  • 21、Wendo Musaly was born in Congo (DRC) on November 21, 1996. Two months after he was born, the situation in Congo went into a state of war causing unrest across the country. To keep their children, Wendo and his elder sister, safe, Wendo’s parents decided to flee to Tanzania, where they had to live in refugee (难民) camps, dependent on others for the basic necessities of life.

At 11, Wendo and his friends formed a music group. Guitars and drums were the only instruments they had to practice their music. After some time, they gained confidence in themselves and began performing in the street and even at parties. This was when Wendo realized that he had a talent in him.

After Wendo was hit with the realization that he was great with music, he began taking it more seriously. In 2016, when his family finally moved to the States, Wendo could see a future for himself. Although late, his parents got him and his sister in a high school to complete their studies in 2016. Wendo went to Winooski High School and completed his high school studies in 2020. All this time, he did not abandon his passion for music. Instead, he tried his hand at songwriting.

Musaly got his first break in August 2018 when he cooperated with Mr. Oli on a song named Pourquoi. As a newcomer, it was surprising for him to receive a positive response to his work, and this was just the beginning of his career. He started working on various projects and made tons of works produced by working with others. Wendo then released a song, Give Me That Eh, featuring Mr. Oli & Q-Boi and Tú’úndané featuring Lumiere. He also worked on some singles, including Kiboko WE and Je T’Aime.

  • 22、   Today, Mars is a frozen desert with a thin atmosphere, too cold for liquid water to remain on the surface. Overwhelming evidence exists that Mars had liquid water oceans roughly 4 billion years ago. The question that drives our interests isn’t whether there’s life on present-day Mars. We are driven instead by asking whether there was life on Mars billions of years ago, which seems significantly more likely.

But if water existed on the Marian surface before, how was it possible? Mars is further away from the sun than Earth, and billions of years ago, the sun didn’t throw off as much heat as it does now.

The planet’s protective magnetic field mysteriously disappeared around 4.2 billion years ago as Mars cooled after forming. The sun’s solar wind then blew away the Martian atmosphere. leaving behind the thin one the planet has today.

Scientists believe the atmosphere was a key component for a warm, wet Mars that may have once hosted life. To have made the planet warm enough for liquid surface water, its atmosphere would likely have needed a large amount of greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide specifically.

Currently, we don’t know the carbon dioxide content of Mars ancient atmosphere. So the researchers turned to the Nordlinger Ries crater(陨石坑)in southern Germany. It was created by a meteorite(陨石)impact 15 million years ago. That geology and the chemistry of the site act as a good similar for the Martian surface.

Researchers will study the pH and nitrogen that might have been in ancient Martian water, which will show the carbon dioxide content in its ancient atmosphere. That will throw light on whether Mars was once warm enough to support life.

The Mars 2020 rover(探测器)will land in a similar crater next year, collecting samples that will be returned to Earth in a future mission. It could be 10 to 20 years before Mars samples are brought back to Earth. We might know the answer to one of the first questions once these samples are distributed to labs in the US and throughout the world.

【1】What are people more interested in about Mars?

A.Whether there was ever life on Mars.

B.Whether there is life on Mars now.

C.Whether there was ever water on Mars.

D.Whether it is possible for life on Mars.

【2】The Martian atmosphere was blown away by solar wind, because Mars ________.

    A.was too cold

    B.had no water on it

    C.lost its magnetic field

D.was too far from the sun

【3】What do researchers want to find out in the Nordlinger Ries crater?

    A.How this crater was formed.

B.Why Mars is not suitable for life.

C.Whether there is any life sign on Mars.

D.How much carbon dioxide is in Mars’ ancient atmosphere.

【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Mars samples will be brought back to earth in 2021.

B.Many countries take part in the research of Mars.

C.It takes at least ten years for people to reach Mars.

D.Mars samples will help discover all the secrets of Mars.

  • 23、My neighbors across the street take pride in one of the most striking trees in the neighborhood—a towering oak that is over 75 years old. This year, after a wet, warm summer, leaves were a bit different in my Massachusetts town. And through some combination of events, that glorious oak seemed to have dropped all of its uncountable leaves on a single windy day. I arrived at home that afternoon to find our front walkway, driveway and sidewalk completely blanketed.

My son and I had a great time making a leaf pile for jumping and enjoying pillowy fun. The whole time, I was fascinated by the speed of this year’s leaf drop. Even though I was aware that it was an accident of wind patterns that left all the leaves in our yard, I kept looking up and feeling a zing of awe at the suddenly bare branches that watched quietly over our neighborhood, starting its restful season before setting spring leaf buds.

And I felt thankful for those fallen leaves as I was reminded of my favorite quote from the author and naturalist Hal Borland. He wrote it referencing October, but this year’s later drop had me change the month:“November is the fallen leaf, but it is also a wider horizon more clearly seen. It is the distant hills once more in sight, and the enduring constellations (星座) above them once again.”

