二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、One late winter day in Manchester, UK, as I step inside the University of Salford’s latest research building, the cold 3°C air bites immediately. In fact, it’s a giant climate- controlled room, designed to test how homes built today will cope with the wilder weather climate change could bring.

Inside the £16-million room, researchers can create any weather they want with the touch of a button, from —20°C cold to 40°C heatwaves, alongside strong winds, snow and ice. KAnywhere people live, we can recreate those conditions,,, says Fitton, who leads the Energy House 2.0 project for the university.

Inside the building are two new-build homes, complete with brickwork and pot plants. Both are equipped with cutting-edge green technology) like electric vehicle charging points, and will act as test beds to build greener homes in the UK. In 2025, the Future Homes Standard(FHS) will require all new homes to be built without gas central heating and with other green measures. Homes built to the FHS must deliver a 75% to 80% reduction in carbon emissions compared with homes built today.

That is why Bellway, partnering with the project, has built the rooms from its Coppersmith range of homes inside the Energy House 2.0. Yet clearly this is no ordinary new-build. For one thing, packed inside are three different heating systems: two air source heat pumps? plus panel heaters dotted around the walls and ceilings. There’s also a solar power input, a battery and a smart hot water tank that heats water using solar generation.

Over the coming months, Bellway will test different combinations of these technologies to find the most cost-effective way of meeting the FHS regulations.

Financially, things are promising: Based on energy-performance calculations, Bellway says its Future Home could have energy bills of just £11 a year.

Energy House 2.0 will let researchers see how houses perform in the UK’s future climate. “We can cycle through the climate change predictions 50 years into the future and see if we have any problems says Fitton.”

【1】What’s the aim of building the £16-million room?

A.To predict the extreme weather humans will face.

B.To test how long a house stands in extreme weather.

C.To find a way for homes to deal with climate change.

D.To explore the most habitable homes for humans.

【2】Why does Bellway cooperate with the project?

A.To design green houses to meet the standards of FHS.

B.To explore the household use of advanced technology.

C.To sponsor the Energy House 2.0 for market profit.

D.To popularize its Coppersmith range of future homes.

【3】Where will Energy House 2.0 research go?

A.It’ll explore the use of cutting-edge technology.

B.It’ll find how houses tackle future climate changes.

C.It’ll make future houses have zero carbon emission.

D.It5ll spread Coppersmith range all over the country.

【4】What is a suitable title for the text?

A.Energy-Saving House Designs Put to the Test

B.The Expensive Room Holding Future Hopes

C.The Leading Place of the UK in Home Designs

D.Research into Homes for Future Climate Change

  • 23、David Frank started working for tips when he was 11 years old, delighting restaurant diners in New York with his magic tricks. As a teenager he would make an average of $60-70 in an evening—not bad, but he wanted more. So he started reading research on tipping, and found a study showing that servers who left a sweet at the end of the meal could up their pay. He tried handing customers a playing card at the end of his act, which he hoped would persuade them to part with more cash. It worked.

Mr. Frank's findings confirmed the notion of the tip as a sort of reward for outstanding service. For a start, economists are puzzled by the fact that so many people give tips, voluntarily handing out cash for a routine service, when it is assumed that customers generally want to pay as little as possible for what they buy. But fuzzier factors also seem to matter, like the feelings of gratitude that Mr. Frank inspired. A Survey in 2010 by Ofer Azar of Israel's Ben-Gurion University of the Negev found that 85% of American tippers claimed to be following a social pattern, while 60% said they tipped to avoid guilt.

During the pandemic these fuzzy factors appear to have strengthened. Mr. Lynn observed that people have been tipping more generously even while ordering take-away food.

The presence of a pandemic or of a magician performing at one's table are just two of many factors that may affect the size of a tip. A tipper may simply be touched by the server. If a waiter squats down beside you at the table as he or she takes your order, that often brings a higher tip. Good weather may encourage generosity too. Race can be an uglier factor. A study of tips for cab drivers found that black drivers were tipped on average at a rate of 13%, while white drivers got 20%.

【1】Why did David Frank hand customers a card?

    A.To delight the customers.

    B.To provide the best service.

    C.To satisfy their needs.

    D.To increase his income.

【2】What do we know about the tipping fact?

A.Customers want to pay as few tips as possible.

B.Most tippers in America tip because others tip.

C.Tipping is the best way to show gratitude.

D.Tipping is usually included in the bill.

【3】Why does the author mention "take-away food"?

A.To indicate take- away food is more popular during pandemic.

B.To persuade readers to order take-away food in pandemic.

C.To emphasize that people tend to give more tips in pandemic.

D.To explain there's no need to tip in terms of take-away food.

【4】What can we infer from last paragraph?

    A.The pandemic makes tips unaffordable.

B.The customers' mood influences their tipping.

C.Tipping has nothing to do with weather.

D.There are more white drivers than black ones.

  • 24、   Scientists often complain that people are not rational (理性的) in their opposition to technologies such as nuclear power and genetically modified (GM) crops. From a statistical perspective, these are very safe, and so peopled fear can be explained only by emotion, strengthened by ignorance. Electricity from nuclear power has led to far fewer direct deaths than has coalfired power, yet many people are afraid of it, and hardly anyone is afraid of coal plants. Similar arguments can be made about GM crops, which studies have shown are generally safe for most people to eat.

Scientific illiteracy (无知) may be part of the problem. Most of us are afraid of things we don’t understand, and studies have shown that scientists tend to be more accepting of potentially risky technologies than laypeople. This suggests that when people know a lot about such technologies, they are usually reassured.

But there’s more to the issue than meets the eye. It is true that many of us fear the unknown, but it is also true that we don’t care enough about routine risks. Part of the explanation is complacency: we tend not to fear the familiar, and thus familiarity can lead us to underestimate risk. The investigation into the Deepwater Horizon blowout and oil spill (原油泄漏) in 2010 showed that complacency—among executives, among engineers and among government officials-was a major cause of that disaster. So the fact that experts are unworried about a threat is not necessarily reassuring.

Scientists also make a mistake when they assume that public concerns are wholly or even mostly about safety. Some people object to GM crops because these crops facilitate the increased use of chemicals. Others have a problem with the social impacts that switching to GM organisms can have on traditional farming communities or with the political implications of leaving a large share of the food supply in the hands of a few corporations.

Geoengineering (地球工程学) to lessen the impacts of climate change is another example. Laypeople as well as scientists are more concerned about oversight (监管) than safety. Who will decide whether this is a good way to deal with climate change? If we undertake the project of setting the global temperature by controlling how much sunlight reaches Earth’s surface, who will be included in that “we” and by what process will the “right” global temperature be chosen?

Can we say which group’s view is closer to an accurate assessment?

1The underlined word “complacency” in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.

    A.overconfidence B.prediction

    C.underestimation D.carelessness

2The example of geoengineering is used to argue that ________.

A.safety is not the whole concern of the public

B.geoengineering is highly recognized by scientists

C.the public are unnecessarily troubled by climate change

D.lessening the impacts of climate change is a great challenge

3What can we learn from the passage?

A.Scientific illiteracy is a major cause of disasters.

B.The safety of technologies can be accurately assessed.

C.Scientists misjudge people’s opposition to technologies.

D.People are unworried about risks with proper oversight.

4Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

    A.Ignorance or Safety

    B.Who Is Rational About Risk

    C.Why Can’t People Trust Technology

D.Should Scientists Have a Say in Risk
