Scholarship Application Tips in 2018 for college students |
• Before you apply Work hard to get good grades. Don’t sweat about one bad grade, but always strive to do your best. Get involved, and stay involved, in out-of-class activities. Sports, clubs, drama, bands and orchestras — these often count toward a student’s overall scholarship application evaluation. The same goes for paid (or unpaid) work experience. Begin your scholarship research early — by your sophomore or junior year of high school, if possible. Make special note of application deadlines, as they can vary from late summer to late spring. Apply for as many scholarships as you are eligible for — several smaller scholarships can add up to a lot of money. • During the application process Read the supplementary materials that come with scholarship application forms to better understand the program’s focus (community service, subject interest). Try to answer the questions with the focus area in mind. Answer questions as they are asked. Don’t go off topic. If there is a financial section to the application, make sure you get accurate and complete information from all appropriate sources to ensure your eligibility. Take your time. Write down everything you can think of for each question, then set the application aside for a day so you can look everything over again before you send it off. Don’t wait until the last minute to complete your application, especially if you are applying online. Computer systems can get blocked with the large volume of applicants hoping to submit their qualifications during the last few days and hours before a deadline. If a third party has to complete part of your application, such as providing a letter of recommendation, make sure you ask them early on and remind them as often as necessary to ensure they provide you with the necessary materials. Last but not least, review your application with your parents to make sure you haven’t left out any important details. Good luck to the students applying for the 2018 scholarship programs! |

22、 Feeling tired? Under too much stress? Well, you may want to try Yoga. It’s what more and more people have been turning to to release the trouble of modern life. Practically unheard of in the West until 50 years ago, Yoga has become one of the most popular health trends around the world, including China. If you search for Yoga on line in Chinese, lots of pages are there to see, most of which are main pages of Yoga clubs. In order to keep fit and lose weight, many girls spend more than 1000 yuan taking part in Yoga classes every month.
However, are you really ready for it? There are several things you need to know before you really take it.
First, do not force your body too much. Yoga has many difficult poses. They are beautiful and worth boasting if you could finish them. But if you force yourself to do as exactly as an experienced Yoga teacher does, you may hurt your body, instead of strengthening it. Do you remember you original purpose for playing Yoga? It is self -building, not competing.
Second, do some research about the Yoga class that you are to register. Yoga is new in China and there are not so many certificated well-trained Yoga teachers. Some not well-organized clubs just find someone who learns a little Yoga and certificate them. But be aware, a non-eligible teacher might wrongly guide you and you could not benefit from the classes much except that they force you to exercise your body a bit. Considering about the large amount of money you invest in it, it’s worth and reasonable to make sure the teachers in the club are qualified before you join.
Third, it would be better to learn something about nutrition when you practice Yoga. In the very beginning, Yoga was part of the Vedas, bible of the traditional Indian philosophy. So it could be regarded as a kind of lifestyle. When you have decided to care for your body, why not feed it properly? In fact, good clubs have their own nutritionists.
Anyhow, make sure you are ready before you act. The fashion may change quickly. But what benefits is still good for us.

23、The story of the most sustainable pair of jeans is also the story of a family whose members have dedicated their lives to denim innovation. It is the great-great-grandson of the family business founder who has brought Candiani and whole fashion industry to new heights by creating the first fully biodegradable stretch denim.
Alberto Candiani, the current owner of Candiani, created the first fully biodegradable jeans using a plant-based yarn obtained from natural rubber. Once the innovative denim came to life, a brand new pair of jeans was put to the test by being buried in forest land for six months. At the end of that period, Candiani’s team discovered the fibers had almost fully broken down. The new technology is called Coreva. “These garments are extremely durable, but at the end of their life, you could send them back to us and we recycle them, or you could fertilize your vegetables with them,” Alberto Candiani said.
Jeans generate an environmental impact that has become a real global challenge. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, it takes around 2000 gallons of water to make a typical pair of jeans. And during production, around 71 pounds of carbon dioxide are released. What’s more, most jeans are manufactured with stretch denim made with plastic, which can take hundreds of years to degrade.
But by creating a circular model in which fabrics are biodegradable at the end of their lifecycle, tons of garments can be prevented from ending up in landfills. Candiani has not only achieved this by going plastic-free, but the manufacturer has also reduced water use by 75 percent and the use of chemicals by 65 percent. Although Candiani creates a product that is about double the price of traditional denim due to the higher labor and more manufacturing costs involved, business is booming. Not only has the company tripled its production, but its motto of “the greenest mill in the blue world” is credible.