When I lay in that pile of dry, crisp leaves and looked up into the oak tree across the street, I felt a clarity and peace that comes along with the inconveniently early sunsets and chilly temperatures of the transition from fall into winter. I could still admire the tree as I had in spring and summer, but I could also see through it, beyond it, to the big sky that blankets us all.

    【1】What’s unusual this year?

A.Outdoor activities are limited due to heavy winds.

B.A series of special events happened in the neighborhood.

C.The weather is especially cold in winter in Massachusetts.

D.The neighbors’ big tree dropped all its leaves within a day.

【2】What kind of feeling does the underlined part “a zing of awe” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.Anxiety.

    B.Sorrow.

    C.Comfort.

    D.Amazement.

【3】Why is Hal Borland’s lines quoted in Paragrapn 3?

A.To express the author’s admiration for the naturalist.

B.To emphasize the importance of getting close to nature.

C.To express the author’s feelings about the leaf-falling season.

D.To emphasize the beauty of the author’s childhood memories.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.The Sky Far Beyond.

    B.The Fall of Massachusetts.

    C.The Beauty of a Newly-bare Tree.

D.The Memories of Peace and Beauty.

  • 24、Honda is developing an in-shoe navigation (导航) system to support the visually impaired (受损的) with walking, and it could be a game-changer.

The Ashirase is a navigation system consisting of a smartphone app and a three-dimensional device including a motion sensor, which is attached inside the shoe. Based on the route set with the app, the device vibrates (振动) to provide navigation. When the user should go straight, the vibrator positioned on the front part of the foot vibrates, and when the user is approaching a right or left turn, the vibrator on the right or left side vibrates to notify the user.

The navigation provided by Ashirase enables the user to understand the routes more easily, and thus the user does not have to be constantly mindful of the direction, which makes it possible for the user to walk more safely and with a more relaxed state of mind. Having navigation provided through vibration on the foot is also useful in that it does not bother the user’s hand which is holding a walking stick, or ears used to listen to surrounding sounds.

Why is a company known for its automobiles getting involved in this area? Because it matters. In Japan alone, the number of people with visual impairment including low vision was estimated to be 1. 64 million as of 2007, and the number is forecast to increase to nearly 2 million by 2030.

With the concept of “navigation which enables safety and a relaxed state of mind for the visually impaired”, Ashirase is being developed as a product which helps the visually impaired reach their destinations safely and have a more independent lifestyle.

Wataru Chino, a designer at Honda, said, “I am sure that we will face many challenges as we work toward the market launch of Ashirase; however, we’re bound to overcome them to realize the freedom of mobility for visually impaired people.”

【1】What does the underlined word “notify” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Protect.

    B.Assess.

    C.Inform.

    D.Stop.

【2】What does paragraph 3 focus on concerning Ashirase?

    A.Its benefits for its users.

    B.Its working principles.

    C.Its potential challenges.

    D.Its future improvements.

【3】Why does Honda choose to develop the navigation system?

A.Most Japanese people expect the company to do so.

B.The company has trouble developing new automobiles.

C.There is an increasing demand from the visually impaired.

D.The company determines to prevent more visual impairment.

【4】What do Wataru Chino’s words suggest?

A.He is confident to make the system accessible.

B.He believes the system will earn much money.

C.He is worried about the future market potential.

D.He finds developing the system less challenging.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Life is Good Clothing is a 100 million-dollar company run by brothers Bert and John Jacobs. Like any other businessmen, they went through a lot of failures. However, the idea

“Life is good” from their mother kept them going and inspired them to build a clothing company that is now very successful.

In 1988, Bert and Jacobs took a seven-week road trip from California to Boston. The brothers said this trip changed their lives forever as they looked back on their childhood. According to the Jacobs, their childhood was perfectly-imperfect. Their house did not have heating but they were taught to always see the good in things.

They remembered playing outside all day and when it was dinner time, they would gather around the dinner table. Their mother would say to them, “Tell me something good that happened today.” Their father had a near — death accident which caused severe damage to his right hand. The accident made their father develop a terrible temper (脾气),but their mother would always sing to them and read them children’s stories. “That optimism was something our family always had, even when we had little else,” the brothers said.

During the trip, they tried to figure out what they wanted to do with their lives and decided to run a clothing business. They started selling T-shirt designs in street fairs around Boston. Their design was just a simple drawing of a stick figure with the phrase “Life is good.”

Their small business didn’t turn out so well, but the two brothers did not give up. Then they changed their target audience. This time, they tried to sell their T-shirts to college students, going to different schools every night. Again it did not work. To figure out what they had been doing wrong, Bert and John held beer parties, where they asked their friends for their honest opinions. In return , they could enjoy free beer and amusing stories from the brothers. Again this did not seem to work and they were running out of money.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
