  • 21、   Modern agriculture and its beauty to feed billions of people may be one of humanity’s greatest achievements. However, it comes with hidden costs. For example, have you ever considered how much water is needed to provide you with a steak or a salad? It may surprise you.

In a recent study published in the journal Nutrients, scientists from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Australia’s national science organization, took a close look at the diets of 9,341 adult Australians-specifically, their “water-scarcity footprints (水消耗足迹)”.

It turns out that a sweet tooth not only adds to our waistlines but also stresses our water resources.

The water-scarcity footprint is a widely recognized measurement of water consumption. First, it counts the liters of water you used. Then, it looks at the place where the water was used. Using a liter of water in the desert is not the same as using a liter of water in a tropical rainforest. The more scarce water is in your area, the larger your water-scarcity footprint.

The scientists found that the average Australian’s diet had a water-scarcity footprint of 362 liters per day. Snacks and beverages-cookies, cakes, sodas and alcohol-accounted for 25 percent of the water-scarcity footprint. The research also included a glass of wine (41 liters), a single serving of potato chips (23 liters), and a small bar of milk chocolate (21 liters).

Not surprisingly, cutting out snacks would be the top priority if you wanted to lower your own water-scarcity.

Earth’s surface is 70 percent water, but only 2.5 percent of that can be used for drinking or farming. While humanity faces an uphill battle to feed its growing population, climate change is causing droughts and extreme weather in agricultural centers like California and eastern Australia.

Cities aren’t safe, either. In 2018, Cape Town, South Africa, nearly ran out of water due to drought. Its freshwater reservoir (水库) stayed at just about 13.5 percent of full capacity.

By 2030, a world of about 8.6 billion people will need 35 percent more water, 40 percent more energy, and 50 percent more food, according to the United States National Intelligence Council.

So, we need to watch what we eat, not just for our personal health but for the health of our societies.

1What did the recent study from CSIRO find?

A.There are many hidden places like lacking water.

B.The foods we consume could cause our water-scarcity footprints to be bigger.

C.Climate change is the leading reason for larger water-scarcity footprints.

D.Eating sweets leads to a smaller water-scarcity footprint.

2What do we know about water-scarcity footprints?

A.They show how much a person affects their local water supply.

    B.They change with a country’s population.

C.They count the amount of water a family wastes.

D.They are mainly used to measure how scarce water is in the desert.

3What can we infer from the last four paragraphs?

A.South Africa is the area with the worst water shortages.

B.We are facing a greater shortage of water than of food.

C.Our eating habits could make a difference to the problem of water shortage.

D.Water shortage may bring about many social problems.

4What’s the best title of the passage?

A.How to get rid of snacks

B.Why we should reduce water waste

C.The more water is, the bigger the water-scarcity footprints are

    D.Water waste starts with snacks

  • 22、   Sudoku (数独) puzzles give your brain a hard time: Every number from 1 to 9 must appear in each of the nine horizontal (横向的) rows, in each of the nine vertical columns and in each of the nine boxes.

For many of us, this can be a reason for a headache, but in the very rare case of a German man, a Sudoku puzzle even caused seizures (痉挛).

In a new case study from the University of Munich, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Dr. Berend Feddersen introduces a student who was 25 years old when he was buried by a snow slide during a ski tour. For 15 minutes, he didn’t get enough oxygen, which severely damaged certain parts of his brain. “He had to receive treatment on the scene. Luckily he survived,” says Feddersen, the author of the study.

Weeks after the accident, when the young man was ready for recovery treatment, something bizarre happened: When the patient solved Sudoku puzzles, he suddenly had seizures of his left arm — something the medical world hadn’t seen before.

Feddersen explains: “In order to solve a Sudoku, the patient used parts of his brain which are responsible for vision-space tasks. But exactly those brain parts had been damaged in the accident and then caused the seizures once they were used.”

This particular case is an example of what doctors call reflex epilepsy (反射性癫痫), according to Dr. Jacqueline French, professor from NYU Langone School of Medicine.

“You have to have an injury of your brain first, and then seizures like that can happen,” she says.

In the meantime, the patient from the case study stopped solving Sudoku puzzles forever and has been seizure-free for more than five years. “Fortunately, he can do crossword puzzles. He never had problems with those,” Feddersen says.

1In the accident, the student ______.

    A. began to experience seizures in his left arm

    B. got the vision-space part of his brain damaged

    C. had to be sent to hospital as soon as possible

    D. found his Sudoku ability seriously weakened

2It can be learned from the text that ______.

    A. the man cannot complete crossword puzzles now

    B. it is Sudoku playing that brings about his seizures

    C. the man’s symptoms are common and widely observed

    D. the seizures cause much trouble to the man’s daily life

3This text can be best described as______.

    A. a medical test B. a warning to skiers

    C. a news report D. a research paper

  • 23、Teenage years are one of the most exciting yet confusing stages in a person’s life. 【1】 You are at a time of exploration, trying to find out your preferences.one of which, is your pastime.

Some pastimes have no moral implications. For example, shall we play basketball or soccer? However, there are other choices that need to be made based on your values, beliefs and principles in life. Some examples include attending a party where there will be alcohol and drugs freely given out, lying to your parents or even skipping school to watch a movie with some friends. 【2】 Are you tempted to follow them?

