二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Gutiérrez’s life would never be the same again after finding a copy of Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy in the garbage 20 years ago. It happened while he was driving his garbage truck through wealthier neighbourhoods at night and seeing abandoned books. It aroused his desire to start rescuing books from the garbage. He used to take home between 50 and 60 books every morning. Eventually, he turned his book collection into a community library for children from low-income families.

Colombia’s capital city of Bogota has 19 public libraries. However, these libraries tend to be far away from where rural and poorer communities live. The option of buying new books is non-existent for families struggling to make ends meet. Gutiérrez’s community library is a true representation of how one man’s garbage can be another’s treasure.

Gutiérrez grew up poor, and his family could not afford to educate him beyond primary school. Nevertheless, his mother was a passionate reader and read stories to him every night. Her love for books left a deep impression on Gutiérrez.

Today, his makeshift community library, called “The Strength of Words”, occupies most of his home in southern Bogota, and is piled from floor to ceiling with fiction and non-fiction titles. Everything from school textbooks to storybooks can be found in his collection of more than 20.000 books! As word began to spread about his amazing project, people began sending him thousands more books to grow his library.

Despite having done so much for his community, Gutiérrez is not yet content to call it a day. He continues to search through garbage cans for reading materials. Today, the Gutiérrez family does not merely want to start libraries in neighbourhoods. They want to create spaces for school children to spend their time reading.

Gutiérrez’s journey to give back to his local community is an amazing example of how every one of us can improve the lives of those around us. How might we take a leaf out of Gutiérrez’s books and impact the less fortunate around us?

【1】What inspired Gutiérrez to rescue unwanted books?

    A.The abandoned Anna Karenina.

    B.Leo Tolstoy’s life.

    C.Children’s living conditions.

    D.A community-library.

【2】Why did Gutiérrez start “The Strength of Words”?

    A.To create a harmonious neighborhood.

B.To give his mother sufficient books.

    C.To facilitate children’s reading.

    D.To improve the community life.

    【3】What can best describe Gutiérrez?

    A.Devoted and talented.

    B.Intelligent and generous.

    C.Passionate and well-educated.

    D.Creative and caring.

【4】What would be the best title for the text?

    A.Desire for reading

    B.From garbage to treasure

    C.Gutiérrez’s kindness

    D.An amazing model of education

  • 22、   Five years ago, Yellow-Purple tore a flexor tendon(屈肌腱), making it difficult to use her left leg. The little penguin was having a hard time walking and swimming.

Yellow-Purple lives with a large group of African penguins at Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut. African penguins are an endangered species. They are beautiful, black and white birds that are about two feet tall when fully grown, and they are very popular with the Aquarium’s visitors.

The staff at the Aquarium made a little support boot for Yellow-Purple from plastic. This supported her left ankle and made it much easier for her to do all the things that penguins like to do. Yellow-Purple was getting along fine with her boot, but then Dr. Jen Flower, Chief Clinical Veterinarian at Mystic Aquarium, heard about 3 D printing technology. She decided to use it to help better the boot.

Luckily, Mystic Aquarium’s Vice President of Education &Conservation, Kelly Marls, knew that Mystic Middle School had recently acquired a 3D Systems printer. Kelly reached out to the school and arranged a meeting. Sue Prince, Library Media Specialist at Mystic Middle School, and seven middle school students visited Yellow-Purple to learn what was needed, and then contacted the supplier of their 3 D printer, ACT Group.

With ACT Group’s help, the students learned how to scan Yellow-Purple’s existing foot cast, then use that data to create a more efficient boot with sculpting software. The final boot design was printed on a 3D printer using multiple materials, allowing the boot to be flexible enough for comfortable movement, yet hard enough to support the injured tendon.

The students were thrilled when they saw Yellow-Purple walking almost back to normal. It was a great way to put science into practice. Celebrities like Ashton Kutcher shared Yellow-Purple’s story on Facebook, inspiring more than 1.5 million combined views.

1What can we learn about African penguins?

A.They are very large in number. B.They are dangerous species.

C.They are beautiful when young. D.They are attractive to visitors.

2Who came up with the idea of an updated support boot?

A.The ACT Group. B.Dr. Jen Flower.

    C.Kelly Matis. D.Sue Prince

3What preparation work was done before the students got the ACT Group’s help?

A.They reached school on time. B.They held a meeting to discuss the problem.

C.They paid a visit to Yellow-Purple. D.They contacted the ACT Group for supplies.

4What is the best title for this text?

