二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、First, you ought to know that I’m “only” fourteen. My mother points this out often. I can make my own decisions when I’m old enough to vote, she says. Second, I should tell you that she’s right I’m not always responsible. I sometimes take the prize for grade-A dork(呆子). Take last weekend for instance. I was staying at Dad’s, and I decided it was time I learned to drive. It was Sunday morning, 7 A.M., and I hadn’t slept well. I’d been up thinking about an argument, which I’ll tell you about in a minute. Well, nobody was up yet in the neighborhood, so I thought it couldn’t hurt to back the car out of the garage and drive around the block. But Dad has a clutch(离合器)car. The “R” on the shift handle was up on the left side, right next to first gear(档位). I guess you can guess the rest.

Dad’s always been understanding. He didn’t say, “Okay, little Miss Know-It-All, you can just spend the rest of the year paying this off,” which is what Mom would have said. Instead, Dad worried about what might have happened to me. And that made me feel more guilty than anything. I think he’d be a better number-one caregiver, but I can’t say things like that to Mom. To her, I have to say, “But Mom, Dad’s place is closer to school. I could ride my bike,” to which she replies, “Amy Lynn, you don’t own a bike. Remember? You left it in the yard, and it was stolen. And you haven’t got the patience to earn the money to replace it.”

【1】The writer feels guilty because she ________.

    A. made her dad worry

    B. ruined the car

    C. broke the law

    D. didn’t tell her mom about the car incident

2The main conflict between the writer and her mother is about whether she ________.

    A. can make her own decisions

    B. should live with her mom or her dad

    C. should be allowed to drive

    D. should pay for things she loses or breaks

3The writer’s mother thinks the writer is ________.

    A. too attached to her dad

    B. too emotional

    C. too shy

    D. irresponsible

4In the first sentence, the writer used “only” to suggest that she ________.

    A. doesn’t want to grow old

    B. thinks fourteen is old enough for some things

    C. wishes she were older

    D. thinks fourteen is an embarrassing age

  • 22、When you’re behind the wheel, distractions (分心) cost lives. Nevertheless, drivers take selfies, and respond to text messages. 【1】

Smartphones are often at the root of these tragedies. As Big Tech sets its sights on modern vehicles, it’s appropriate to ask if it’s time to limit attention-stealing technology that distracts the driver.

Big Tech wants to take on the automotive industry. And it is good at grabbing both attention and information from users. At first, the goal of these technology companies was to give away services at no cost, simply to attract a customer base. 【2】 Their increasing thirst for valuable user information has led them to the automotive industry, where a whole new world of data awaits. Location data, frequent destinations, passenger preferences — such data is found in family cars. 【3】

Mobile tech is walled off from vehicle operating systems by software that keeps infotainment (information and entertainment) features away from the mission-critical driving electronics. If auto makers give up their core operating system to tech powerhouses, they will essentially become hardware suppliers to Silicon Valley.

【4】 Their responsibility is to keep attention on the road, providing vehicle information and a small amount of entertainment options while getting passengers from place to place as safely as possible. Smartphone makers and digital-media providers don’t have this priority. They want eyes on their products, not on the road.

With electric vehicles transforming the auto industry, and artificial intelligence more common than ever, we’re at a dangerous moment. 【5】 Because their hardware is wrapped around families, they have a duty to keep them safe. The only way they can do that is to maintain control of the driver’s seat.

The quality, safety and security will make or break trust in auto makers. Without it, cars will be simply one more intrusive and risky mobile device.

A.Car companies have priorities opposed to those of Big Tech.

B.Now they exist to sell information about their users to advertisers.

C.They enjoy the convenience and fun brought by modern technology.

D.Car makers are, and should be, the most trusted technology companies in the world.

E.Currently video-streaming services are starting to be built into car operating systems.

F.And operating systems and autonomous-driving software are all gateways for this information.

G.Statistics show that an average of eight people a day die in accidents caused by distracted driving.

  • 23、There are some basic ways that we encounter potential new friends, the first of which is closeness. When we cross paths regularly, live in the same neighborhood, or share a workstation in the office with someone, it makes sense that acquaintanceship may deepen into friendship as a result of the consistent exposure that occurs through the use of shared space. While there is an old saying, familiarity generates disrespect, the opposite is also true, we tend to like someone more as we spend increasing amounts of time with them.

Shared life stage is the second way that we frequently find new friends. We take satisfaction and pleasure when spending time with people who are experiencing the same challenges or rewards that we are experiencing. When we move from high school to college or college to our first job, we tend to seek out the company of others who are experiencing the same transformation we are.

Shared interests are also a reliable path to friendship making. When we get into a new fitness program or start making our own beer, we are going to be bumping into new people who share these interests whether it’s through chatting in the juice bar or trying to decide what to buy at the craft beer making supply shop.

We know that there are three paths that lead to new friendship pools where we are likely to build our social networks, but do we ever know right from the start that we’ve met a friend? Science suggests it is absolutely possible. While we may all have felt the same excitement of instant connection with someone, the “someone” who generates that feeling of warmth in us is going to tell us a lot about who we are as individuals and what we think we need in a friend or partner.

While we may run across potential friends through some ways, there remains a bit of mystery as to why we “click” with some potential friends and not with others.

【1】What’s the common understanding of closeness?

A.It leads to more shared space.

    B.It creates a mental distance.

    C.It helps establish relationships.

    D.It makes people more attractive.

【2】As a fresh staff in a company, you are more likely to be a friend of ________.

A.someone who lives in your community

B.someone who has richer work experience

C.someone who gets the job together with you

D.someone who has a wider range of interests

【3】What can we learn from the fourth paragraph?

A.A friend is easier lost than found.

    B.True friendship is never peaceful.

C.Friendship is always the aid of virtue.

D.Friends hold a mirror up to each other.

【4】What can be concluded from the article?

A.We are unclear why we have a preference for someone.

B.It’s easy for people to be friends right from the first meeting.

C.Friendships can’t develop between those with diverse tastes.

D.People tend to possess the same interests after becoming friends.
