  • 21、After Scott Kelly spent a year in space, his genetic expression changed, according to a NASA study that compared the bodily changes between the astronaut and his identical twin, who stayed on Earth while Kelly was aboard the International Space Station. About 7 percent of Kelly’s gene activity has yet to “return to normal” — almost two years after his yearlong spaceflight mission came to an end. Kelly has since retired from NASA.

The Twins Study,as it’s been called, looked at what happened to Kelly — both physiologically and psychologically :— before, during and after his trip in space, and then compared that data to Kelly’s twin brother,Mark Kelly, also a retired NASA astronaut.

Unlike his brother who spent months at a time in space,Mark’s missions were on the shorter side. His last — and longest — mission, which took place in 2011,lasted 15 days.

“By measuring large numbers of the brother’s metabolites, cytokines (代谢物、细胞活素)and proteins, researchers learned that spaceflight is associated with oxygen deprivation (匮乏)stress, increased inflammation (炎症),and nutrient changes that affect gene expression,” NASA said.

Although most of the biological changes Kelly experienced in space disappeared in the hours and days (and in some cases? weeks) after his return to Earthy, NASA said some changes appear to have continued. While 93 percent of his genetic expression has returned to normal, several hundred “space genes” still have changed activity levels, the data suggests, which, NASA said, could indicate “longer-term changes” in genetic expression caused by the stresses of spaceflight.

NASA said the research could provide important knowledge of the effects of long-term spaceflight on the human body, and that it will influence its planning for a mission to Mars, which would see astronauts spending some three years in space.

Reacting to the news of the study results, Kelly expressed amazement at his body’s changes, and also used the opportunity to make fun of his brother. “This could be good news,” he joked on Twitter. “I no longer have to call Mark my identical twin brother anymore.”

【1】What can be learnt about Mark Kelly?

    A.He’s still working for NASA.

B.He has only been to space once.

C.He hasn’t gone on a spaceflight mission yet.

D.He never stayed in space for a whole month.

【2】What does NASA’s research show about genetic expression changes?

    A.They’re dangerous to astronauts.

B.Most of them won’t last very long.

C.They’re mainly caused by psychological stress.

D.Some can occur during short-term spaceflight.

【3】What can we know about the Twins Study?

    A.It involved many twin participants.

B.It ended soon after Scott Kelly’s last spaceflight.

C.It only studied Scott Kelly’s physical changes.

D.It will be valuable to NASA’s Mars mission.

【4】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.Mark Kelly will lose his twin brother soon.

B.Scott Kelly always looks on the bright side.

C.Scott Kelly doesn’t like his twin brother.

D.Scott Kelly seems to have a sense of humor.

  • 22、   There are around 100 tribes(部落)that live in global isolation, mostly in South America and India. The Sentinelese have lived on one of the Andaman Islands in Eastern India for 60, 000 years. They protect their island by fighting against people from outside. Their language is different from any other known language. Another Andaman tribe is the Jarawa. In the past, they were independent and fought against anybody trying to make contact with them. But in 1998, the Indian government built a road across their land, and since then, they’ve had more contact with the outside world.

Some Amazon tribes avoid contact because of unhappy memories. The Mashco-Piro left their vegetable gardens after rubber companies killed most of their tribe at the beginning of the 20th century. Those who survived became nomadic(游牧的)and started hunting animals in the forest.

The Awa live in the Amazon forests ofBrazil. Out of 350 members, 100 have no contact with the outside world. They left their villages and adopted a nomadic lifestyle around 1850 to escape attacks by Europeans. In the following years, farmers in nearby communities started cutting the trees to expand their farmland. The Awa lost most of their hunting land. The few Amazon tribes that still exist are fighting to keep their traditional way of life.

Survival, an organization that fights for the rights of tribal people, says that uncontacted tribes are the most vulnerable(弱势的)humans on the planet and that’s why their environment should be unavailable to the rest of us. After years of pressure, the organization got Brazil’s government to clear non-natives from the Awa land. All non-Awa people are leaving so the tribe can get their forest back.

But some think it's impossible for tribes to stay isolated forever in a connected world. Contact will be made one day. So the question is:Whose choice should it be, ours or theirs?

【1】What can we learn about the Sentinelese from the first paragraph?

A.They resist contact from the outside world.

B.They speakthe same language as the Jarawa.

C.They are wild about fighting with other tribes.

D.They have got help from the Indian govemment.

【2】Why did the Awa choose a nomadic lifestyle?

    A.To protect their hunting land.

    B.To search for food sources.

    C.To avoid threats from Europeans.

D.To maintain their original way of life.

【3】Which of the following would Survival probably agree with?

A.The tribes should be left undisturbed.

B.The tribes should fight for more living space.

C.The cribes should live in harmony with nature.