24、 Overly focusing on your goals may actually be counterproductive in the long run. Take it from an Olympic athlete.
After Brenda Martinez, a US Olympic runner, lost her balance in the 800-meter run, she lost the race that would qualify her for the Olympics. Instead of focusing on her failure, she prepared to win in the next race. “The track doesn’t care about your feelings,” she told New York Magazine Intelligence. “You’ve just got to move forward.” She did indeed move forward and ended up winning third place in the 1500-meter race a week later to qualify for the Olympics in Rio. Instead of attaching herself to the goal of making the Olympic team, she concentrated on the process.
Researchers from Harvard found that overemphasizing goals based on measurable outcomes often leads to risk-taking, improper behavior and reduced motivation.
When you become overly focused on achieving the goal, you may lose sight of your original purpose for accomplishing the goal in the first place. Another danger is actually completing the goal without setting a plan for what’s next. For example, some marathon runners experience what’s called the “post-race blues”. Achieving your goal may cause you to drop the good habits that got you there in the first place.
“After you set a goal, it’s best to shift your focus from the goal itself to the process that gives you the best chance of achieving it; and to judge yourself based on how well you manage that process,” columnist Brad Stulberg said.
Ultimately, changing your mindset from goals to process will lead you to achieve small victories on your way to accomplishing long-term goals. It leaves you with a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment, regardless of the measurable outcome.
【1】What does the underlined word “counterproductive” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Influential.
B.Harmful.
C.Satisfying.
D.Unpredictable.
【2】What does the writer want to tell us by referring to Brenda Martinez’s story?
A.The ways to deal with failure.
B.The process matters more.
C.Determination means a lot for an athlete.
D.The consequence of making the right decision.
【3】Why may some marathon runners experience the “post-race blues”?
A.Because they are satisfied with their achievements.
B.Because they haven’t gained what they want.
C.Because they haven’t got a further plan.
D.Because they lose sight of their original purpose.
【4】What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.How to set a long-term goal.
B.The way to realize your aim.
C.The benefits of fixing on the process.
D.How to shift your focus from goal to process.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mary tried to hold her breath. She moved away slightly, but Amy only moved closer and continued talking.
Mary thought to herself, “Why does she always have to sit next to me?” Amy didn’t seem to notice that Mary was trying to move away, and she leaned in closer. Mary wanted badly to tell Amy that she didn’t smell very good, but how could she without hurting her feelings?
When Mary got home from school, she complained to her mother. “There’s a girl named Amy who likes to sit next to me in school, but she smells bad. Nobody else likes to sit next to her, either.”
“Well, try to be nice to her,” said her mother. “Maybe she’s having a hard time at home. You never know what a person’s home life is like.”
For the rest of the week, Mary tried to be a good friend to Amy. There were times when they had fun talking and playing together, especially on the days when Amy bathed. But on the days when she smelled bad, Mary still found it very hard to be her friend.
One morning, while getting her hair combed for school, Mary brought the subject up again with her mother.
“I don’t want to be friends with Amy anymore,” she told her mother.
Her mother’s hands froze in midair. Mary turned to see what the matter was. Her mother looked upset. Mary wondered what she had said made her mother react this way.
“I don’t think you understand Amy’s situation, so let me ask you this…” Her mother’s tone was serious. “Who makes sure that your hair is combed every morning so you’ll look nice when you go to school? Who makes sure you’re bathed and cleaned every day? And your clothes are washed and neatly ironed?”
“You and Daddy,” answered Mary.
“Do you live in a happy family? Do you have a good Dad and Mum?” Then her mother encouraged her to learn more about Amy before she decided whether or not to be friends with Amy.
