21、 Sharks are amazing creatures. They are known as the deadliest hunters in the sea. Fortunately most are not, but there are some kinds of sharks that can be extremely dangerous. Look at these short descriptions of four kinds of sharks.
The Great White Shark
Great Whites are one of the most frightening creatures in the sea. They live in tropical and subtropical waters, and they can grow up to 9 meters long. Most Great Whites are actually grey, blue or brown with a white belly, and their powerful teeth are triangles with edges like saws.
The Whale Shark
Whale Sharks are the largest kind of shark in the world-up to 11 meters in length. They live in tropical waters all around the world, but they are not dangerous. Whale Sharks are brown or grey with white or yellow stripes. They often travel near the surface of the sea.
The Mako Shark
Mako Sharks are fierce predators. They come from the same family of sharks as the Great White and they are especially fast-they can swim at speeds of up to 65 kilometers per hour. They are large bluish sharks found in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans. Mako Sharks can grow up to 3 meters long.
The Great Hammerhead Shark
The Great Hammerheads' most striking feature is its wide thick head which looks like a hammer. The average size of a Great Hammerhead is approximately 3.5 meters, but can grow up to 6 meters long. These sharks average over 500 pounds but can weigh as much as 1,000 pounds. Like most sharks the females are larger than the males. They have several rows of teeth that have 24 to 37 teeth per row. The Great Hammerhead has a very keen sense of smell, which helps find its prey.

22、Eradajere Oleita thinks she may have a partial solution for two of the country’s persistent problems: garbage and poverty. It’s called the Chip Bag Project. The 26-year-old student and environmentalist from Detroit is asking a favor of local snack lovers: Rather than throw your empty chip bags into the trash, donate them so she can turn them into sleeping bags for the homeless.
Chip eaters drop off their empty bags from Doritos, Lay’s, and other favorites at two locations in Detroit: a print shop and a clothing store, where Oleita and her volunteer helpers collect them. After they clean the chip bags in soapy hot water, they slice them open, lay them flat, and iron them together. They use liners (活衬里) from old coats to line the insides.
It takes about four hours to sew a sleeping bag, and each takes around 150 to 300 chip bags, depending on whether they’re single-serve or family size. The result is a sleeping bag that is “waterproof, lightweight, and portable,” Oleita told the Detroit News.
Since its start in 2020, the Chip Bag Project has collected more than 800,000 chip bags and it created 110 sleeping bags last December.
Sure, it would be simpler to raise the money to buy new sleeping bags. But that’s only half the goal for Oleita — whose family moved to the United States from Nigeria a decade ago with the hope of attaining a better life — and her fellow volunteers. “We are devoted to making an impact not only socially, but environmentally,” she says.
And, of course, there’s the symbolism of saving bags that would otherwise land in the trash and using them to help the homeless. It’s a powerful reminder that environmental injustice and poverty are often closely related. As Oleita told hourdetroit.com: “I think it’s time to show connections between all of these issues.”
【1】What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The final goal of Chip Bag Project.
B.The basic rules of Chip Bag Project.
C.The main work of Chip Bag Project.
D.The significance of Chip Bag Project.
【2】What do we know about the sleeping bag made by Chip Bag Project?
A.Its size is adjustable.
B.It is easy to carry around.
C.It has the function of heating.

【3】Which of the following statements does Oleita probably agree with?
A.Making sleeping bags is easier than buying new ones.
B.Poverty and environmental problems go hand in hand.
C.Making sleeping bags is the best way to help the homeless.
D.Environmental problems have little impact on the homeless.
【4】Which of the following best describes Oleita?
A.Caring and creative.
B.Brave and optimistic.
C.Honest and determined.
D.Talented and easy-going.
23、The next time your brain refuses to recall a simple fact or name, be thankful. That could be a sign that your brain is getting rid of unnecessary information so that it can operate more efficiently, and help you make better decisions.
The researchers say there are numerous neurobiological(神经生物学的)studies conducted on how the brain stores information, a process called persistence (暂留). However, scientists also assumed that our occasional inability to recall facts was due to a are an the brain. In 2013, scientists discovered that as new neurons combine with the hippocampus(海马区)----a region of the brain that plays a significant role in learning and remembering---they overwrite old memories, making them harder to access. There is also evidence that the brain weakens or removes connections between neurons, in which memories are encoded.
The scientists have a theory on why the brain spends so much energy erasing memories. They say what the brain decides to forget is determined by our daily life. An example is that our brains remember phone numbers according to the need. Instead of storing this irrelevant information that our phones can store for us, our brains are freed up to store the memories that actually do matter for us. They also believe that memorizing too much detail could prevent us from making good decisions.
So the next time you are unable to recall a seemingly important fact, don’t be hard on yourself. Just throw it to your brain’s “rubbish can” to make room for information that can contribute to making you smarter! Remember, even Albert Einstein was absent-minded!
【1】What can we know from the first two paragraphs?
A. Persistence is not a process to store information
B. Once information is stored in the brain, it will last forever
C. Learning and memorizing take place in the hippocampus
D. New neurons will strengthen old memories
【2】The brain has to erase memories to __________.
A. recall important information
B. store more important information
C. store detail
D. remember phone numbers
【3】If some unimportant information is stored, it will be _________.
A. combined with the hippocampus
B. processed and memorized permanently
C. stored and decoded immediately
D. removed and forgotten soon
【4】What is the best title of the passage?
A. Scientists encourage us to forget things
B. The way our brains memorize and encode
C. Forgetting things may make you smarter
D. Why was Albert Einstein absent-minded?
24、 Scientists have designed “transparent wood” that could replace conventional glass in windows. The innovation was developed using wood from the balsa tree, which is native to South and Central America, and claims to be five times more thermally efficient than glass.
The transparent wood was created by teams at the University of Maryland and University of Colorado, which set out to find a greener alternative to conventional glass – a production that creates 25,000 tons in emissions each year. Along with contributing to greenhouse gases, glass contributes to a loss of energy.
“Residential building windows in particular account for 10–25% of the heat loss due to their poor thermal management capability,” the team wrote in the study.
“Exploring energy efficient window materials is thus highly desirable to address heating costs, energy shortages, and the global impact of climate change associated with increased carbon emissions.”
The team notes that the bonding between PVA and cellulose(纤维素)in the wood, creates a tightly packed structure that allows for more thermal protection and makes it more durable and lighter than glass.
The team treated balsa wood in a bath that bleaches(漂白)it of nearly all visibility and then injected it with a chemical substance called polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) - creating a product that is virtually transparent. Unlike traditional glass, the transparent wood can withstand much stronger impacts and will bend or crack when damaged, instead of shattering(粉碎).
“Switching to transparent wood could prove to be cost efficient as well,” researchers shared in a statement. “It is made from a sustainable, renewable resource with low carbon emissions. It can be produced with existing industrial processing equipment, making its manufacturing an easy prospect.”
【1】What does the underlined word “thermally” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Associated with cost.
B.Connected with heat.

A.To show the disadvantage of conventional glass.
B.To show the efficiency of thermal management.
C.To explain the global impact of climate change.
D.To explain the importance of building designing.
【3】What helps the transparent wood in thermal protection?
A.Its tightly packed structure.
B.Its sustainable, renewable resource.
C.Its easy manufacturing prospect.
D.Its industrial processing equipment.
【4】What do we know about the “transparent wood”?
A.It will shatter when damaged.
B.It has replaced traditional glass.
C.It is more durable than glass.