Wanting to feel part of a group may force you to do things against your better judgement 【3】 You may be afraid to refuse for fear of losing friends. If your friends are true friends, they will respect your decision and not force you to join them.

There are some steps you may take to avoid negative peer pressure. Firstly, stay away from friends who force you to do things that you know are wrong 【4】 Next, be true to yourself and stand up for what you believe in. And if a situation gets out of hand, do not hesitate to approach an adult you trust for help.

It may not always be easy to resist peer pressure, but do know that you will feel good about yourself later. And you may have been a motivation in your group to bring about a positive change. 【5】

    A.How do you respond?

B.You expect peer pressure to work.

C.Others may just follow your lead

D.Don’t be afraid to stand up to that pressure.

E.You are no longer a child, yet not quite an adult.

F.However, it is okay to reject anything potentially hurtful to you or others.

G.Spend time with those who share the same values and principles instead.

  • 24、   A satellite is about to demonstrate a new way of capturing space junk with magnets for the first time. With the frequency of space launches dramatically increasing in recent years, the potential for a disastrous collision above Earth is continually growing. Now, Japanese orbital clean-up company Astroscale is testing a potential solution.

The firm's End-of-Life Services by Astroscale demonstration mission is scheduled to lift off on 20 March aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket. It consists of two spacecraft: a smal “client” satellite and a larger “servicer” satellite, or “chaser”. The smaller satellite is equipped with a magnetic (磁力的) plate which allows the chaser to dock with it.

The two stacked spacecraft will perform three tests once in orbit, each of which will involve the servicer satellite releasing and then recapturing the client satellite. The first test will be the simplest, with the client satellite drifting a short distance away and then being recaptured. In the second test, the servicer satellite will set the client satellite tumbling before catching up with it and matching its motion to grab it.

Finally, if those two tests go well, the chaser will live up to its name by letting the client satellite float a few hundred metres away before finding it and attaching to it. All of these tests will be performed autonomously, with little to no human input once they are set in motion.

“These kinds of demonstrations have never been done before in space - they are very different to, say, an astronaut controlling a robotic arm on the International Space Station,” says Jason Forshaw at Astroscale UK.“This is more of an autonomous mission.” At the end of the tests, both spacecraft will burn up in Earth's atmosphere.

If companies wanted to use this capability, they would have to attach a magnetic plate to their satellites so they could be captured later. Because of the growing space garbage problem, many countries now require firms to have a way to bring back their satellites once they run out of fuel or fail, so this could be a fairly simple likely plan, Forshaw says. Right now, each chaser can only nab one satellite, but Astroscale is working on a version that could drag three or four out of orbit at once.

【1】Which of the following can replace the underlined word "dock with" in Paragraph 2?

    A.Deal with.

    B.Keep up with.

    C.Join together.

    D.Crash.

【2】Why many countries now require firms to have a way to bring back their satellites?

A.Because of the growing space waste problem.

B.Because the frequency of space launches are dramatically increasing.

C.Because they can earn large profits from it.

D.Because Astroscale has found a new method of capturing the space garbage.

【3】What will Astroscale do to solve the space junk problem?

A.An astronaut controls a robotic arm on the International Space to capture the “client” satellite.

B.Through a magnetic plate remotely controlled by humans on the ground to catch the “client” satellite.

C.Finding the "client "satellite and attaching to it with a magnetic plate automatically.

D.Tumbling to match the motion of “client satellite the drag three or four satellites out of its orbit into atmosphere.

【4】What can we infer from the passage?

A.People will bum the space junk up in Earth's atmosphere in the future.

B.Japan and Russia will conduct space debris cleanup experiment together.

C.These kinds of demonstrations have never been done before.

D.The demonstration mission will be divided into three phases.

  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point'(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

These days, its not unusual to see middle-aged men collecting Star Wars action figures, office workers wearing Hello Kitty accessories, or celebrities like David Beckham playing with Lego bricks, it's becoming more and more common to see adult taking an interest in toys, comic books and the activities that are traditionally associated with children. This phenomenon has given rise to a new word: kidult.

What lies behind the phenomenon? One is about adults' nostalgia(怀旧)for the carefree days of childhood, and this is especially true with today's fast-paced, stressful lifestyles. Another is about a societal change in recent decades where people are starting families later. As a result, they have more time and money to spend on themselves. Some adults could only window-shop for their dream toys when they were kids, but now they can afford that radio-controlled car or high-priced doll they have always wanted.

Society traditionally disapproves of adults who refuse to put aside childhood interests, viewing the refusal as a sign of social immaturity (不成熟) and irresponsibility. Those who agree with this view sometimes claim that kidults are suffering from the pop-psychology concept known as Peter Pan Syndrome, an anomaly(异常)that people remain emotionally at the level of teenagers.

From the standpoint of kidults, though, this phenomenon is seen as nothing but harmless fun. Kidults insist that having youthful interests keeps them young, happy and creative, and their refusal to conform to society's acccptable tastes shows independent thinking. Besides, they argue that being part of the social trend of delayed adulthood is not purely a personal choice. The real causes include expensive housing, increased educational requirements for employment and poor work opportunities.
