21、Paris
Passengers carried per day: 4.4m
Cost of ticket: 80p flat fare
Length: 131 miles Lines: 14 Stations: 297
In Paris there are pleasures for those who use the Metro(地铁) — many of them artistic. The graceful Art Nouveau dragon-fly entrances are just the most noticeable on a Metro system which celebrated its 100th anniversary by spending 30 million francs (£2.9million) on making its stations works of art. On my way home I pass Bonne Nouvelle station in the heart of Paris’s cinema district. There, during the cinema festival this summer, special lighting effects dot the platforms and films are projected onto the large advertising boards.
More than anything the metro is efficient. “When I worked on line 4”, says a retired driver, “we had exactly 30 minutes and 15 seconds to complete the journey. If it took any longer, they cut our pay.” But there are problems. Many Metro stations have too many stairs, and changing lines at big interchanges(交换) can be tiresome.
Moscow
Passengers carried per day: 9m
Cost of ticket: 12p
Length: 164 miles Lines: 11 Stations: 162
The first underground passage for the Moscow Metropolitan started in 1932. Three years later the trains started running. They haven’t stopped since— every 90 seconds or two minutes during rush hour, every five minutes the rest of the time, from 6 a.m. till 1 a. m. There may be a crowd of people but there is seldom a wait.
The trains take you through spacious and spotless stations. For tourists it’s a major sightseeing attraction: from Russian Art Deco to neo-classical, the Metro stations are not to be missed.
Tokyo
Passengers carried per day: 7m
Cost of ticket: 90p ~ £1.68
Length: 177 miles Lines: 12 Stations: 209
Trains do not just arrive on time in Tokyo. They stop right on the platform mark so that passengers can line up knowing exactly where the doors will open. Train driving is a respectful job for life, for which the applicants must pass a strict screening of health checks, interviews and written exams before they can put on the enviable uniform, cap and white gloves.
However, overcrowding means it is far from perfect. At rush hours, some stations employ part-time platform staff to push in passengers. Carriages can be filled to 184% of capacity(容量). The main reason for such conditions is that the Tokyo subway station system has only 15 miles of track for every 1 million people, compared to 36 on the London Underground. New lines are under construction, but at a cost of £500,000 per meter of rail. Progress has been slow.
Mexico City
Passengers carried per day: 4.2m
Cost of ticket: 11p flat fare
Length: 99 miles Lines: 11 Stations: 175
Fast, relatively safe, and very cheap, Mexico City’s underground is an ideal place of order and efficiency compared to the disorders above. The Mexican capital’s underground system is the biggest in the continent and one of the most subsidized (获得补助的) networks in the world.
The first trains leave the station at 5 a.m. and the last after midnight as the crowd move from the outskirts of the 20 million-strong megacity (大城市). Mexico City’s Metro also attracts a sizeable group of passengers who are unwilling to spend hours in traffic jams. There is a master plan to build new lines and extend existing one, but financial constraints (约束) complicated by the fact that the system runs through different jurisdicitons (管辖权) mean progress is slow.
【1】Metro rail drivers in Paris must____.
A. keep to the train schedule strictly
B. complete the journey gracefully
C. stop right on the platform mark
D. understand the special lighting
【2】In which two cities can travelling by underground be a sightseeing experience?
A. Moscow and Tokyo B. Paris and Moscow
C. Paris and Mexico City D. Tokyo and Mexico City
【3】Which word may best describe the Tokyo underground trains?
A. Cheap B. Efficient C. Crowded D. Slow
【4】Why is the expansion of the underground system in Mexico City slow?
A. The plan to extend existing lines is impractical.
B. The government offers little financial support.
C. People are unwilling to help build new lines.
D. The lines involve several authorities.
22、For the majority of people, watching movies is their favorite pastime. Even for the deaf, subtitles make it possible for them to enjoy movies. But what about deaf children who can’t read yet, or whose reading isn’t fast enough to keep up with subtitles?
Mariella Satow, 17, a senior student, ran into these questions and spent over a year developing SignUp to solve them. SignUp, launched in August, is a free-of-charge Google Chrome Extension that provides American Sign Language (ASL) captioning over videos on streaming service Disney Plus. It puts a small box with a sign language interpreter in the corner of the screen while the movie plays.
Satow has been stuck in New York, US, since March 2020 because of COVID-19 travel restrictions. During the COVID-19 lockdown, Satow decided to learn a new language, specifically ASL. “Normally, I learn languages by watching television shows with captions, but I found nothing similar for ASL,” Satow said in her profile on SignUp’s website.
Realizing that some deaf children would come across the problem, Satow took action. Using her $ 3, 000, she made from part-time job during the pandemic, Satow employed an India-based company Softpulse Infotech to help her devise a coding system that could overlay ASL interpretation on streaming platforms. As of Nov 12, the extension has provided on-screen ASL interpretation for nine movies such as Moana. Satow has received positive reactions from parents and teachers.
“We watched Moana. My 6-year-old daughter’s smile face was priceless. She loved it. It was the first time she’s had full access to a movie. Thank you!” a user commented below on SigmUp’s Twitter account. Satow also revealed that some teachers would use the extension in their classrooms and arrange movie nights for their students.
“My hope is we’ll have a lot more movies interpreted,” she said. “I’m hoping to expand to a more adult audience and to other countries to make it as big as possible.” “We are very proud of her drive, vision and most importantly her commitment to service,” said Gareth, head of Rugby School.

24、Diet containing lots of salt can contribute to increased levels of stress, a new study shows. Scientists found in studies of mice that a high-salt diet increased the levels of a stress hormone by 75 per cent. Experts hope the findings will encourage a review of public health policy around salt consumption, aiming at manufacturers reducing the amount of salt in processed food.
The recommended salt intake for adults is less than six grams a day but most people regularly eat about nine grams. This can contribute to higher blood pressure, which increases the risks of heart attacks, strokes and dementia.
While effects on the heart and circulatory(循环) system have been ascertained, little was known about the impact of a high-salt diet on a person’s behaviour. To study this, experts from the University of Edinburgh used mice, who ordinarily have a low-salt diet, and gave them high-salt food to reflect the typical intake of humans.
They found that not only did resting stress hormone levels increase, but the mice’s hormone response to environmental stress was double that of mice that had a normal diet. Salt intake increased the activity of genes that produce the proteins in the brain which control how the body responds to stress.
Experts say further studies are already underway to understand if a high-salt intake leads to other behavioural changes such as anxiety and aggression. Matthew Bailey, professor of Renal Physiology at the University of Edinburgh’s Centre for Cardiovascular Science, said: “We are what we eat and understanding how high-salt food changes our mental health is an important step to improving wellbeing. We know that eating too much salt damages our heart, blood vessels(血管) and kidneys. This study now tells us that high salt in our food also changes the way our brain handles stress.”
【1】What are the findings expected to bring about eventually?
A.Manufacturers adding less salt to processed food.
B.People debating the policy on public health.
C.Decreased levels of stress hormones.
D.Reduced amount of processed food.
【2】What does the underlined word “ascertained” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Ignored.
B.Restored.
C.Reduced.
D.Confirmed.

A.What policy on salt should be.
B.How a high-salt intake affects blood pressure.
C.How much salt intake is appropriate.
D.Whether a high-salt intake causes anxiety.
【4】What may be a suitable little for the text?
A.Most people regularly take in too much salt.
B.Mental health is important to improving well being.
C.Diet containing much salt increases levels of stress.
D.Less than six grams of salt a day is recommended.
