二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项.

By now, we are all aware that social media has had a tremendous influence on our culture, in

business, on the world-at-large. Social media websites revolutionized the way people communicate and socialize on the Web. However, aside from seeing your friends’ new baby on Facebook, or reading about Justin Bieber’s latest conflict with the law on Twitter, what are some of the real influences?

Social networks offer the opportunity for people to re-connect with their old friends and acquaintances, make new friends, share ideas and pictures, and many other activities. Users can keep pace with the latest global and local developments, and participate in campaigns and activities of their choice. Professionals use social media sites like LinkedIn to enhance their career and business development. Students can work together with their peers to improve their academic and communication skills.

Unfortunately, there are a few downsides too to social networking. If you are not careful, immoral people can target you for cyber bullying and disturbance on social sites. School children, young girls, and women can fall victim to online attacks which can create tension and suffering. If you are a victim of cyber bullying, do not take it lying down, but try to take appropriate legal action against the attacker.

Many companies have blocked social networks as addicted employees can distract themselves on such sites, instead of focusing on work. In fact, studies show that British companies have lost billions of dollars per year in productivity because of social media addiction among employees.

Also, what you carelessly post on the Net can come back to trouble you. Revealing( 泄露) personal information on social sites can make users vulnerable(易受伤害的)to crimes like identity theft, stalking, etc. Many companies perform a background check on the Web before hiring an employee. If a potential employee has posted something embarrassing on social media, it can greatly affect their chances of getting the job. The same holds true for our relationships too, as our loved ones and friends may get to know if we post something undesirable on social networks.

Social media has its advantages and drawbacks as each coin has two sides. It is up to each user

to use social sites wisely to enhance their professional and social life, and exercise caution to ensure

they do not fall victim to online dangers.

【1】Paragraph 2 mainly shows that social networks _________.

    A. take legal action against the attackers

    B. avoid posting embarrassing information

    C. refuse to hire potential addicted employees

    D. forbid the use of social networks during work time

【3】The main purpose of this passage is to _________.

    A. share experiences in using social media

    B. provide some advice on social problems

    C. raise public awareness of social problems

  • 22、   Scientists have long known a fairly reliable way to extend life span in rodents(啮齿类动物) and other lab animals: Reduce the amount of calories they eat by 10 percent to 40 percent.

This strategy known as caloric restriction, has been shown to increase the life span of various organisms and reduce their rate of cancer and other age-related ailments. Whether it can do the same in people has been an open question. But an intriguing new study suggests that in young and middle-aged adults, chronically(慢性地) restricting calorie intake can have an impact on their health.

In the new study, researchers looked at a group of 143 healthy men and women who were instructed to practice caloric restriction for two years, with the aim of cutting the calories they consumed by 25 percent.

On average, the dieters managed to slash about 12 percent of their total calories, or roughly 300 calories a day, the amount in a few chocolate chip cookies or a small Starbucks Mocha. But the group saw many of their health markers improve.

They lost weight and body fat. Their blood pressure fell slightly, and they had better blood sugar control and less inflammation. At the same time, a control group of 75 healthy people who did not practice caloric restriction saw no improvements in any of these markers. Some of the benefits in the calorie restricted group stemmed from the fact that they lost a large amount of weight. However, the results of the survey suggest that caloric restriction might have some unique biological effects on disease pathways in the body.

Calorie restriction may be a useful tool for better health and weight loss, but it’s unclear whether the changes in the new study will ultimately translate into longevity and reductions in chronic disease, said Frank Hu, the chairman of the nutrition department at the Harvard, who was not involved in the research.

1What happened to the lab animals, after the amount of calories was reduced?

    A.More lab animals got cancers.

B.More Lab animals can live longer.

C.Health condition of lab animals got worse.

D.Lab animals will suffer from no disease in their future life.

2From the study, after caloric restriction, what happened to the 143 people?

    A.Their healthy markers improved.

B.They did not get chronic diseases.

C.They did not get lose any weight at all.

D.They did not eat chocolate chip cookies.

3Which work has the similar meaning to the underline word, slash?

