your media consumption sources. Adding in a few media sources with differing opinions will allow you to at least understand what people are saying outside of your echo chamber. Next, read each thing you see with a critical eye. Make sure that each thing you accept as truth is truly fact. Lastly, attempt to search out reliable new sources that are known for trying their best to leave out false information. By accepting that our media buffet on social media is a product of our present beliefs and opinions, we can work to make sure we are not simply stuck in a social media echo chamber.

【1】What is a result of the social media echo chamber?

A.People contact like-minded online users effectively.

B.People keep reading for more differing viewpoints.

C.People rely on algorithms to evaluate their interests.

D.People only get information confirming their beliefs.

【2】What does “beef up”underlined in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Track.

    B.Improve.

    C.Provide.

    D.Identify.

【3】Which of the following can help us get out of the echo chamber?

A.Criticizing fake news on social media.

    B.Exposing ourselves to opposing voices.

    C.Researching primary sources of information.

D.Accepting our present beliefs and opinions.

【4】What is the purpose of the text?

A.To call on people to use algorithms frequently.

B.To ask people not to take in information blindly.

C.To promote the use of various social media sites.

D.To inform people of new technology developments.

  • 24、It shouldn’t come as news to anyone that the planet is moving quickly towards a climate emergency. And fast fashion certainly plays its part in this.

Fast fashion brands, which release hundreds of new styles every week, have caused trends cycles to speed up rapidly, leading to overproduction and overconsumption. British shoppers are buying twice as much as we did a decade ago and both brands and consumers are throwing away “unfashionable” clothing more often—over £300,000 of it ends up in landfill every year. How do we solve this issue?

One answer lies in the new generation of made-to-order brands making their way into the mainstream. These brands make clothes only as and when they’re ordered, and because there’s no overproduction, less unwanted stock ends up in landfills. They also promote a slower fashion model, with pieces taking between three weeks and three months to arrive once purchased. The focus is on creating special, well-made pieces for consumers to treasure for years to come.

Made-to-order fashion is nothing new. Until the mid-20th century, it was the norm. However, the 1960s brought about the dawn of fast fashion and a shift in our relationship with our clothes. The value once placed on craftsmanship and quality was replaced by the desire for low cost and volume, resulting in cut-cost production and the attitude that clothing should be cheap and disposable.

Of course, made-to-order fashion has continued to exist alongside this, though research clearly shows that fast fashion prevails (盛行). Cue a made-to-order brand bringing bespoke (定制) back to the mainstream. Spanish brand Alas features a slow business model. It takes orders each week which are then handmade and delivered in about three weeks. It also revolves around an on-demand production process that rewards consumers for “pre-planned responsible shopping.” Every week, they launch a new drop, available to pre-order for a discounted rate for a limited time. From pre-order, Alas determines how popular each new item is and calculates how many units should be produced to fulfill both pre-orders and future full-price orders, therefore reducing the overproduction of stock.

With made-to-order brands growing in popularity, it begs the question—could this be the dawn of a new, environmentally responsible era? The answer is self-evident.

【1】What do the first two paragraphs mainly show?

    A.Our strong desire for fashion.

B.The fast development of fashion industry.

C.The urgent need for a different fashion model.

D.The advantages and disadvantages of fast fashion.

【2】What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 5 refer to?

    A.The shadow of fast fashion.

    B.The value placed on quality.

C.The shift towards a green lifestyle.

D.The criticism for cheapness and quantity.

【3】What does the example of Spanish brand Alas tell us?

A.The reward mechanism is a must in slow fashion.

B.It takes patience and thought to buy made-to-order items.

C.The pre-order model reduces the cost of purchasing brands.

D.Consumers have a say about how their orders are produced.

【4】As for the future of made-to-order fashion, the author is ________ .

    A.anxious

    B.confident

    C.puzzled

    D.curious
