21、Prom tradition comes to UK
Proms (正式舞会) are big news in Britain these days. A school prom is a formal party to celebrate an important date at school such as the end of secondary school or after completing school exams. A secondary school prom often involves a big party, big dresses and huge cars.
Prom parties
Proms are held in June or July, around the end of exam time. The idea is to lave fin with your school friends and celebrate your time and achievements at school. Some schools hold a luxury party in a five-star hotel. Others have a more basic dinner in the school hall. The school can organize the prom or they can pay a professional organization to arrange it. A prom organizer provides everything for the special event including the party location, balloons, food, music, cars and clothes.
Clothes and beauty
Young people like to dress up for their prom. On prom night girls swap their school uniform for an elegant evening dress and high heels. Boys usually dress up in a suit with a tie and smart shoes. The right hairstyle and makeup are important too. Some beauty salons offer a special “prom deal” which includes hair, makeup, eyelashes, nails and a spray tan (喷雾染肤色). A tan is fashionable with both boys and girls.
Money
The school prom is big business; the average prom costs parents over£200 per teenager. Not all families have money to spend on their teenager's prom, of course. Some teenagers work part-tine to cover their prom expenses. Popular jobs include babysitting, shop work and working as a waiter or waitress.
An American tradition
Not long ago most British schools didn't have school proms. They probably had a simple school disco at the end of term. Now, more than 85 percent of schools in Britain have a prom. However, the modern British school prom is not popular with some parents of teenagers. Many adults see the prom as an import from the USA. They say that American TV programs and films such as High School Musial have a big influence on their kids.

22、In Kansas City,Missouri,a computer helps firefighters. The computer, which works very fast, has information about all the 350,000 street addresses in the city.Within two or three seconds after a call is received, the computer provides necessary information for the firefighters. The information is then sent to them by radio from the computer centre in the City Hall. The exact place of the burning building and its size, type and any other details are clear to them.

23、A diet to save humankind
When I was a child my family would always sit down together for meals. My favourite was among the simplest: pasta in tomato sauce. We ate fresh vegetables and fruit, and, starting in our teenage years, sipped a glass of red wine. We ate together. I indulged with a few slices of prosciutto and practised a wide variety of outdoor sports. This centuries-old Mediterranean diet kept me fit and trim - and turned out to be good not just for my personal well-being, but for the planet's health too.
In 2021 we will celebrate the tenth anniversary of UNESCO's designation of this Mediterranean diet as a “Cultural Heritage of Humanity”. 【1】 We have started to eat more fast food and have increased our portions. Fewer Italians enjoy social meals with family and friends. Italian children were among the most overweight in a recent study of 30 countries.
Poor nutrition is a global problem, not just an Italian one. The fact that it's hitting Italy, the land where the Mediterranean diet originated, represents a dangerous paradox — one of many afflicting the world of food. After years of decline, hunger is back on the rise. Globally, some 821m people still do not have enough to eat. Yet while the poor south starves, the rich north gorges: some 2bn people are overweight or obese. We waste one-third of global food production. 【2】
【3】 The world's population is expected to increase by 2.3bn people by 2050, fuelling demand for meat. Since the end of the second world war the global food system has focused on producing more food for more people — but then wastes huge amounts of it. A paradigm shift is needed. Production must concentrate on delivering better, more nutritious food. The UN's Sustainable Development Goals can show us the way. They aim to “end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture”. These goals are ambitious but achievable.
Governments must provide incentives to support sustainable agriculture, slash food waste and meet nutritional challenges. This does not just mean taxing unhealthy foods. 【4】 Companies must not be short-sighted, either. They should support legislation requiring them to embrace sustainability.
We must change our diet. A food and environment pyramid which highlights the close links between food's nutritional value and environmental impact has been devised. This “double pyramid” is based on the traditional Mediterranean diet of my childhood. Everyone can and must continue to have fun at the dinner table — while eating what is good for our health and our planet.
A.Without a change in our diets, this disastrous cycle will worsen.
B.Farmers should use fertilizers more efficiently and reduce costs.
C.It is a diet lull of vegetables, fruits and whole grains, with only occasional meat.
D.Livestock consume an estimated two-thirds of all the land dedicated to agriculture and contribute about half of farming-related greenhouse-gas emissions.
E.Unfortunately, Italians have been turning away from their traditional healthy diet.
F.A more effective policy is to make healthy food, accessible and affordable for consumers and profitable for farmers.