    A.Reduce. B.Increase.

    C.Add. D.Beat.

4From Frank Hu’s words, what can be inferred?

A.Calorie restriction is beneficial to weight loss.

B.People with caloric restriction will love longer than others.

C.More people should be encouraged to take caloric restriction in life.

D.The relation between caloric restriction and longer lifespan is uncertain.

  • 23、People use laughter to connect and bond with others. It’s how we tell friends that their jokes are funny. 【1】 And as a universal expression, laughter can be recognized even if it comes from people belonging to different cultures or speaking different languages.

What about other animals? 【2】 And they eventually identified 65 species that laugh while playing. Among them, the animals that laugh the most include primates (灵长类动物) like monkeys, rodents (啮齿动物) like rats, and mammals that live in the ocean like dolphins. Here are some findings of the scientists:

When compared to human laughs, animal laughter sounds very different, especially between different animals. While vervet monkeys (长尾猴) make a purring sound in playing, squirrel monkeys produce a soft peeping sound. 【3】

【4】 This is important because animal play can sometimes look like fighting. Laughter becomes a way for animals to prevent aggressive or harmful behavior when interacting with others. Some animals also make a “play face”, giving an expression like a smile to show that they are happy and not angry.

Most primates make sounds of “he he” and smack their lips when playing. This might help explain where human laughter comes from. 【5】 Over time, we changed the way we originally laughed, making sounds from “he he” to “ho ho ho”. Now, humans generally follow the pattern of “ha ha ha” to vocalize laughter.

A.This is an issue that has not been settled so far.

B.It’s also how kids show that they are having fun.

C.For many animals, laughter is a way to start play.

D.Bottlenose dolphins whistle while they swim and jump together.

E.Many animals laugh so that their play partners know they are having fun.

F.Experts believe that humans may have started off laughing like some monkeys do.

G.This is just what the scientists from the University of California tried to find out recently.

  • 24、When you want advice to achieve something, whom would you rather ask: the top performer in that area or someone barely getting by? Most people would choose the top performer. That person’s advice, however, may not be any more helpful.

“Skillful performance and skillful teaching are not always the same thing, so we shouldn’t expect the best performers to necessarily be the best teachers as well,” said David Levari (Harvard Business School), lead author of a recent Psychological Science article.

Across four studies, he and co-authors found that top performers don’t give better advice than other performers, at least in some domains(领域). Rather, they just give more of it. “Our studies suggest that at least in some instances, people may overvalue advice from top performers,” the researchers wrote.

“In our experiments, people given advice by top performers thought that it helped them more, even though it usually didn’t. Surprisingly, they thought so even though they didn't know anything about the people who wrote their advice,” said Levari. “Top performers didn’t write more helpful advice, but they did write more of it, and people in our experiments mistook quantity for quality,” Levari added.

So, why wasn’t the advice more helpful? Levari and colleagues have a few ideas. First, skilled performers may overlook fundamental advice because natural talent and extensive practice have made conscious thought unnecessary. Second, top performers may not be skilled communicators. Even when an excellent performer does have explicit information to share, they may not be especially good at sharing it. Finally, a large quantity of advice may be more than what can realistically be carried out.

“We spend a lot of time and money looking for good advice, whether from coworkers and coaches, teachers and tutors, or friends and family,” said Levari. “The next time you get advice, you should think less about how much of it there was, and more about how much of it you could actually use.”

【1】How did the author introduce the topic of the text?

    A.By comparing data.

    B.By raising a question.

    C.By describing a definition.

    D.By presenting the survey result.

【2】Which of the following agrees with Levari’s opinion?

    A.Top performers give poor advice.

    B.Top performers give better advice.

    C.Top performers give useful advice.

    D.Top performers give more advice.

【3】What did Levari suggest people do when getting advice?

    A.Learn about its writer.

    B.Consider its practicality.

    C.Think less about its quality.

    D.Find more related information.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.Top Performers Can Be Trusted

B.Trying Common Performers' Advice Is Great

C.Common Performers May Give More Advice

D.Top Performers Don't Always Give Better Advice