D.The tribes should adapt to the connected world.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

A.The Nomadic Tribes in the World

    B.Seeking Survival of Tribes

    C.The Unavailable Tribal Environment

    D.Protecting the Tribal Forests

  • 23、Michael Gonsalves, a chef of Golden Oak at Disney World, has a cuisine concept rooted in fresh, locally-sourced ingredients that originated from childhood harvesting produce from their family garden with his mom to eventually leading kitchens at Walt Disney World Resorts to employ a sustainable model.

“Truly the whole process starts with menu planning,” he said. Creating one dish leads into the creation of many more through the end-to-end use of products. As chefs, they are always searching for the best ingredients. It is then their focus to ensure they appreciate and respect all that go into each and every one of them. For example, they source chicken that is naturally grown and fed on a natural plant forward diet, no hormones (激素) or additives — that’s used in many ways throughout menus from a simple grilled chicken breast to bone soup. Nothing goes to waste.

When they do have waste, even if minimal, they shift it from landfills to transform it into compost (堆肥) that’s then used across the Walt Disney World property. They also support Second Harvest, a local community food bank where healthy produce, prepared, but not served, meals eatable for human consumption are donated. Disney also works with pig farmers when they can’t distribute foods past the point of safety for human consumption. Besides, wildlife reservations love to get the meat because tigers and wild cats can still eat that.

Their operations are “on a path to a sustainable zero waste kitchen of tomorrow” where chefs learn the full-life cycle of plants from seed to plate and gain a better understanding and appreciation for the product and their craft.

Golden Oak at Disney has millions of bees that produce up to 300 pounds of honey per year, plus those bees help with cross pollination (授粉) of their gardens on a daily basis. They advocate a culture that helps develop not only the quality of food, but an appreciation for nature.

【1】Where did Michael Gonsalves’ idea about cuisine come from?

    A.His mom’s suggestions.

B.His dream of becoming a chef.

    C.His interest in delicious food.

D.His labor experience as a child.

【2】How are the ingredients dealt with in Golden Oak?

    A.They are grilled to eat.

B.They are used to the fullest.

    C.They are divided into groups.

    D.They are selected by quality.

【3】What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?

    A.Give examples about zero waste.

B.Introduce the unique habit of wildlife.

C.Stress the importance of natural food.

D.Explain the operation mode of the food bank.

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

    A.Disney World:New Cuisine Road

    B.Michael Gonsalves:Creative Chef

    C.Michael Gonsalves:Advocate of Food Diversity

  • 24、   Every year a community in some part of the world is destroyed by flooding. Indeed, flooding can happen anywhere it rains. There is hope, however. Architects and civil engineers have developed promising technologies for flood control. And yes, engineering can be beautiful.

    The Thames Barrier in England

The Thames Barrier is the second largest flood defence barrier in the world. Made of steel, water gates on the Thames Barrier are normally left open so ships can pass through. Then, as needed, the water gates shut to stop water flowing through and to keep the Thames River safe. The Thames Barrier  has 10 steel gates. The main gates stand as high as a 5-storey building.  Each main gate weighs 3,300 tonnes. The Thames Barrier gates were constructed between 1974 and 1984 and have been closed to prevent floods more than 100 times.

    Red Sluice Gate in Japan

To protect areas on the coast and along Japan’s rapidly-flowing rivers, the nation’s engineers have developed a complex system of canals and flood-gate locks(水闸). Red Sluice Gate was designed in 1924 by a Japanese architect who also worked on the Panama Canal. It is powered by automated "water-drive" motors. Such motors don’t need electricity to run, so they aren’t affected by power failures that can occur during storms. It contributed greatly to preventing floods until 1982 when a new sluice gate was completed. The Red Sluice Gate was no longer used but remains an impressive sight.

The Hagestein Weir in the Netherlands

Completed in about 1960, the Hagestein Weir is one of three movable dams, along the Rhine River in the Netherlands. The Hagestein Weir has two enormous arched gates to control water and generate power. Spanning 54 meters, the gates are stored in the up position.  Dams and water barriers like Hagestein Weir have become models for water control engineers around the world.

    MOSE in Venice

With its famous canals, Venice, Italy is a well-known watery city. Global warming threatens its very existence. Since the 1980s, officials have been pouring money into the MOSE project, a series of 78 barriers that can rise collectively or independently across the lagoon opening and curtail the rising waters of the Adriatic Sea.

【1】What do we know about the Thames Barrier?

A.It is the largest water barrier in the world.

B.Its water gates are open at a normal time.

C.It took more than 10 years to construct.

D.Its ten water gates weigh 3,300 tonnes.

【2】What is a special feature of Red Sluice Gate in Japan?

    A.It is still in operation.

B.It still works with power cut.

C.It is the most impressive sight.

D.It was designed by an architect from Panama.

【3】What is the common function of the 4 constructions?

    A.To produce electricity.

    B.To advance technology.

    C.To promote tourism.

    D.To control flood.
