  • 21、Helpful ways to deal with a know-it-all friend

Helpful ways to deal with a know-it-all friend

Sometimes having a friend who thinks she knows everything and always offers her unsolicited (主动提供的) advice can really make one upset. But with some ways to deal with know-it-all, you can easily cope with that friend. Also a know-it-all friend often acts as if she were the best. 【1】

【2】. There may be a reason why your know-it-all friend does so. Maybe she has low self-esteem (自尊), or she’s not happy in her life. Try to understand her and understand why she acts the way that she does This tip is very important, especially if the know-it-all is your best friend.

Give her a little attention. Giving a little attention is one of the best ways to deal with a know-it-all friend. Show some enthusiasm about what the know-it-all says to give her enough attention. 【3】 Or this can lead to her giving more unsolicited advice.

Don’t take her comments personally. 【4】 Instead of thinking that something is not okay with you, never fake her comments and advice personally. If you do so, you may really begin to become unnecessarily anxious.

Have a talk with her. If you’re sick and tired of all those unsolicited advice, come right out with it. Speak politely and don’t insult her. Try to find a good time to talk to her. 【5】 Tell your know-it-all friend how it makes you feel and maybe she will respond well.

    A.Try to understand

B.Feel free to ignore her all the time

C.However, make sure you don’t overdo it.

D.Try not to go to those places where you think she’ll be.

E.If you have such a friend, here are a few tips on coping with her.

  • 22、   We’ve known for years that plants can see, hear, smell and communicate with chemicals. Now, reported New Scientist, they have been recorded making sounds when stressed.

In a yet-to-be-published study, Itzhak Khait and his team at Tel Aviv University, in Israel, found that tomato and tobacco plants can make ultrasonic(超声的)noises. The plants “cry out” due to lack of water, or when their stems are cut. It’s just too high-pitched(音调高的)for humans to hear.

Microphones placed 10 centimeters away from the plants picked up sounds in the ultrasonic range of 20 to 100 kilohertz(千赫兹). Human hearing usually ranges from 20 hertz to 20 kilohertz. “These findings can alter the way we think about the plant kingdom,” they wrote.

On average, “thirsty” tomato plants made 35 sounds an hour, while tobacco plants made 11. When plant stems were cut, tomato plants made an average of 25 sounds in the following hour, and tobacco plants 15. Unstressed plants produced fewer than one sound per hour, on average.

Perhaps most interestingly, different types of stress led to different sounds. The researchers trained a machine-learning model to separate the plants’ sounds from those of the wind, rain and other noises of the greenhouse. In most cases, it correctly identified whether the stress was caused by dryness or a cut, based on a sound’s intensity and frequency. Water-hungry tobacco appears to make louder sounds than cut tobacco, for example. Although Khait and his colleagues only looked at tomato and tobacco plants, they think other plants also make sounds when stressed.

If farmers could hear these sounds, said the team, they could give water to the plants that need it most. As climate change causes more droughts, they said this would be important information for farmers. “The sounds that drought-stressed plants make could be used in precision agriculture(精准农业),” said Anne Visscher at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in the UK.

Khait’s report also suggests that insects and mammals can hear the sounds up to 5 meters away and respond. For example, a moth may decide not to lay eggs on a water-stressed plant. Edward Farmer, at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, is doubtful. He said that the idea of moths listening to plants is “a little too speculative”.

If plants are screaming for fear of their survival, should we be thankful we can’t hear them?

1What did Khait and his team find from their research?

A.Plants made low-pitched sounds when in danger.

B.Plants were able to produce sounds in response to stresses.

C.Plants picked up a wider range of sounds when stressed.

D.Plants made ultrasonic noises to communicate with each other.

2How did tomato and tobacco plants react to different stresses according to the text?

A.A plant reacted to different stresses with the same sound.

B.Cut tobacco plants seemed to make weaker sounds than drought-stressed ones.

C.Cut tomato plants produced more sounds per hour than water-hungry ones.

D.Tobacco plants might make louder sounds than tomato plants when short of water.

3What’s the main idea of Paragraph 6?

A.Challenges facing farmers in the future.

    B.Farmers’ contributions to the research.

C.The potential applications of the research.

D.What the future agriculture will be like.

4What is Edward Farmert’s attitude towards the research?

    A.negative B.positive

    C.neutral D.indifferent

  • 23、   To empower students to succeed and make a difference in the 21st century educatorbusiness leaders and recent college graduates agree that students have to be better prepared through a liberal well rounded education and the ability to apply their skills and knowledge to hands-on real-world learning experiences.College learning for the New Global Century a recent report released by the National Leadership Council for Liberal Education and America's Proms e(LEAP) covered specific areas in which institutions can help students prepare for the transition into the workforce.

87 percent interviewed agree that America's colleges and universities need to raise the quality of student achievement to ensure the United States remains competitive.“There is a need to connect what businesses corporations and employers want and what colleges offer to meet real-world challenges.”explain Cruncher.“We have to stop channeling students into a narrow field. We need to teach them to think critically write well and be a team player with global awareness in order to be a viable(surviving independently) contributor to the business or nonprofit sectors.”

In a previous report the council began to address the types of skills graduates need to have. The outcomesbesides having a main focus or line of education they would a so have to think critically and write well.On the negative side they found there was a basic disconnection about

the type of education students needed to pull this off.“It was a pleasant for members on the board that many of us were on the same page.It became the basis for his current report.”