A.The development of 3D printing B.A penguin benefiting from high-tech

C.An effort to put science into practice D.A software that can design

  • 23、   The letter arrives from a school that your son told you is his dream school. You dare not open itinsteadyou hand it to him when he arrives home from school. You watch as his eyes light up and you know this is the beginning of something. You are just not sure what. Your son insists that the coach must really want him since he took the time to write him a letter. Is this in fact trueDid he write other kids and if so how manyHow would you know

The simple fact of the matter is that you can read very little into that first letter. Coaches cast a wide net in the first few stages of the recruiting(录取)cycle. That letter may in factbe the first and last time your son ever hears from that particular coach. Think about itif he has not seen your sons transcripts or his standardized test scoresif you have not visited the schoolif he has no knowledge of your financial needscan it be anything significant

So how do you treat these letters or emailsIs there some format you can applySay tor instancethree letters mean real interest…or three letters and a call means a greater degree of interest

My experience in deal with cases of various applications is that answers will not come automatically. Call the coach and find out how real the interest in fact is. "Is my son a top recruit in your mind" "How many players at his position will you be recruiting this year?" By asking these simple and direct questionsyou as a parentwill have established a dialogue and hopefully figured out how much interestif any really exists. Howeverhere comes the challenge. Applicants and parents are vague with coaches about their intention and level of interest all the time. In factthe coach's situation is no less confusing than yours. He is fighting a similar battle on multiple choices. There is little clarity on either end.

Enjoy that first letter. Let's hope it is one of many and let's hope you apply a bit of realism with a bit of wishful thinking about how happy your son should be when this is all over.

1How did the parent feel about the letter that his son got from his dreamed school ______

    A.expectant B.hesitant

    C.doubtful D.hopeful

2According to the passageby calling the coachparents can______ .

A.determine the level of interest from coach

B.build up a communication with the coach

C.identify the real intention of the coach

D.understand more about the situation of the coach

3The author of the passage is most likely to be ______ .

A.a consultant to help students with their application

    B.a parent with similar experiences

C.a school authority that supervises the application

D.a coach in charge of the application

4The purpose of the passage is to ______ .

A.remind parents of the importance of the first letter from coaches

B.tell parents how to react to the first letter from coaches

C.advise parents to ignore the first letter from coaches

D.warn parents to be realistic towards the first letter from coaches

  • 24、   Esports (electronic sports) are organized competitions where players — often referred to as “athletes” — face off against each other in video games. They are not just games in a sense. Actually, they are a sport that can improve the players’ thinking ability, hand-eye coordination, willpower and team spirit.

The esports industry has experienced significant growth in recent years around the world, though it’s still in the nascent stage, which means it has huge growth potential going forward.

While the assumption is that esports are only a recent phenomenon, in reality the first esports-like event was held back in 1972, when some Stanford University students competed against one another in the game Spacewar. The prize? A year-long subscription to Rolling Stone magazine.

The ’80s saw the first true videogame tournament, with over 10,000 players gathering for the Space Invaders Championship. However, most of the period saw that players focused on beating each other’s highest scores rather than competing in organized tournaments.

As gaming became more popular, the ’90s became the first decade when esports (a term which wasn’t yet coined) began to really take off, with companies such as Nintendo and Sega holding professional gaming tournaments. This is also when we began to see money becoming a factor in professional gaming. But it is the 1997 Red Annihilation Quake tournament that is considered the world’s first real esports event. Only a few weeks later, the Cyberathlete Professional League was formed — an organization which is considered a pioneer of esports.

Due to the normalization of gaming and the Internet (along with technological advances), the real surge ( 激增 ) of esports came in the recent decade. It was then that we began seeing what we now know to be modern-day esports. As streaming platforms such as YouTube took off, people began to show interest in not only playing videogames but watching them too. Popular tournaments now sell out stadiums and professional players can earn millions from prize money, advertising and salaries.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

That year I was ten years old and my father was away, leaving my mother and me behind. My mother was a surgeon and worked at the local clinic a few blocks from where we lived. It was a noisy and cold winter, when 1 learned a valuable 1esson.

The bell rang and thoughts of Christmas were the only thing on my mind. I raced home from school. The apartment was empty when I arrived and a note was attached to the refrigerator. My mother was working a double shin and left me instructions for the day. I became angry and tore the note in several pieces. We had planned on making Christmas biscuits together, but my mother spoiled it by working.

I suddenly realized my mother must have hidden the Christmas presents somewhere in her bedroom. I hunted through mother’s closet, finding the gifts for Christmas wrapped but one, a model plane. At the thought of my loneliness on such a night I couldn’t help but throw it onto the floor, its wings broken. I stood frozen with my eyes and mouth wide open, staring down at the plane...

Then my mother came through the door and saw the plane.

    “Danny?”

    “Yeah, Mom?”

“I came home to take the toy plane to one of my patients, but...” she said, her eyes moving from the floor to me. I stood sill, unable to come up with a good explanation for the toy’s ruin. The silence was terrible. I did not hear my mother scold me. She just leaned against the wall with her tired body. A feeling of guilt floating into my mind, I gathered my courage to tell her the horrible truth. She hugged me and asked me to put my coat on and follow her.