The College Learning report show show val y important a liberal education is says Humphreys.“We can focus on what business leaders want and argue for a broader-vision education. To produce responsible citizens in a complex society with global emphasis we must teach important skills that are marketable.Employers want students to talk about the experiences that brought their education to life.”Business executives place the greatest emphasis on what they look for when evaluating the skills of potential new hires and 69  percent of employers said combining broad knowledge with more in-depth focus is“very important.” Employers were somewhat c once med about recent college graduates not having necessary specific job or technical skills but agree that“he technical can be taught.“They expressed the greatest frustration with the challenges of finding“360-degree people.”Crutcher agrees.“That's what it means to be flexible. The mind has to be quick or you will be left behind.”

So what more do employers really want from recent college graduates?“They want students who can function in groups work in teams write criticallyhave analytical reasoning, and communicate effectively”says  Humphreys.“Keep in mind the most important thing-the world is changing-becoming more global and more connected because of technology and we have to change with it.Emphasize undergraduate research.Less memorizing.Put into action what you're learning. Both business leaders and recent graduates say engaged learning is key to continued success in the workforce.”

Employers appear to support the recommendations. Both employers and recent graduates stress the need for colleges to integrate skills and knowledge of a major to broader areas of study and to apply both to real-world settings and situations through community service internships and study-abroad experiences for example.

They strongly endorse the concept of a liberal education and producing good citizens. It also helps if students develop a sense of social responsibly through practical skills that span all areas of study such as communications.

A strong work ethic(道德准则) and sense of loyalty promises greater dividends(回报) for the employer and possible greater success for the individual. This type of graduate is a good investment for an employer and can have along-range impact not only on self-growth but on business development and the community at large.

1What does the report released by LEAP focus on?

A.College students' application of skills and knowledge.

B.College students' preparation for the entry into workforce.

C.College students' desire for well-rounded education.

D.College students' ability to learn real-world experience.

  • 24、   At the first Olympic marathon in 1896, athletes ran a shorter course than today's 42.2-kilometer event. Even so, only the winner finished within three hours. However, runners have improved, and one expert predicted last year that the two-hour mark would be broken in 2028.

On Oct 12, Eliud Kipchoge came in ahead of schedule – literally. The 34-year-old Olympic champion from Kenya became the first person to run a marathon in less than two hours. Clocking in at 1:59:40, Kipchoge pumped his chest and even sped up after crossing the finish line as he ran happily to his wife. 'No one is limited. This shows the positivity of sport, ' Kipchoge told the BBC after the race in Vienna, Austria. 'Together when we run, we can make it a beautiful world. '

Apart from Kipchoge's strong willpower and outstanding physical condition, a few tricks of science and technology helped him reach this milestone in human athletic achievement.

Hills and turns slow runners down, so Kipchoge's team picked the course in Vienna for its gentle curves (弯曲度).

The city's cool and dry weather was also important, said Wired. The magazine talked to exercise physiologists, who think the weather helped keep Kipchoge's body running more efficiently throughout the race.

A special pair of shoes also played a big part. According to The New York Times, the shoes Kipchoge wore were designed to give a significant edge (优势) to anyone wearing them in a race.

One other key to this breakthrough was Kipchoge's pacing strategy. He ran with a dream team of pacers, deployed by sports scientists. Five runners formed a V-shape ahead of Kipchoge, reducing drag (阻力), and two runners followed directly behind to push him forward. Kipchoge stayed in the center of the formation. The team rotated (轮换) members every five kilometers, and he stayed under a two-hour pace for almost the entire length of the race. There was also a pace car driving 15 meters in front of everyone, casting a laser (激光) line on the road to keep them on track.

'Few world records today are technology free, ' noted The Telegraph. Hard work and dedication are still the core (核心) of athletic achievement, but science and technology are helping modern athletes maximize their potential.

1Which of the following statements is true according to the first two paragraphs?

A.42.2-kilometer marathon first started in 1896.

B.Eliud Kipchoge is predicted to break the record in 2028.

C.Eliud Kipchoge won the Olympic champion at 1:59:40.

D.Eliud Kipchoge from Kenya set a new marathon record in less than two hour.

2What factor does not benefit Eliud Kipchoge in the challenge?

  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Students in the United States are assigned to classes for different goals. Those in the more advantaged tracks and programs not only encounter more curricular material; they are also typically asked to learn the material differently. They have opportunities to think, investigate, and create. They are challenged to explore. In Keeping Track, Jeannie Oakes describes the way in which teachers differently frame their work for students in different tracks.

Teachers of high-track classes describe their class goals in terms of higher-order thinking and independent learning, for example: “Logical thought process”; “Scientific reasoning and logic”. Students’ view of what they learned in class reflect these goals. High-track students said they learned: “To understand concepts and ideas and to experiment with them, and to work independently”; “How to express myself through writing and compose my thoughts in a logical manner and express my creativity.”

Conversely, in low-track classes, teachers described few academic goals for their students and none related to thinking logically, critically or independently. They often focused on low-level skills, for example: “Better use of time”; “Punctuality and self-discipline”; “Good work habits”. And low-track students said they had learned how to: “Behave in class”; “How to shut up”; “How to listen and follow the directions of the teacher.”

This phenomenon is widespread. In his research in New York City, Jonathan Kozol described how, within integrated schools, minority children were disproportionately assigned to special education class that occupy small corners and split classrooms, while gifted and talented classrooms occupied the most splendid spaces filled with books and computers, where they learned, in the children’s words, “logical thinking,” and “problem solving”. Students were recommended for these classes by their teachers and parents as well as by their test scores. Kozol wrote in his notes,“Six girls, four boys, nine white, one Chinese. I am glad they have this class. But what about the others? Aren’t there ten black children in the school who could enjoy this also?”
